I had to watch this in class, and I love this play and Kenneth Branagh's approach to it, but high school kids are very... immature.

When she started her pelvic thrusting, the entire room was filled with laughter. Then there I was sitting sad because I felt really bad for Ophelia, and it wasn't meant to be funny.

Although this is a 'fringe theory', it was brought to light in my English class that, perhaps, Ophelia and the King had a relationship. Notice how he changes the subject, after her bit about losing her virginity. This would also support later on in the movie with the Queen and her recounting Ophelia's demise to the others. I quite like this theory. Just thought I'd pass it along. Kate does this role justice - bravo all 'round!

@emmactress1894 I actually am going to disagree. I like Helena Bonham-Carter a lot, but I really preferred Kate's portrayal to hers. Maybe it's just because the Mel Gibson version in general can't even come close to the acting and stunning cinematography in this one... I don't know. I always pictured Ophelia being soft, gentle, very feminine... I don't get that sense of grace with Helena. She can definitely do crazy though, but that's nothing new. :)

I agree. That's why I prefer Kate's portrayal to any other portrayal of Ophelia. Helena Bonham-Carter is a fantastic actress and does a great job but her performance does not remind me of Ophelia. I like Kate's because she portrays Ophelia as sweet and innocent even when she's gone mad.
