@SuperBananaChannel How is he German? Because he's German! He is the Emcee of a nightclub in BERLIN, which is in GERMANY. Apparently they have a lot of patrons who speak French and English, because he says everything 3 times, in German, French, and English. So when he speaks English, it's with a German accent, not a French accent. Germans can say "Je suis enchanté" and remain German. Can't believe you missed the fact that the lyrics are in three languages.
@SuperBananaChannel um, okay then, when he speaks French, it's with a German accent, not a French accent. You made a snarky comment about the actor not doing a good French accent, when the character is the one speaking French as a second language. And I'm done defending him to you; I'm sure you have a long list of successful and talented people you need to go snipe at from the comfort of your computer chair. Carry on.
LOLOLOL i didnt know Norbert played this role!! ahaha its great! i love it! hes amazing! i love how all the emcees bring their own special thing to it haha
Joel grey was the Orginal........DUMB ASSES!! won the tony and the OSCAR!!! for his EMCEE role......Liza also won the tony and the oscar for her role as Sally........know your show history!
He's obviously very talented, but he lacks any form of charisma and originality. Here he is trying to combine the naivete of Joel Grey and the sexuality of Alan Cumming. He's failing miserably.
@WorldOfTopsyTurvydom This performance was early on in the tour. I saw the tour a couple of months in when the cast was all comfortable with each other, and Norbert was excellent as Emcee. Very compelling. So much so that he won two awards, I believe.
@peteyiom2 Manly? Well I guess, but he is usually a little goofy, I mean yeah he is being the MC in this I know what you mean lol but what about Freddy in DRS?
jesus! HOW MANY BROADWAY STARS PLAYED TIS GUY?!?!? Raul esparza', adam pascal, neil patrick harris, alan cumming AND NOW NORBERT LEO BUTZ?!?!?! next i'm gonna find a video of colm wilkinson doing this!
@janjalick dont forget john Stamos and also in london and on uk tour 2006-2009 Wayne Sleep, Julian Clary, James Dreyfus, Alister McGowen
lol its a great part i would love to play it --- also i would pay anything to see Colm play the part lol (Uk tour costumes tho i dont think i would survive seeing him in very little like the b'way costumes )
@TalulahCarmichael Raul Esparza is a Broadway actor who goes between musical and dramatic work, most well-known as Bobby in the Company revival. He's got a very unique, rich voice with lots of vibrato (he's never had voice lessons), and tends to play roles that require extreme charisma and showing off. His Cabaret clips are all over Youtube, and he does a very good job.
NPH played it, yes, although I personally think he seemed a little restrained.
Green fairy I think perhaps you are carrying in baggage when you watch this clip or perhaps it is the rushed nature of this TV performance. I saw Butz do this role and he was the BEST Emcee I have ever seen.
Ohhh, when I said he was kind of masculine, I didn't really think it was a bad thing. I appreciate that it is DIFFERENT and it's his own. And definitely hott.
You know what though? Compared to some other Emcee performances...there is something completely masculine about his. Like...when Alan Cumming does it, it is so flaming. Norbert, not so much. I get a little bit of a frat boy vibe when he improv dances at certain parts...anyone else?
I agree 100%. So many times I see performers unable to "play straight." I dont sense the sexual ambiguity with him. He is a straight guy pretending to be gay. I wish I were as talented...but you are right.
Not sure how I feel about the emcee being shirtless, tho. And it's not because I'm straight; I'm gay, as it happens. Somehow I'd prefer he be "tuxed" out, maybe to make more of a contrast with the Kit-Kat girls. YMMV
Awesome

I think Norbert is fantastic in this role. Would have loved to see him..but I don't think this show is appropriate for a 2 year old.
ilseneumanns 1 week ago
Hm. Not the role for Norbert, I think. He has too much masculine physicality and emcee requires androgyny. But he's still one of the best around.

@BubbleGumClaudia Liza didn't originate the role on Broadway. Jill Haworth did and she wasn't even nominated for a Tony Award.
