  • "think of each box being a room, and by practicing this way you break down the walls and get one big hallway"

  • That is one of the best ways to "see" what the teacher mean I have ever seen.Respect.

  • I want to call him Sir...So,Thank you Sir.

  • Hopscotch technique rules. Thx again for teachings us. Sick riffing at the end btw. WOW. XVIII pax never picked up a guitar in their lives. Haha...

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!.I saw this 3.5-4 yrs ago. I knew Pentatonic scale but I used to "get stuck in a box". Now my hand can go back and forth without looking. ( A lot of work I must admit but I am guitar obsessed so the learning process was interesting). You showed me a "door" that took my guitar playing to another level. And I learn new things everyday. I ALWAYS FELT BAD for not coming back to say this. Again , THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • Personally , it is just an awesome new weapon in my warm ups,..... thanks bro !!

  • Which approch is best? Nr 1 or 2?

  • This guy used to be my teacher before he moved from the San Francisco Bay Area. If only I'd been a better student. One of the raddest guys I've ever known.

  • great man ................

  • Capo capo

  • This method seems like it takes a while so I was wondering if I should use a diatonic scale with the practice as the penta is included within it?

  • and this is just the pentatonic scale. imagine the possiblities with other scales? Have mercy! :) Awesome lesson!!!

  • @toml71 I started using this method with the modes calling it "modal hopscotch". Instead of 2 note per string patterns I use 3. It works well to help visualize the fingerboard just as this lesson does. It's a great workout also! Thanks for the lesson Joe!

  • Thank you. This video really open up alot of things for me and got me out of a rut.

  • You should be able to invent excersises like this by yourself, but you'll get that when you stay with your guitar during hours instead watching porn on the net... :( it takes DISCIPLINE

  • yeah i have been doing this for years with just 3 shapes ,

time to learn them all and apply this.

    thanks for the lesson

  • Best. lesson. EVAH!

  • This was by far the most useful lesson I have EVER seen on youtube. The light bulb just went off. I will be practicing the S**T out of this concept. Hopscotch 1 & 2 WOW

  • Great lesson... and you explained it very well.

  • simply the best guitar lesson video on youtube thx !!

  • Great stuff, can you show us the licks and phrases slowed down a bit? You played 'em way too fast, they are great but hard to follow!!

  • i can transcribe them for you, $1.00 /lick

  • @Degascat

just get the pentatonic positions and listen well what he's talking! you can write them down by yourself after

  • iam a beginner and just watching this lesson made me twice as good. i never looked at playing that way! i mix that in with some good riffs and it sounds great thanks a ton!

  • you can get very far with this lesson. it's simple, needs just a few hours of practise from different positions. when i practise this i start from open E, using "hopscotch" in all five shapes. then i go to fret one on E, doing the same and continues up to the 10:th fret and does the same down to open E. if you practise this way, before you start from that fret, say the name of the starting tone. then you practise on what tone to play in also.

  • Thank you very must, this will help me a lot.

  • thank you joe! helped a ton

  • absolutely brilliant lesson. i cannot wait to start practicing this way!

    thank you joe!

  • Awsome! Just what I needed!

    Thanks,

    *hugs Joe Cefalu*

  • Probably one of the most useful lessons on scales so far.Thanx man.

  • I can't wait until the fret board becomes a hallway. Just imagining being able to see the notes in that sense of constant flow is orgasmic.

    Time to practice!

  • Yeah me too lol!

  • DAMN!

  • excelente... tank you...

  • Just bought an electric guitar (played acoustic folk for many years.) Guy who sold me the guitar told me when I said I wanted to play blues, to check out this video. Amazing. So here's where I will start.

  • great lesson! this is what i needed to get out of the "rut" i've found myself in lately. "boxy" is definitely the word i would use to describe the way i've been playing. thanks man! 5*

  • Amazing lesson =D best i have seen so far i think =D very fun to play and so helpfull! 5 stars!

  • JOE you the best......clear understanding and execution of the scale is no doubt the key to success....awesome

  • This is freaking crazy ! wow!

how many hours/days/months/years do one have to practice in order to get to such an amazing level of skill?

I'm practicing this thing for a few hours for a few times per week for the past 2 weeks or so and all i can manage right now is to play the boxes by order. its really difficult to combine them by strings cause when u move out of the box your all pattern is gone and you're left confused :)

    Thanks for the post man!

  • Playing your musical instrument fluently is like speaking another language. How long did you take to learn english? It can take years to speak/play with ease, and have people enjoy what you have to say.

  • thanks for sharing this one..I like it bro..

    ROCK ON!!

  • really like this lesson, it was exactly what i was looking for to think outside the box, pun intended

  • Thnx a lot for this lesson Joe... finally I think I can break free frm the box by box format........

  • never heard of this as "the hopscotch technique", but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, the only problems i have with moving licks around like that is those of which that you need 3+ strings for..., any tips?

  • i love this lesson !! nice nice...it kinda helps =]

  • are you starting on the correct fret for shape #2 the notes not G BbCDF thank you

  • The notes in that position are the same, it just starts on Bb. All the shapes have the same notes but with a different starting point. See?

  • if you wana play in E minor is it just that you just start with the normal pentatonic at E and just continue down ?

  • really, thanks :)

  • Thanks bradda

  • Find Joe's website or search CD Baby for his new release, "Fear Itself". If you like his playing, you'll really enjoy the whole CD...

  • Can hardly hear anything when playing in the end because of the monster delay. Other than that, nice going. Useful to many I'd guess.

  • when i started playing a year ago, i watched this, I understood only the 1st scale. Now when i found this video again, i understood everything, and now I'll practise the hell out of it! Thank you!
