  • the performance at the theatre was wonderful!

  • THIS is friendship.....................

  • Anyone else wish Anthony Hopkins said to him that he loved him? It's almost as if he was waiting for it.

  • could anyone tell me...what is the song at the end of this clip? it's so familiar.

  • @jeezmeg It's been killing me to, but I finally remembered. It's from the movie PLATOON with Charlie Sheen

  • @jeezmeg yes it was Platoon, but this movie was released well before that.

  • What?????????? Why was he dying?????

  • @nikemac84 broncatiatiutus

  • I was so incredibly touched by this movie. What a beautiful, kind and loving soul he was. The part of the film where John is given a standing ovation at the theater after years of abuse and people screaming in horror and running away is so deeply emotional. RIP John....

  • human nature you cant hide and you cant run, its around us and within us

  • As said by Elton John- "your candle burned out long before your legend ever did".. When working on a project of people I admire mosy- Joseph was included.... would have loved to known you...

  • i would be honored to count Mr. Merrick as my friend... RIP

  • Take a good look around people. By human nature we all are drawn into the facination of something that is not of the norm. What you do with it judges you. The essance of a person is not dictated by their apperance but by the character of the individual. This is a classic pitorial of how people in general respond and act and it is disgusting. Next time have some compassion for a fellow human being.

  • this true

  • awwww man im crying again, i just care for him soo much. i often think of himas my best friend too, and i would have reacted the same way as mr. treves, true

  • Thank God that he ended his life with friends and people who cared about him and showed it.

  • i wonder what they play was that they were watching. (curiosity)

  • @samanddeanfan2009 I think its a play called "Broken Hearts" from 1875 and revived in 1888, starring Miss Kendal. It was a fantasy play about these women who run away to an island because their hearts were broken by the ones they loved. The only man allowed on the island is a servant who is disfigured, and eventually he and one of the woman on the island fall in love. In the end they both struggle through the apathy of the other women and live, at last, happily ever after...

  • I say that when people are being rude or mean to me! "I'm a Human Being Too"!!!

  • im crying again :'(

  • RIP- Joseph Merrick... May God be the one who loves you more

  • Every time that man speaks, my heart melts <3

  • those bitches

  • Best part is when Mr. Merrick was reunited with his best friend, Mr. Trieves. "Please, you musn't blame yourself. Don't worry about me. I am happy every hour of the day...my life is full...I know that I am loved. I would not have been able to say that if it wasn't for you"....one of the most touching lines of the movie. I LOVE IT!!

  • As a 13 year old i thought this movie was total BS but i realize this is the greatest movie that anyone could watch. I feel ashamed that we do this without knowing everyday.....

@cathavenfostermom1 you are right he was an angel that showed kindness to everyone yet he was beaten and abused. RIP Joseph Merrick

  • "my life is full, because I know that I am loved" That is so brilliant... I love this film. Joseph Merrick was truly a walking inspiration.

  • Sometimes God sends angels down from heaven to walk

among us to see how we will treat them.

They sometimes appear in the lowliest forms, as someone you would

think is an alcoholic in line at a soup kitchen, a grumpy old lady

or a person with a mental disorder, or a cripple of some kind.

Its to see if we will judge by appearances.

I wonder if Joseph Merrick was an angel sent by God to test

the people of the world during that time; if so then it appears we have failed

  • @cathavenfostermom1 We can only hope for more people like Mr. Treves, Mrs. Mothershead, Madge Kendal, and Princess Alexandra.

  • @SamhainTheDark, agree. God bless!

  • people can be so cruel. now back in the 1890s, you could possibly blame this cruelty on the ignorance of the period. but now, its almost 2011, and it seems we are treating each other worse than ever. and better too.

  • @sosidecop64 i could not agree more on what you said. back then such a man as john and his appearance was almost one hundred percent unheard of, to see such a man was like seeing the devil. but now we see things like this quite often, the tree man, so on and so forth. but the way people treat john merrick in this is the way your cocky assholes treat your average nice person in this era, and whats worse is more relenting they are now a days. i hate this world, because it's going to waste.

  • what a horrible life this man mustve had....screw every single one of you people who laughed at him...hurt him..made him feel like he was anything less than a normal human being....i pray if theirs angels that hes one of them

  • That part at 0:53 was the most teary eyed parts in the movie because that line was so true he was not a animal he was a human being like everyone else weather they were born normal or with a disablity

  • sooo touching when the doc just runs up and hugs him!!!

  • 1:04-1:05 my heart just tore up at this part

  • @theperfectmorning sorry I have to mooch comments, but theres a meek, perfect sweetness to john merrick that john hurt does that amazes me...great actor.

  • For only a space of time John merrick unleashed sublime godly power in those 5 words " I am not an animal". It is as if I had seen a bright light or an aoura surrounding him as he spake. it was the most devastatingly, powerfully beautiful scene in this entire movie...RIP John Merrick

  • omg that's anthony hopkins

  • @moozicx Yep this was from his Early days.

  • looook look loooook!!!

that's what I do when I see fat people on the bus. :D

  • @Zarathustra799 if there is a hell, then you will definately go to it you bastard

  • The sad thing is, if he was alive today, they coulda cured him....

  • @Oceanpacifica1968 ...I'm sad now D':

  • What is the name of the song playing during the theatre show at 4:17 - 6:32? its such a beautiful song! I would very much like to know.

  • This movie makes me cry.

  • So I don't get it. Was John his nickname and Joseph his real name?

  • @cronin098 John wasn't his nickname. the person who told the story [ i can't recall his name, but i think it was the doctor ] was very old when he told it and his memory was fading so he just said john instead of joseph. so it was an accident.

  • @2:00 Does Ms Kendall know that John is dying. I ve seen the movie twice and didn't catch that.

  • The music at the end sounds just like the music used in Platoon

  • Run John Run

  • I seem to remember a different scene where he says "I am not an animal". It was more like "I am not an animo".

    Anyone remember that?

  • damn bastards, i hope the get hit by a bus, and get turned to vegetables so i can personallyruin their lifes by drawing on their faces, and mabe other stuff i cant think of right now. jerks

  • Ah, the glorious theater! Where so-called spectacles and so-called animals are loved and applauded rather than scorned in derision! Brilliant movie, brilliant tribute to a brilliant soul, John Merrick.

  • Joseph Merrick, to be exact. Don't know why he's known by both names.

  • finally John Merrick is applauded and gets the recognition he deserves ♥ :'-)

  • This is an empowering moment in the film, if you think about it. For once in his life, John was able to defend himself against a group of unfeeling assholes by using his voice to declare that he is human.

  • after the last few scences i cant help but smile this is one of the saddest yet inspiration stories ever

  • this made me cry

  • 9:35 Theme song of Platoon? O_o

  • Yes, the "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber who was an acclaimed classical composer in his own right.

  • "Don't worry about me, my friend. I am happy every hour of the day. My life is full - because I know that I am loved..."

Thank you so much for uploading this. What a masterpiece...

  • ok call me a pussy

but tears rolled down my eyes when at the theatre when he got his standing ovation

never happened before from watching anything

    so happy for him

  • we all cryed about him...

i think this film must be show in every school! it´s the best teaching in humanity!

    very thx for upload!

  • @JaniLaGazza i completely agree, so many kids and teens are cruel to others!! this should teach them how to be more humane!!

  • Ignorant assholes

  • this movie is amazing i watch this movie telling myself not to cry but its impossible the way you fell for him hoping something good will come and it does this poor man who was called a freak is now a well respected man a great movie R.I.P Joseph Merrick you were a great man you will always be loved :)

  • I was inspired to look up this clip after visting London's Playhouse Theatre last night, where the theatre scene was shot. Me and my brother were two of those four flowers you see appear at 5.57. The Puss In Boots panto scene was shot over 3 days and choreographed by the lateTerry Gilbert (who's life paralleled Billy Elliot's... a prodigy ballet dancer from a Derbyshire mining village). I was 11 and got paid £15 per day (cash) and got 3 days off school. Amazing to see it again..

  • Adagio for Strings...

  • 7:37 oh the greatness of scripts and double meanings. At first he was told to stand up so people would laugh at him, but now so people could honor him.

  • wonderful scene. he slept.

  • What's the play he went to? The music is exquisite

  • John Hurt gives THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS LIFE in this film. He is an incredible, amazing actor.

RIP poor Joseph Merrick, no one can hurt you now.

  • @Sas26100 i was actually thinking of asking if it was john merrick as himself. i agree. no one can hurt him now. not where he is. *tear, tear*

  • Leave John Merrick alone!

  • human are indeed a special breed. i remember when i was seven, and just started going into grade school after chemotherapy, all my classmates gather around and look at me and commented bout my sparse hair, like a disease or cursed. I cannot understand why if you can have dogs or cats at home and you accept them, but you cannot accept someone who is different because they have something different in or on them.

  • Cassie, it never fails to amaze me how cruel people can be. Fortunately there are good people in the world also and I hope you've met some. I hope things went well for you and you are in good health.

  • Cassie, I was "the fat kid" I kind of know what you went through, Bless you and your house. My grandmother gave me one piece of advice, maybe it'll clarify the real reason you and I were targets. "never expect people who hate themselves to like you anymore."

  • @saletious

Incredibly true... words of wisdom for all of us.

  • @cassiezheng1983 would you be instantly willing to accept a dog or a cat with the face of a human???? would you gawk & stare???

  • @cassiezheng1983 Well said; I do believe the same thing was said in early 80's by Ryan White- AIDS victim banned from school

  • being

  • 00:38 '' i am not an elephant i am not an animal i am i human deing i m man ''

When i heard it i was screaming like'' Yeeesss Finaly he did it he did it " It was so emotional momend for me !!!!!

    The most inspiring film ever!!!!!!!!!

  • yaa that's the best part

mr. creeves is a very nice man as well

  • His name is actually Joseph Merrick.

  • whats that music playing at around 9:40 its very commonly used in movies

  • Corrupt140, It's 'Adagio for Strings' arranged by Samuel Barber

  • its also in platoon.

  • john Merrick is loved always

  • its not that he lookes diffrent its itresting its the whole storie of the existence of John Merric.. i saw the movie its very good

  • Poor Merrick, just leave him be!

  • I am not ashamed to admit that I always shed a few tears when the doctor embraces poor Mr. Merrick (at 1:34) when he returns.

Though not historically accurate, this is a great movie nonetheless.

  • this is one of the best movies i have ever seen

  • 'I am not an animal, I am a human being'

One of the most touching lines in this movie.

  • inspiring

  • Tyvm for uploading this movie!
