Yup, check out the Eastern California rifting, one that splits off Vancuver Island, and does a wee bit of volcanism and a tango with a subduction zone for a while, at the Cascades, and then rifts in full basalt glory from just north of Death Valley - on down through the Owens valley, and then on to the Salton Trough, near Palm Springs. Soon, that rift become the Sea of Cortez, and then eventually a mid-oceanic ridge. Let's do the tectonci two step!
