Lots of fighting right up to (and after for the new Zimbabwean Army) the announcement of the election results Mar.04, 1980. RLI was disbanded in 1980 after independance (see theRLI Association website) - most soldiers de-mobbed and went back to civy life; some went to SADF; many stayed in the new Zimbabwean Army and did their best to adjust to the new Mugabe reality/regime. It actually went well for the first 2 years after 1980 but then began to disintigrate for various reasons.

Crap... they lost the war because left wing agitators put pressure on their left wing governments who in turn isolated Rhodesia. Mugabe and the rest of his mad dogs were no match for neither RLI, the Selous Scouts, SAS or any other Rhodesian unit - the cuban soldiers were another story. However the war was not lost in the bush but in Washington and London. That is the facts and no matter how much Mugabe howls and pounds his chest, the fact remains the same.

You do have to admit that Rhodesia was never going to exist indefinately. I mean it was the white minority that had all the power in an African country. Maybe if the government had not been so racist and had shared power there would not have been a need for the civil war. ZANLA and ZANU prevailed because they had the support of the people.

Well... considering the world as it is and as it were when the iron curtain fell, I agree insofar as it is unrealistic to consider a Rhodesia as it were then existing today. However having said that then i completely disagree regarding the popular support of ZANLA and ZANU. They had the support of some of the people, however as the present farce regarding the elections in Zimbabwe clearly shows then they clearly dont have the support of a major part of the population.

You're right there. Mugabe had the chance to continue democracy but he chose dictatorship instead. I'm still holding hope though that he'll lose power this time, only his cronies who are profiting from his regime are supporting him.

Its sad really: Rhodesia/Zimbabwe had so many opportunities and possibilities. If Mugabe had any format or was sufficiently savvy, then he could have turned it into a modelcountry in which whites ciould live next to blacks and made the country prosper. However he clearly chose not to, instead aligning the country with communism and against white people and any opposition in general. Thus he proved all those right who claimed he was no better than the worst the rhodesians could muster.
