I used to go up to the Firetower a lot when I went to school from 95-99. I bought a new Jeep WK in 2006 and took it up there. The road was worse than I ever remember it. But the view at the top was beautiful as always. It was snowing up at the tower, but you could see the temperature line in the atmosphere that was warmer because the snow evaporated.
I lived in the house seen out the Oak Hall window at :49 sec. in from '93-'95. I was told it used to be the old rugby house. Well, we didn't play rugby but we had some ragin parties there. Insane 2 years but 2 of the best no doubt, still amazed I passed my classes.
I was up there 2 weekends ago and the firetower box and stairs have all been torn down. It is really sad to see. Now it looks like a glorified cell tower.
I went there two days ago and some dumb redneck said he was gonna call me in and charge me with a trespassing ticket. He said we was "tired of these F-ing kids tearing up his road" he said he spent $7000 on fixing the road. i'd say he wasted his money cause the ruts were so deep that i got a tire off the ground twice in my toyota...
THE FIRETOWER IS GONE! THE MTN IS A PRIVATE SUBDIVISION AND THE ROADS ARE PRIVATELY MAINTAINED! THE POLICE WILL BE CALLED AND YOU WILL BE EITHER TICKETED OR ARRESTED FOR TRESSPASSING!
SPIKE-STRIPS ARE PLACED ACROSS THE ROADS IN DIFFERENT AREAS! STAY AWAY!
still going strong, rent is 500 now, it's not furnished. i live on the far end unit, but not in the same place as you did. still base board heat but the windows are double pained, still orange counter tops, old oven, still crappy dungeon like washer/dryer area, olga and gene built a house on the property for their son, it overlooks the apartments, it's like a patrician/plebian type deal. i'm ready to move out. thanks for posting your video, it was very cool/surreal to watch.
Oak Hall was ancient 25 years ago! I lived on the 1st floor far end unit. It had base board electric heat & no insulated windows (single plate glass). In Winter, it got so cold, moisture would condensate on the inside windows & freeze. Rent was $250/mo for furnished unit (did not include power). I was up there during Xmas and was surprised to see Oak Hall was still there. I thought it would have been demolished by now :-)
1972 asu grad here. remember walking up to howards knob with pals my freshman year and also driving up occasionally to see view and drink beer or whatever. remembered the streets and turns on way up.boone was wild back then. great times.
1984 grad. here....ASU track and cross country team member.....I have run from town (from apartment behind Daniel Boone Inn) to both Howards Knob (when the windmill was there) as well as the firetower many times....Incredible views.....
i went to ASU from 2002 to 04, but still live here and have ridden by bike up there twice...its pretty incredible to ride up there, but so much fun going down!!
