The cone at the center of the prop contains the mechanisms to adjust the angle of the propeller blades relative to the airflow. This can increase airplane performance, reduce workload on the the engine, and provide better fuel economy. A "fixed pitch" propeller would not have this feature.
I have just restored a Bristol Hercules 14 cylinder radial sleeve valve engine and know the effort it takes to get them back to this condition, congratulations on such a good job.
Unfortunately, I am now looking for a replacement engine as mine seized up a few months ago at a WWII D-Day show. It was a lot of work to have it seize after only six hours of operation...
Congrats on the Herc! I KNOW that was a lot of work!!
@tlfrantz1 Great to see that engine running. In the 1960's a flew Piedmont Airlines (as a passenger) from Roanoke, Va to Atlanta, Ga and I always tried to sit next to the engine. Remember one night trip from Atlanta to Roanoke and the long flame of fire coming out of both exhausts on the port engine and it was just outside my window on one of Piedmont's Martin 404 planes. I think they bought them used from TWA and a few from Eastern. But they did have two P&W R2800 Wasp engines.
Music to my ears. Love the oil marks on the pavement behind (that weren't there at the beginning). I know it's got to burn off the oil in the lower cylinders, but I had no idea there'd be that much on the ground afterward.
The R2800 was and IS STILL one of the great masterpieces of mechanical engineering. I am just as big a fan of this magnificent powerplant as I am of the famous thoroughbred warrior which was designed especially to use it.....the venerable and legendary F4U. my friend, you are realizing a dream i have had since childhood....to have and to hold , an original P&W "Super Wasp".
I used to hear stories as kid, of complete, new engines still in the box available at auction. a dream if it were true
@sugardevil49 Years ago I would book short flights just to anywhere on American Convain 240's and Piedmont Martin 404's just so I could sit in a seat next 2 one of these engines. I well remember flying from Atlanta, Ga to Virginia in 1967 at night sitting next to the port engine on a Piedmont Martin 404 and the inside exhaust pipe was right next to my window and a long flame of fire was shooting out of it the entire flight. Plus the roar of the engine for that three hour flight was great to hear
a wonderful engine you have there. Im restoring an old Curtiss-Wright R-3350 32WA-engine and I´m looking for an ignition vibrator and a prop. If you can help, please let me know. Regards A. (Germany)
Congratulations on the successful start up. I'm looking at the exaust ending at the top of the engine and wondering if the engine itself is mounted upside down of if you have rotated the exaust manifold in relation to the cylinder heads.
Did you ever reserch the aircraft this engine came from.History, sounded great hearing it. Great Job with your mechanic skills.I can only imagin what it took working on one on a flightline on a runway someware in WWII.Now is the time you kick back and light up that cigar.
I was trying to model a 9 cylinder radial in a CAD system and I couldn't get it to work right. Now, either the slave connecting rods are not equispaced around the master rod at 40 degree angles, or the PCD of the slave rod journals is eccentric, or the slave connecting rods are all different lengths. I've seen some photos of an R-2800 master connecting rod and it is very difficult to see how they designed it. Do you know how it is designed?

Id bet if you were to restore a douglas dc6, and stick that baby on with the proper propeller, the plane would resume service. (the same with other aircraft that use the same motor.)thumbs up for those who agree.
@frontenginedragsterd Martin 404 and Convair 240 airliners used the P&W R2800 wasp engine. They were/are two engine planes. Happy you got it running. I lived near an airport growing up and sometimes those Martin's would backfire (like a shotgun discharging) and it would make me look toward the airport even though I knew what it was. At night one could see a long flame of fire coming out of the exhaust when they took off.
Well done you ! I bet you felt like a million dollars when she first started up. I would love to have one of these in my backyard, so that when the neighbours started playing their crappy music too loud, I could just fire it up and drown them out!
and b-26's, p-61's, c-46's, F7F Tigercats, Douglas Invaders and probably a crapload of other planes wich i never heard of. Im curios about the origin of this particular engine though ..
ive done some digging right now ,2800-77 was used on P47N, long range fighter at the pacific, found that Canadair CL-215 used R2800-83AM engines , so what you got there could be from a sea plane . :)

I've been looking at the listeroid genset too. We used to have a similar set up at the Vale of Neath Gliding club in Wales. Was sometimes hard to start the 2 cylinder lister beast in the height of winter. Its good to see that there are some real engineers out there who appreciate good old fashioned machinery!
Dude!! love the sound of a radial . I want to put one of these engines in an old army jeep. That would be the ultimate dragster! Though I would have to lengthen the jeep's frame to do so. But an amazing restoration of the pinnacle of piston aircraft engines. Sweet!!
Man, I love these old radial engines and their sound. I see a lot of them on youtube makes me wonder how do so many people have this old engines. Also, were do you go to get parts machined for these engineering masterpieces?
I have the same type of engine, but it's in my grandfather's woods... I wanna pull it out of there and pull it apart to see what I'd need to do to it... I'd be really happy to see it run...
Is it covered up? If its been exposed for some time, don't attempt it. One of the problems I had was the magnesium corroding on the inside; it corroded oil passages shut among other things. I had to replace the nose case as it has so much damage that I didn't see until I opened the engine. If you do this, Sky Power in Burbank, CA has a good supply of parts; also stuff shows up on ebay from time to time.
I think I've got 11-15k in it and I cut a lot of corners. (Could have been a lot more expensive) The problem is I started from ground zero; i.e., I didn't have anything going into the project. Some guys already have an engine or a prop or they work in a location where these things are available, so doing this isn't that big of a stretch for them. For me, it was a huge stretch and I'll never do it again.
i would so wanna drive down the highway with that thing on lol

I don't really know because the data plate was missing. I've narrowed it down to a
-77 or a -83; its a bread and butter R2800 as its a single-stage, single-speed engine. (one blower speed, one blower stage)

That's called a club prop to keep the engine somewhat cool, these engines are air cooled.
The club prop also provides some load for the engine to work against during tests.
