in the old days, people showed up in openings dressed in epic atires, their capes fluttered in the winds and they bore smiles that could shatter the heavens. There is better and more original character development (assuming we leave out the boy in Gundam by happenstance issue). The fictional history and political intrigue of UC is vastly more rich and textured, because it was the original series and ended up being fleshed out the most while also focusing on the military aspects of MS deployment in the UC Gundam OVAs.

@mobius1aic Where as newer Gundams, like alot of newer anime, focus way too much on teenager-ish adolescent melodrama, UC tends to really focus on characters who are driven by realistic ideals, be it politics, philosophy, economics, etc.

As per 08th Team being gritty or not, it in a way certainly is as it depicted MS combat in the most realistic manner in any Gundam show ever made. The story was quite good, you feel a genuine connection to the main characters, and you root for them.

I can't really say which opening is my favourite, but I did like G gundam opening 2, gundam ZZ opening 2, victory gundam opening 2, both gundam X openings, both gundam Wing openings , and a handful of seed/destiny openings. The 00 openings were good too, but I didn't find them as good as some others.

@below61 Yes the intensity of Gundam X first opening is very hard to match. It brought a sense of supremacy. The melody had a sense of finality to it.. also the shape of the Gundam is like an X so though it isn't the last letter of the alphabet.. the song made it feel that way. Gundam Wing opening is spectacular, it captures the anticipation of turning the ignition of a very powerful engine and going for a ride and the crescendo depicts sheer freedom of motion and Alpine bliss

I actually like every other 00 opening better than "Ash like snow." For some reason, "Flying in the sky" from G Gundam really stands out to me, that was the first series I watched, And i really like the melody when it shows his cryogenically frozen father. "Realize" from Seed was really good to, so was "Meteor" (I think that was the name ). Good picks, I really like "Rhythm Emotion" and "Silent Voice" ( for the same part that you mention ). Gundam openings always have the best music.

I'd figure it had to do with the art style. Most of the other gundam series had unique characters often with their own individual looks and styles everything from clothes to mannerisms. The Universal century gundam series especially had a more semi realistic and gritty feel to them which almost gave them the appearance of being closer to a western war film then your run of the mill anime.
