  • i would so wanna drive down the highway with that thing on lol

  • @viperd9111

I would call Al Gore and tell him I'm driving my "hybrid" vehicle! He would be thrilled!!

  • whats the purpose of the cone thing in the middle of the prop

  • @TheRebelman95

The cone at the center of the prop contains the mechanisms to adjust the angle of the propeller blades relative to the airflow. This can increase airplane performance, reduce workload on the the engine, and provide better fuel economy. A "fixed pitch" propeller would not have this feature.

  • Next step, attach a Corsair or Thunderbolt to it! Beautiful engine, great job.

  • I have just restored a Bristol Hercules 14 cylinder radial sleeve valve engine and know the effort it takes to get them back to this condition, congratulations on such a good job.

    What is next?

  • @millsie216

Unfortunately, I am now looking for a replacement engine as mine seized up a few months ago at a WWII D-Day show. It was a lot of work to have it seize after only six hours of operation...

Congrats on the Herc! I KNOW that was a lot of work!!

  • @tlfrantz1 Great to see that engine running. In the 1960's a flew Piedmont Airlines (as a passenger) from Roanoke, Va to Atlanta, Ga and I always tried to sit next to the engine. Remember one night trip from Atlanta to Roanoke and the long flame of fire coming out of both exhausts on the port engine and it was just outside my window on one of Piedmont's Martin 404 planes. I think they bought them used from TWA and a few from Eastern. But they did have two P&W R2800 Wasp engines.

  • @tlfrantz1 Hi,

I may need some of your help as I am setting up a R-2800 like you. Would you still have the trailer?

  • I came back to watch her run again. Beautiful!!

  • simply awesome.

  • Can I blame this guy for the extreme heat I had this summer? Thanks global warming

  • She sounds happy to be running!!! Nice work on a great restoration!!

  • Shes to fat .. Ya need ta lean it out Dude

  • Music to my ears. Love the oil marks on the pavement behind (that weren't there at the beginning). I know it's got to burn off the oil in the lower cylinders, but I had no idea there'd be that much on the ground afterward.

    Congratulations on this nice project.

  • MUSIC!!! well done from one radial engine owner to another :)

  • The R2800 was and IS STILL one of the great masterpieces of mechanical engineering. I am just as big a fan of this magnificent powerplant as I am of the famous thoroughbred warrior which was designed especially to use it.....the venerable and legendary F4U. my friend, you are realizing a dream i have had since childhood....to have and to hold , an original P&W "Super Wasp".

I used to hear stories as kid, of complete, new engines still in the box available at auction. a dream if it were true

  • @sugardevil49 Years ago I would book short flights just to anywhere on American Convain 240's and Piedmont Martin 404's just so I could sit in a seat next 2 one of these engines. I well remember flying from Atlanta, Ga to Virginia in 1967 at night sitting next to the port engine on a Piedmont Martin 404 and the inside exhaust pipe was right next to my window and a long flame of fire was shooting out of it the entire flight. Plus the roar of the engine for that three hour flight was great to hear

  • Hello,

a wonderful engine you have there. Im restoring an old Curtiss-Wright R-3350 32WA-engine and I´m looking for an ignition vibrator and a prop. If you can help, please let me know. Regards A. (Germany)

  • Give it some beans mate!!!

  • I accidently dissliked this video :( FUCK.

  • Now you just need the other 74% of the F4U Corsair!

  • Que palheitatas hen?

  • awww, that sound can never get old, cant wait till oshkosh this summer love the warbirds

  • Congratulations on the successful start up. I'm looking at the exaust ending at the top of the engine and wondering if the engine itself is mounted upside down of if you have rotated the exaust manifold in relation to the cylinder heads.

  • Great work!

  • You should release the truck's handbrake & let the R2800 power the truck!

  • why are the propellers so twisted in the wrong way?

  • Nice. Now go get it smog checked.

  • Did you ever reserch the aircraft this engine came from.History, sounded great hearing it. Great Job with your mechanic skills.I can only imagin what it took working on one on a flightline on a runway someware in WWII.Now is the time you kick back and light up that cigar.

  • beautiful engine, you've done a brilliant job of it,i take my hat off to you

  • The blades are now pitched properly; I couldn't get the pitch control to work so I just pulled the dome and repositioned the blades.

  • What's up with the pitch on those prop blades? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

  • that looks dangerous.......

  • Id bet if you were to restore a douglas dc6, and stick that baby on with the proper propeller, the plane would resume service. (the same with other aircraft that use the same motor.)thumbs up for those who agree.

  • @frontenginedragsterd Martin 404 and Convair 240 airliners used the P&W R2800 wasp engine. They were/are two engine planes. Happy you got it running. I lived near an airport growing up and sometimes those Martin's would backfire (like a shotgun discharging) and it would make me look toward the airport even though I knew what it was. At night one could see a long flame of fire coming out of the exhaust when they took off.

  • Well done you ! I bet you felt like a million dollars when she first started up. I would love to have one of these in my backyard, so that when the neighbours started playing their crappy music too loud, I could just fire it up and drown them out!

    Best regards. John.

  • @jdoubleur

Ha! How do deal with noisy neighbours! An R-2800 radial engine

    Beat that! LOL!

  • R-2800-77, C series engine, 500 manufactured by Chevrolet. Applications:

    Northrop P-61C

    Northrop XP-61C

    Republic P-47N

    Convair T-29A

    Chase C-123B

  • is that what they used to put in p-47's?

  • @DrHavoc1 Yes sir... P-47's and Corsair's as well.

  • @DrHavoc1 Also, if I'm not mistaken, the F8F Bearcat used the R2800 as well.

  • Comment removed

  • and b-26's, p-61's, c-46's, F7F Tigercats, Douglas Invaders and probably a crapload of other planes wich i never heard of. Im curios about the origin of this particular engine though ..

  • I don't really know because the data plate was missing. I've narrowed it down to a

-77 or a -83; its a bread and butter R2800 as its a single-stage, single-speed engine. (one blower speed, one blower stage)

  • ive done some digging right now ,2800-77 was used on P47N, long range fighter at the pacific, found that Canadair CL-215 used R2800-83AM engines , so what you got there could be from a sea plane . :)

  • -83's had 2 speed blowers

  • @DrHavoc1 this is the engine on the Corsair too i believe i may be wrong tho

  • @DrHavoc1 A few more: Douglas A-26 Douglas C-118 Convair C-131 Fairchild C-82 Fairchild C-123 Martin PBM-5 Grumman F6F Hellcat Lockeed PV-1 & 2 North American AJ-1& 2 Savage Sikorsky S-56
  • Kill them mosquitos!

  • love the way that thing torques the trailer. beautiful engine.

  • Congrats. for the restoration team! Impressive that a more than 50 years engine still run beautifully

  • As 25 years of pilot in command experience I can tell you

the torque alone would be enough to wash out most pilots.

Try landing that at night on a pitching carrier deck.

  • you KNOW the sound of that old r2800 take those geezers back to war, and they love it

  • that is so fuckt upp nice :D i love it

  • Good job on the restoration guys!

    Nice Sound and very smooth!

I've been looking at the listeroid genset too. We used to have a similar set up at the Vale of Neath Gliding club in Wales. Was sometimes hard to start the 2 cylinder lister beast in the height of winter. Its good to see that there are some real engineers out there who appreciate good old fashioned machinery!

I take my hat off to you

    Aerozine 50

  • Very Nice sweet sounding engine where is the corsair that goes with it. or Hellcat or Thunderbolt.

  • great sound, is there any video in which they accelerate it??, because that's the real engine sound.

  • Dude!! love the sound of a radial . I want to put one of these engines in an old army jeep. That would be the ultimate dragster! Though I would have to lengthen the jeep's frame to do so. But an amazing restoration of the pinnacle of piston aircraft engines. Sweet!!

  • Nice engine! But, isn't the prop in reverse pitch? Seems like it's a few degrees past feather.

  • I love the sound of a double radial.

  • Next question...do you have anything to put it in?

  • Man, I love these old radial engines and their sound. I see a lot of them on youtube makes me wonder how do so many people have this old engines. Also, were do you go to get parts machined for these engineering masterpieces?

  • loooool. nice small propellers =D

  • That's called a club prop to keep the engine somewhat cool, these engines are air cooled.

The club prop also provides some load for the engine to work against during tests.

  • I have the same type of engine, but it's in my grandfather's woods... I wanna pull it out of there and pull it apart to see what I'd need to do to it... I'd be really happy to see it run...

  • Is it covered up? If its been exposed for some time, don't attempt it. One of the problems I had was the magnesium corroding on the inside; it corroded oil passages shut among other things. I had to replace the nose case as it has so much damage that I didn't see until I opened the engine. If you do this, Sky Power in Burbank, CA has a good supply of parts; also stuff shows up on ebay from time to time.

Do you know what dash no. engine you have?

  • What kind of money does it take to restore an engine like that?

  • I think I've got 11-15k in it and I cut a lot of corners. (Could have been a lot more expensive) The problem is I started from ground zero; i.e., I didn't have anything going into the project. Some guys already have an engine or a prop or they work in a location where these things are available, so doing this isn't that big of a stretch for them. For me, it was a huge stretch and I'll never do it again.

  • Thats awesome man, let me know when you plan to fire it again! Josh

  • I guess you couldn't find a LH prop for it?

  • I can't get the blasted prop out of feather. I'm going to try applying oil pressure to the feathering port to see if it'll unfeather.

  • Few cans of WD40 and some man handling will always do the trick :D

  • Thanks, Alphagr; this project spans almost two years and it does indeed feel good to see it work.
