  • Che gli farei ....:)

  • Please, come to Brazil, M. Jaroussky!

  • Stunning ! I rest my case - no more to say!

  • they all look like they really enjoy playing together

  • Why isn't this man performing at the Met in NYC?

  • J 'aime pas , j'adore !!

  • Beautiful

  • This is amazing, really, really beautiful. While listening to this aria song I feel like I were in Italy in XVIII century... It's just heavenly

  • Superb musical line and greatly professional performance...it is unique to hear a male perform such a heavy vocal piece...I am just wondering if using his male normal tone would sound better...a definite sucess either way.

  • “Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.” -Anonymous

  • hermoso

  • LOVE this!! x

  • meravigliosa aria

    meravigliosa voce

    gradevolissimo viso

  • You could have sex with that voice...

  • I have the feeling this aria is a bit too low for his voice. It does not fit him well and does not permit him to display fully his talent

  • @perles75 Or is it maybe that this aria was written for a castrato with a wider range than any countertenor can ever have? I tend to agree with you, but this is a fine performance none the less.

  • Magnifique!

  • stunning!

  • @VacnaPaul - - Jaroussky does not run out of breath; he can sing runs many times longer than the run at 2.40 with ease. At 2.40 the music ends on a very low note for a soprano, where it is harder to make the same amount of sound as in the middle and high registers, especially when singing a coloratura passage, where you must stay in one technical place in order to execute it effectively. Jaroussky sings lower notes with much more power when they are isolated, further along in the aria.

  • It's like a fresh breeze in a summer evening when he started singing. So comforting and so soothing!!!

  • i really love the passion that this people put in all they do..you can see that they love what are they doing.... i think is baroque to complete this magic poison!

  • Your tag should really read "Galante" or "Pre-classical" rather than "Baroque". Gluck broke rather radically with the conventions of Baroque Opera (as practiced by his rival J. A. Hasse)

  • FFS these ginger people have no soul!! i lost at 1

  • LOL i lost

  • Some people are strange, indeed . I don't see how Jaroussky could annoy anyone even though I can understand people not keen on this type of music and singers.

  • fantastico chico...no lo habia escuchado...

  • that conductor is stunning!

  • GLORIeuse ET MONSIEUR JAROUSSKY !

  • Poor orchestral balance thanks to the mikes. Damned if I can hear that harpsichord.

  • mics sorry was anoying me. you're right though

  • you are a simple and common.

  • sorry u feel that way...

  • you are not wrong, for some reason, here he lacks perfection in control. The notes seem to end without a closing. I saw other interpretation and was falwless. I may be because of the audio. Of course, I'm only reffering to 'some' of the runs. Anyway he's a cutie pie.

  • ok, only one run :)... the one at 2:40, it's like he runs out of breath. And btw he's the first classical artist I've seen with such joy and childish gestures in his performance. He's brilliant!

  • lol u know how hard that piece is lol, he doesnt runs out of breath, its just low for falcetto ;)

  • It's actually not a falsetto. Jaroussky is a counter tenor, a rare type of singer who can sing in the alto and soprano ranges. For those more acquainted with popular music, think Michael Jackson. The effect used to be obtained artificially by castrating prepubescent boys, known as castrati.

  • He sings with the fleeting beauty and ability of a bird's!!! LOL- I love that!!! =)

  • So, so, so, so, soooooo beautiful!!!!

  • Philippe's voice flows like golden maple syrup in the morning sun. I could almost taste it!

  • @StephenChin1

creepy~... but Thumb up anyways(cuz I feel the same :p)

  • @StephenChin1 That is the gayest thing I have read all year.

  • Does anyone know whether there's a DVD with all these recordings of Haïm & Le Concert D'Astrée?

    Haïm is amazing!

  • Of course she is actually Quite a few monthspregnant! bravo for the good work! Can't even imagine how many hours they were stuck there, and that baby must have been kicking!

  • Great lesson on 'how to trill' at 0:56

  • So beautiful. His voice seems a little nose stuffy. Even so he sings so good.Thank you for posting again.

  • Favoloso!

  • beautiful performance. beautiful voice.

the leader is also very lovely, i wonder if she is pregnant?

  • Does anybody know who the conductor is?

  • Emmanuelle Haïm one of the most important baroque singers of our time ;)

  • I think she is Emmanuel Haim, the one who conducts many Dessay´s performances.

  • I love both, maybe not the best singers ever, but great!

  • No one is able to sing perfect trills: Just listen to this FOURTEEN soprano COLORATURA singing the final trill of the aria "o zittre nicht" of the magic flute; no one makes perfect

  • and... even if cecilia bartoli has great coloraturas (vocalisis) and trills, it does not sound legato.

  • i think it's impossible to make a trill with the voice like a piano or a violin does... it's not supposed to sound like that.

I think it's just like a trill in a brass (trumpet, or a french horn) even if there're few (très peu) persons able to do outstandig trills

  • It sounds as if the vibrato is a bit more pronounced. The technique is the same as when a woman makes a trill. Cecilia Bartoli, for example, makes excellent trills, Jaroussky should sound the same. But keep in mind that trills are very difficult!

  • Cecilia Bartoli's trills are rapid fire! It is amazing that she can do that.

  • He's got a great countertenor voice. I'd like to ask though, is he actually doing trills? Or can countertenors trill at all?

  • Yes, they do trills too.

  • what does it sound like? every time Jaroussky attempts a trill, it sounds... not very good.

  • Beautiful opera piece presentation.*****

  • This is a wonderful piece! I love it !

    Philippe Jaroussky is amazing!!!

  • wow, Philippe, what a wonderful piece of art!

    Who is the conductor?

    Christian

  • hey,,that women and her name Emmanuelle Haïm

Italians do it better

  • I agree that he's awesome but I also agree that he has some technique flaws. I personally have a hunch that he was trained with a french technique which doesn't stress vowel modification and teaches a natural breath instead of the italian exagerated singers breath or the "appogio" technique. He doesn't raise his soft palate and his larynx is in a relatively high position so it's a wonder that he makes such glorious music.

  • Ok, so you think that this music doesn't need appoggio?

  • all music needs it but normally having a good appoggio technique will cause the line to be more legato as well as keeping a vibrant tone (vibrato) through all longer notes which he doesn't do. He uses straight tone for effect and for stylistic reasons. Italians also teach relaxed low larynx technique which allows alot of resonating space. This is missing in Jaroussky's singing though it doesn't cause a noticable difference or offensive tone at least to my ear.

  • i agree with you , plus no voice chest. i personally like derek

  • ...far from perfect but absolutely divine,

    isn´t it a contradiction?!

  • Jaroussky's technique is far from perfect. I would say it's pretty decent, but could use some work especially in releasing neck and shoulder tension.

But he sounds absolutely divine to me, so I'm not going to complain about it :P.

  • I don't think this is enough to approach belcanto.

  • Do you mean bel canto technique or bel canto repertoire?

  • I mean both. It seems not supported by technique, and lacks beauty in extreme parts of range. I also remark bad pronunciation... (I am italian). Don't you think this singer is a bit overvalued?

  • I have discovered Jaroussky only recently, so I´m not biased by his fame. I think his technique is rather excellent, I don´t think it lacks the elegant touch of the period. Pronunciation is not perfect, true. (I´m Spanish but speak Italian)

  • I agree. I have known him for some time and I think that his technique is perfect and rather bel cantista, but he is singing baroque, that may be makes you feel strange.

Also, his pronunciation is better than the most of franch singers (I'm Spanish too, but I sing in Italian)

  • Gluck was not a bel canto composer.

Listen to the vivaldi arias sung by jaroussky.

    He is not overvalued.

    andre rieu is overvalued...

  • And why shouldn't Gluck be a belcanto composer?

  • Gluck played a major role in Reform Opera during the mid-18th Century, whereas the Bel Canto movement didn't reach it's height until the likes of Rossini in the early to mid-19th century. That's why Gluck isn't a Bel Canto composer

  • It seems you red quite approximative books of History of music. Gluck is a more articulated figure.I'd suggest you to update your knowledge, and being so young as you are I am sure you'll have time to read more. Meanwhile, enjoy Gluck as a Belcanto AND Reformed composer... or as you like! hahah Ciao. :)

  • Gluck played a major role in Reform Opera during the mid-18th Century, whereas the Bel Canto movement didn't reach it's height until the likes of Rossini in the early to mid-19th century. That's why Gluck isn't a Bel Canto composer

  • Gluck's production is divided into several parts, and periods. This aria is a perfect belcanto example.

  • Yes, this aria does share some similar elements with Bel Canto, however Gluck is NOT a Bel Canto composer and this is NOT a Bel Canto aria. Almost every aria in the repertoire have different parts to them. Some forms are Ternary, Binary, Rounded Binary, Strophic, or Rondo. Does this mean that because all of these arias have several parts that they are all Bel Canto arias? No, and neither is this one. It is an aria from a REFORM OPERA by Gluck, who is NOT a Bel Canto composer.

    (period)

  • Demofonte is not a "reform" opera, since as you might know the first "reform" opera is from 1762. This aria is full of the most exquisite Belcanto elements, and you maybe hear "galante" or "manhaim" elements which aren't classical yet and not "reformed". This aria could have easily been written by Hasse, or Graun, or Jommelli. And when I speak about "parts" i mean "periods" in Gluck's life and work style.

  • You are absolutely right aleiv. And musicguru62988 is wrong. Demofoonte (1743) is an opera seria and nothing else, composed much before the first attempts of Gluck to reform opera (1762). And by the way, the expression "bel canto" is not confined to Rossini or Bellini. We already talk about bel canto in workd by Cest, for example.

  • Thanx a lot! It started to be tiring :D

  • It is true that bel canto isn't really Jaroussky's forte. However his sound is pleasing to the ear...and he's cute. =]

  • great video

    thanks nina

    hope to see more

and i am interested in your newsletters

    keep in touch

  • i hope jaroussky release all anthology of his repertoire from sedecia until now as tribute to the greatest counter tenor in modern life with cd box set anthology bonus dvd collection of all clips interviews award ceremonies concerts and opera scenes photo gallery of jaroussky from childhood until now also book talk about his own life from a to z
  • Where do all these videos from Jaroussky's recording sessions come from? Is there a commercially available DVD?

  • Simply sublime!

  • It's interesting to compare this aria with the version by Mozart (K 368)with the same text, which has exactly the same alternance of slow and fast tempi. He probably new this aria before writing his !

  • Gluck is amazing! Even his operas written before his reforms are superb! Already then he showed a display of carachteristics that made him all diferent from the composers such as J. C. Bach, Jommeli, Piccini, Rameau, Latelli and others who were most popular then. Gluck was far ahead of his time. A true genius!

  • Do you know the great scene of Antigono recorded by Bartoli? Though it is in a classical opera seria, this scene is out of time. Music, drama, form, orchestra are quite extraordinary. Even the recitative is beautiful, moving, terrifying. It is so different and energetic that I understand why Metastasio wrote "Gluck has surprising fire; but he is mad". He was unable to understand such a genius.

  • Agree with you.I like very much the arias of Gluck, before and after his reform. I think he is the best composer of the neoclasicism

  • Magnifico! Thank you for posting this video. Jaroussky should be in a movie; he has a sublime voice and as a bonus he is so handsome. How about a movie about a Castrato, but this time with a voice that makes merit to the Baroque music.

  • Emmanuelle Haim is incredible, and ofcourse Jaroussky is simply sublime.

  • Jarousky is also really handsome... I know, this has nothing to do with music, but I can't help !

More seriously he is one of the best countertenor !

  • Thank you very much for the these videos^^

  • love this voice

  • Thank you very much for these videos, BaroqueFever. I like them very much.

    : )

  • Thanks for this, Nina. It seems so easy for him to sing this, it's incredible. And it's always a pleasure to see Emmanuelle Haïm's crazy hair and funny faces. What a beautiful pregnant woman. The baby will become a Baroque musician, for sure, haha!

  • You're welcome.

I find it interesting to compare this version of "Sperai" to Vivaldi's version - same opera, same lyrics; but musically, what a difference!

  • I love both.

Thank you for posting the new videos.

  • Indeed! What a huge difference! I love Gluck's better...especially for Philippe's wonderful work on the passage(that is almost inexistent) between his usual falsetto and those chest notes...wild combination!Thank you for the videos!
