If a nation applies for membership, what shall we do? Simply tell them to piss off? NATO has an open-membership policy, if a nation applies the other members have a council and decide whether or not it'd be fine for them to join the organization. Russia isn't Soviet anymore, so I don't see why they'd be worried about a military alliance that was mainly composed to keep operating costs of our military forces to a minimum.
Plus, Russia is a huge country with a powerful military to boot. No one wants to fight that battle because it'd be one hell of a bloody one for sure. The Russians have always been known for their tenacity, drive, and overall willingness to do what needs to be done in times of war as demonstrated by their participation in both World Wars. I think the US lost that after WWII, if it isn't a conflict of that magnitude most of the American public refuses to commit to it.

NATO has an open-membership policy, if a nation applies the other members have a council and decide whether or not it'd be fine for them to join the organization. Russia isn't Soviet anymore, so I don't see why they'd be worried about a military alliance that was mainly composed to keep operating costs of our military forces to a minimum.

Plus, Russia is a huge country with a powerful military to boot. No one wants to fight that battle because it'd be one hell of a bloody one for sure. The Russians have always been known for their tenacity, drive, and overall willingness to do what needs to be done in times of war as demonstrated by their participation in both World Wars. I think the US lost that after WWII, if it isn't a conflict of that magnitude most of the American public refuses to commit to it.

I'm not questioning the morale or bravery of the United States armed forces, I love them. My father has served 21 years in the Navy as a Corpsman and is still active-duty. But I know that the American public generally lacks the stomach for a long drawn out conflict. Look at how Vietnam turned out, look how the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are panning out. We like the wars quick and easy, but if they require too much time or lives we tend to lose patience.

They intervened only in -65 when the war had been going on for 10 years already and had only about half a million men in Vietnam whereas ARVN had one million men and NVA about 300 000. On top of that, NLF probably had over one million supporters/combatants. Vietnam war was mainly a Vietnamese civil war where China, Russia and the US took sides.
