Actually they did the math and although Nolan Ryan broke it a long time ago at 100, the measurements for calculating the speed were different (they used to measure the speed 50-55ft off the mound instead of out of the pitchers hand today). After doing the math nowadays you'll find he actually would've thrown it 108 mph using todays radar guns.

My uncle is Chuck Hernandez and he told me Zumaya has been known to throw it 105mph-106mph in warm ups for fun. but it's really wild, dangerous cuz he could throw his arm out, and the pitch looks like a mess. Zumaya's world record is 104.6 which is technically faster then 104. the extra .5mph is a big deal. also know that his 104.6mph record is for a pitch. which is 60ft away from the plate. if he threw half that distance he could easily clock in at 106. next time do ur homework!

Only partially. Arm action and build also have a lot to do with it. Tim Lincecum is just a freak. A guy his size shouldn't be able to throw that hard but he's very explosive and has the genes to do it. Some people just have it.
