@bullet50000 If you had managed to get past the other 4 levels of Anti piracy... 1. Trying to play on a international system. 2. Initial Piracy warning on startup. 3. Enemys in certain areas can be multiplied dramatically. 4. Random errors of checksum that could cause crashes. 5. Finally the last boss, when this error happens, the error triggers what is called a "crowbar" circuit within the cartridge that opens the circuit to the internal battery, thus losing the saved games.

If you imagine the world of EarthBound is 'real' in the sense of it being a self-contained game universe... then Giygas just pulled a Doctor Who and erased Ness' journey from that world's timeline. He erased Ness and everything else from history and undid those events and everything leading to it. To you it's a save game, to them it's a whole lifetime, gone.

Now imagine that in real life. Fridge Horror in 3, 2, 1...

You get through the fact the game already spawns double enemies from an early copy protection measure...now you're finally at the last boss, and it deletes ALL your saves and crashes RIGHT at the end. XD

There's something about jumbled-up video game sound effects that makes me feel so uneasy. Back when I had only a copy of Super Mario World and a SNES, a friend of mine and I were playing through the Forest of Illusions, when all of a sudden, the screen went black, and the intro to Bowser's battle theme started playing out of nowhere (before the initial fight begins). Then it stopped. I had nightmares after that.

@GiygasForPresident At $C3FDC5 is another checksum routine that goes through $C0A11C-$C0A150. This one is called after Pokey turns off the Devil's Machine. If any data in that range has been changed, the checksum fails, the game deletes all your saved games (seriously) and then it crashes/freezes up.
