You shouldn't buy painted shells for them, the paint is toxic and could kill them if if chips off and they eat it! It could also permeate through the shell wall and "glue" them inside, where they will also die because they can't molt....
This is probably what hermit crabs consider rape...I'm glad I bought one with a natural shell. I still remember my first hermit crab, long ago when selling hermit crabs in painted shells was an uncommon practise. :'(

how cruel... when i got my hermies just awhile ago there were only three , 1 of which had a painted shell and the other try to eat the sand cause there was no food in the foood dish and the last was dead in a corner... i asked if there were more in the back without painted shells and he said those were all he had.. so i took the two remaining as a pity buy.. ;]

It is horrible seeing how crabs are treated in Indonesia. I had read about this stuff but was never sure if I believed it. I'm not a huge fan of painted shells, and my own crabs choose natural shells 80% of the time. Painted shells can be safe, but the ones in this video have paint inside shell and there is no lamination to prevent chipping. Crabs should never be forced to change shells. This is nothing short of animal abuse.
I got one from petsmart that was painted but only bc it was the only one still alive an i wanted to rescue it. petsmart is the absolute worst at caring for hermit crabs.

I buy hermies in painted shells too. But I always have natural shells for them to change into. Sherbert was in her painted shell for a year but changed last night! :) I took the painted shell out. Buddy is still in his shell, though.

How horrible! I don't keep painted shells in my tank. I just adopted a few hermit crabs and they're in painted shells. As soon as they swap shells, those are getting thrown out! I can't believe painted shells get people to buy them. I can't believe people are so stupid to even pay more for crabs with painted shells.
Only buy ones in natural shells and try adopting ones. People get them from the beach and quickly lose interest. Post on your local Craigslist saying that you're looking to adopt crabs. Please don't keep them in wire cages. They need high humidity and warmth and sand to burrow in to molt properly. They also need a salt water bowl as well as fresh water. And they need to be large enough to submerge themselves in.

Actually thats not true...when my dad went to austin he got me a jumbo hermit crab, and he survived the trip, and is now in a new shell ;)

dont give hermies painted shells at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People don't say y but here is why it is bad for them
1.) Hermit crabs are scavengers, and when the paint chips off, they eat it thinking its food and they get lead in them.
2.) This is another reason y paint chipping is bad, when they go to drink it pollutes the water and then other crabs get polluted with the lead. NO PAINTED SHELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAKE IT A LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely terrible what some people have to do to make money.
Remember that you can simply paint your own shells with non toxic paint!!!

i think the shells are very pretty. i know these people really dont know that they are hurting them. they are just trying to make money (i know. still not the way to treat any animal) yes i agree. its messed up. i think they should keep makeing their shells but not forcing the hermit crabs to go in them.. just put nothing but painted shells in the cage so thats what they have to change in. thats what i have done for mine.

I buy hermies in painted shells....
I know it sounds bad but I do it so that the hermies can know a better life then they have known so far my 2 hermies were bought in painted shells and a day or so later they changed into pretty natural shells :) Also Im looking to adopt more i have a 35 gallon tank set up for them and only have 2 right now :)

I buy hermies in painted shells too. But I always have natural shells for them to change into. Sherbert was in her painted shell for a year but changed last night! :) I took the painted shell out. Buddy is still in his shell, though.

Ohh. my...go..d... I just remembered to close my mouth. =O That's HORRIBLE! Some of those wouldn't even FIT!!! It's just a process of them, none of them even seems to know or care how bad it can be.
I do enjoy cute shells. I do not enjoy that video. I wish they would ban this kind of treatment, but somehow find a hermit safe paint so people can get creative at home, with EMPTY shells.

How horrible! I don't keep painted shells in my tank. I just adopted a few hermit crabs and they're in painted shells. As soon as they swap shells, those are getting thrown out! I can't believe painted shells get people to buy them. I can't believe people are so stupid to even pay more for crabs with painted shells.

Only buy ones in natural shells and try adopting ones. People get them from the beach and quickly lose interest. Post on your local Craigslist saying that you're looking to adopt crabs. Please don't keep them in wire cages. They need high humidity and warmth and sand to burrow in to molt properly. They also need a salt water bowl as well as fresh water. And they need to be large enough to submerge themselves in.
