This movies about a disconnect with nature.Miranda "the angel" knew she didn't belong on this earth, in this place So she transformed her self back to the swan A very poetic and deliberetly puzzling film.
This story is about loss of innocence, and a parable about the history of Australia. It's a metaphore of how the English would emigrate to Australia, and the English habits that were beaten into them all their lives were now redundant. They might've been a British colony, but they wanted nothing to do with Engand.
I once ( about 1980 )had a dream with a similar theme music of "Picnic at Hanging Rock" and watched some people walking in a cave but seemed to be traped inside the cave and couldn't find a way out and about a year before - hand ( mid 1979 )I had another dream of the woman who represented miss Mc-craw but I didn't see the film "Picnic at Hanging Rock" until 2003 when I recognised the similar theme music and miss Mc-craw - could be the teacher( represented ) who went missing with the 3 girls...
Parallel universes and time travel are now at the forefront of physics research, so the fact that the girls went into another dimension might not be all that far fetched if you are a theoretical physicist.
Miranda, "knew it all first" but what she knew was... the essence of the film. Unknown beauty, or, surrender to primal beautification. {But more a bewitching beauty.} Every frame is a masterpiece.

This movie was depressing and disturbing, but what I think happened was that hanging Rock is a passage to another dimension and that the girls went through the passage and the passage is one that does not allow you to return once you pass it.
The theory you just described was in "The Secret of Hanging Rock", a previously unpublished chapter of Joan Lindsay's 1967 book "Picnic at Hanging Rock". She took it out at the last minute to make the book appear as a work on non-fiction.
if that is true that they went into another "dimension" then why is there only one girl found and tho the others....why would three of them go through and not all....why was the girl who went back feeling ill and not entranced by the rock as the others seemed to be.
Ms. McCraw chose the 2 girls, Miranda and Marion, who would go with her into the hole in the space/time continuim. Irma eventually decided to go, too, but by the time she had worked up the willingness to go, the hole had closed.
I have the DVD of this movie and from the first time I watched it, (the original film) I have never tired of it. Quite magical, and it scared the life out of the kids at the time! Well done for posting it
Spirit In the sweets ;) thanks

1. As the coach passes through the town, the girls seem out-of-place.
2. In this segment, the girls have hair down, shoeless, hatless, and meander through the rock. But the girl with her hat on holds back, reluctantly.
3. The part where the Englishman and his driver go to look for the girls; he forms a strange bond with the driver, a rough-hewn Aussie.
4. After they find one of the girls, the Englishman says "I was surprised to see young girls allowed to go out unaccompanied.
There are others.
