  • This was my grandfather and grandmother favorit song. Thy loved it so much that to them it was thair song.

  • wonderful! Thank you!

  • WOW. His voice is very well-caught here. Very good!

  • I agree. I just listened to both and there's nothing to compare. Lanza's was amateurish and unpolished while Peerce's was masterfully sung. Age is nothing here; Peerce sang better at 75 than Lanza did at 25 anyways!

  • AUDIOPHILE: I think that's a bit excessive, but that's all I'll say before I start another argument. =P

  • Peerce sings it better then lanza as far as the way it should be sung, not over the top, good rendition. The caruso sound track is better for lanza but God, Tucker and Jussi also did it very well.

  • Great job by Jan,

  • Magnificent...one of the best broadway renditions by an operatic tenor that I've heard.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH for posting this!!!!! Like everything else on the album, Peerce sings VERY well on this song. OUTSTANDING performance by an OUTSTANDING artist!

  • Caruso himself of course made song famous with his 1912 recording in the original French. Of English renditions among Peerce's, Tucker and McCormack also did wonderful renditions, Leonard Warren sang a spectacular recording of it with piano accompaniment. It's hard to pick a favorite when there are so many good ones, and of course age is not a factor here because Peerce in many ways got better as he aged. I'll post Tucker's rendition (and Warren's if I have time to rip it onto the comp.)

  • Is your Warren recording from the Russia recitals? I'll be posting some of those coming up.

  • It's his 1947 Victor recording with Willard Sektberg accompanying on piano. It's the only recording I have of him singing it, I'd love to hear the one from his Russia recitals.

  • They're on the way; will post excerpts soon.

  • Splendid. My favorite is the recording Lanza made for the "Great Caruso" soundtrack. But of course, Lanza was roughly 20 yrs younger than Peerce was when he made this one!
