Great video. I noticed you use 5/8 mesh in the salt. Do you think 3/4 is too big for Menhaden? I've been tossing the 5/8 great but want something a bit larger to sink quicker. Just want to make sure it isn't too large. I'm sure it will be fine but wanted your input.
@Jayhova16 GREAT EYE! Yes< that net is a 5/8" a 3/4" is also great. I use both< but when they are schooled up tight, the 5/8" net does not want to rip while pulling up BIG loads of bait._ Thanks, Mike
When you fish for almost 40 days straight, getting down on your knees to wrestle a thrashing chainsaw into a Boga Grip is just not sensible. Especially on 50-100 fish days. A lip gaff is by far the easiest, and in my opinion the fastest and least stressfull on you and the fish. . I have had my share stitches from getting too close to a thrashing Blue fish. Boga Grips are really only good for holding a fish for a picture, and a net is out of the question. Just 1 Bluefish will shred a net.
I @TurboGSR96 I think you need to take another look. We didn't catch a single Striper in this video? I only lip gaff blues. We net or just grab stripers. I do NOT gaff stripers. In fact in the south it is illegal.
You can use pretty much whatever mesh you would like< but the bigger the better for bait this size. If you are planning on netting peanuts< or smaller bait, then the mesh size is very important. A large mesh will sink fast< and parachute less, but smaller bait will ge stuck in the mesh. I use a 3/8 for freshwater,(smaller bait) and a 1/2, or 5/8 for salt. WEST COAST is the best net for the money.
Live Bait, in MY mind is king. However the warm water in July can be tough.(smaller Blues) Stick with the smaller baits if you have a lot of short strikes,-GOOD LUCK!
ok thanks and im pretty excited cause i just got this brand new rod made for big lures and live bait plus it can handle small tuna so i cant wait to go out and use it hahaha
Shad are pretty delicate, but if you have a lot of them, and don't mind changing them out every few minutes, a good spot is right where the tail fin meets the body. It will die MUCH sooner though.
hey i was wondering, are u guys just catching dog fish lately because i have gone out on 2 party boats and have caught didly squat except tons of dog fish. One in ct. and 1 at point judith rhode Island on the night eel trip.
I live down South, and only travel up there a few times a year. When I go in the spring , I stay for 4-5 weeks. I haven't been there lately, so I really can't help. I know the guys up above LI are doing well trolling Daisy Chains and Umbrellas, as well as Mackeral. Mike
Your neck of the woods should be loaded with bait Right Now.They usually show up when the water reaches, and stays in the high 50's low 60"s, but can be the best in the high 60's. The few people I've talked to near you reported tons of bait near the river mouths.
NAH! When the water is calm and warm, you can see the bait up top feeding and sucking the surface for oxygen. If you don't move up fast, they will scatter. Right when I throw the net, you can see another school over my shoulder pretty clearly.(just a darker spot on the water) Thanks for the comment, Mike
hey man i saw your discussion with matthewsanchez and would like to say that it would be awesone if you would make a video on how you repair your cast nets because mine get torn all the time
:O hi im 16 years old and a big fan of casting nets but mine has a hole in it :( not very big lik 3-4 inch wide do u know if it fix ale or do i got to buy a new one ?
Matt, I have to repair mine all the time. I use some 20 lb mono, and just sew it up. It doesn't have to be perfect. I'll get a new one only after I have too many holes to open it right. Mike
HMMM well i can sew mine but do u have any way that u do it. it would be great if in the future u make a video of it i want to go fishing tomarrow but scard it will rip more you got any kind of methods
Matt, I just spread it out on the ground, and line up the torn edges. I take a long peice of 20lb mono, tie it off at the start of the rip, then I sew my way accross the tear, just connecting the edges. Make sure you tie a knot every 2 inches between your sewing line and the torn net. This prevents slipping. Just continue on until you reach the end. It may sound confusing, but once you get started, it will make sense. Let me know if it helps, hows the fishing where you are?
Onen, Yep, They are Bluefish. Most people don't eat the bigger Blues. Believe it or not the small "snapper" or "taylor" Blues aren't that bad when cooked the same day. Thanks for the comment.-Mike
That video is in the New York Harbor in June. The Menhaden(bunker)school up tight then, and you can see them on top. You gotta keep the boat moving, and sling the net before they know you are there.Throw a hook in them and cast.
what size is that net
