  • This ain't a 917, that 917 had a naturally aspirated straight-12, sounded quite a bit better than the 956.

  • If you find the full vid clip (or the whole "In car 956" video), you'll find that during the race in 1983 when this was filmed the Rothmans 956s topped out at nowhere near 200 to 220. It was in fact 246!!!

  • Jesus christ that thing is really moving down the Mulsanne, going to guess around 220 there?

  • Anyone have any idea how fast he's going??? I'm guessing 200 to 220 miles an hour, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

  • Brutal machine.

I once heard that racing drivers were affraid of this car.

Either to be driving it, or seeing it in their rearview mirror.

  • @Maastricht1 Its true.. Around Vasek Polak some mechanics called it the widow maker.I grew up in that dealership in Hermosa Bch.

  • This is a Rothmans Porche 956 not the faster 917 as the video implies.

  • fuck....hargh........

  • mulsanne without chicanes... people still had balls those days, and cars weren't filled with electronic gizmos... that's true driving

  • That old piece of gold is just so F.. something fast

  • DAMN this car is extremely fast

  • MAIS MAIS MAIS!!!!

  • This was still the real-men le mans, not the for-chicken new version

  • this is a 956 not a 917

  • What a H O T ride !!!

  • I mean flat 12 cylinder

  • porsche 917 had a v10 twin turbo 5.something litre ,1000hp,it had the drivers seat in the middle of the ,230mph top speed and was outlawed in 1971 because it was too good for any other cars on the track..

  • I was able to find the complete video/documentary that this clip is from, and download it. The video that this clip is from is titled: "In-Car 956"

Derek Bell drives a Porsche 956 on some of the worlds most famous race courses, giving an in-car view and in-car sound of the 956 on those famous tracks and at speeds over 240 mph or more. You can do a search on torrentz website for "In-Car 956"

You will love this video, it is 45 minutes long.

  • awesome car and you know the engine is not going to explode like a ferrari lol

  • @kyberforce ; I would rather own a Ferrari and walk if it broke down than own or drive a fucking Porsche.

German cars have all the carisma of hepres...

Maybe you would compare the pile of german shit to something on a par like a corvette, but no a corvette is

not the holy grail, its not Italian and its not a Ferrari...thick cunt

  • @Pinin500 Hey, Shit for brains, don't excite that poor little thing inside your skull. Until furryarsehole, sorry, ferrari win as many Le Mans titles, across the board, as Porsche, shut the fuck up!!!

  • @Pinin500

Cut the crap. The old aircooled 911's had charisma in their droves and was far from civilized vehichles. This is the reason Porsche made them for 35 years before finally switching to watercooled engines.

And the Mercedes 300SL gullwing sure as hell had charisma, as did the BMW 2002 Turbo from the early 70's.

In the 80's yuppies drove Porsches because they discovered they couldn't drive the Ferraris hard on a racetrack and then to the office without it breaking down.

  • @Pinin500

Without the innovation of the British teams in Formula 1, we'd still be stuck in the 50's with wiremesh wheels, front engined cars, carburettors and no aerodynamic improvements. Oh, do I need to tell you American USAC indy-roadsters would still be seen as the top motorsport in such a world.

When Lotus defeated the American elite in Indianapolis 500 in 1965 the whole racing world realized where the true innovation was. That swung the pendelum

So you talk about charisma all you want

  • I've been a good boy. Can I have one, please, for Xmas?

  • reminds me of DC traffic

  • That's a Porsche 956. Never mind a great car. But not THE Porsche.

  • This is NOT a Porsche 917, this is either a 956 or 962! The 917 didn't have a turbo charger, it had a flat 12 cylinder engine, and you can absolutely hear the turbo charger every time the driver shifts gears in this car. The 917 didn't get a turbo engine until the Porsche 917/30 Can Am car in 1972.

  • @Lctoliver spot on with turbo!

  • @Lctoliver Wrong - the 917 was a turbocharged flat 12.

  • @westerner1 The Porsche 917 did not get a turbocharged engine until after 1970. Check the video "Porsche 917" at 4:54 (four minutes, fifty-four seconds), where it is mentioned about the 917's final non-turbocharged engine championship form, produced 630 horse power. You can find the video on this YouTube channel: gtonelmp

  • @westerner1 Also see video: "Porsche 917" on YouTube channel: lovegt40

Derek Bell talks about the Porsche 917 and the fact that it has a flat 12, air cooled engine, no turbocharger... at 2:40 (two minutes and forty seconds) into the video clip.

  • pero es un 917 parece que tiene turbo suena asi parece mas un canam ya que el de lemans no tenia turbo

  • i almost crushed my mouse watching this....i can drive like a mofo...but this...this is the next level, unbelievable

  • just the first 5 seconds of this vid is pure art

  • GREAT

  • It's a 956 from the early 1980s, just look at the other Group C-2 cars that he passes,

    - Nimrod maybe (?)

    - BMW Sauber

    - Porsche 934

    - Dome

The turbo 917s were Can-Am or InterSerie open cockpit cars...

  • @2002KMB Definately a 956 ... but also a classic

  • there were 917 with turbo and bigger engine then the le mans edition but that had over 1000 hp and was driven in some american race but i dont know wat its caled.

  • i think thats an 956

  • bloody FAST. I think its a 962 or a GT1, if it is a porsche, cos you can hear the chirrup from the wastegate. the cockpit looks later than that of a 917. Bloody fast tho

  • It's not a 917 for sure. You can hear the turbo in this car and the 917 had natural aspiration.

  • @RyosukeTakahashi14 wrong. The 917 was turbocharged.

  • @westerner1 You don't know what you are talking about....

The Le Mans 1970/71 917 had a V12 4.9 liters engine, naturally aspirated. The only turbocharged variants, were the 1973 Can-Am series, which had a 5.4 Twin-Turbocharged producing 1100hp and 1580hp, for race or qualifying respectively. Learn something before you deny my comment.

  • @RyosukeTakahashi14 it was a flat 12

  • @tiago1994rs Yes, and what did i say?

  • @tiago1994rs Damn, i wrote V12. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

    Yes, i know it's flat-12.

  • Beautifull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • And I thought flying airplanes was exhilirating....

  • this guy is FAST! great sound.thanks

  • This is not a 917 but a turbo 6 cylinder.

Can you hear the westgate working?

The 917 is a non turbo 12 cylinder air cooled engine.

  • I believe this is a Derek Bell in a 917. It has a flat 12 engine and the air sound you hear is the shifter.

  • Yes. 956. Sorry.

  • @paolo1949 Sorry but you`re wrong. Look it up in the Guiness book of records from 1984. The 917/30 CanAm was modified into a twin turbo charged 12 cylinder engine with 1535!!! horse powers (yes you read it correctly). Mark Doahue drove it at 435,7 km/h in Toullouse and set a world record that up to this day was never beaten. The 917/30 canAm made it from 0-100 km/h in only 2,2 seconds!!!. Forget motorbikes... they`re so lame.

    ;-)

  • @paolo1949 By the way, the reason this motor sounds as though it´s a 6 cylinder Porsche 911 engine is simply that the Porsche guys at Weißach took two 911 engines and put them together, i. o. words, so developing the famous Spider 12 cylinder engine.

  • this is a 956.

  • Comment removed

  • no es un 917

  • :-o ... :-) ...

  • This is onboard with Derek Bell in a 1983 Porsche 956. This is from the "In-Car 965" video.

  • This is a 956.

  • 917's were not turbocharged...what Porsche is this?

  • yes they where they had between 1100 and 1500 hp turbocharged

  • I don`t know exactly if the car of this video is or not a 917 but they were flat 12 bi-turbo.

  • I thought they were quad-turbo.

Nice video anyway, that car is so fast! My favorite racecar ever for sure.

  • 956...

  • must be 956 because this is in 1982 or 1983

  • It's 956 because this is either in 1982 or 1983.

  • This is either a Porsche 956 or 962. Blow-off valve from the turbo is the giveaway because the 917s that raced at le mans were naturally aspirated.

  • it´s not only the blow-off valve, but also the whole cockpit and windscreen that´s a givaway that it´s one of the group C Porsches.

Here it´s a factory Rothmans 956 driven by Derek Bell

  • Yes ,this is a 956L raced in 1982(if i remember corectly) at LM by Derek Bell.

  • @BMWizardofOz absolutely, i hate it when this shit happens and they label the video wrong

  • The Huneaudières Strait line without chicane! More than one minute at more than 350km/h... Fantastico!
