If we're perma-screwed following a storage strategy we need something to store for 35 years. If it perishes withing a few months it's trash if the SHTF. 1-3 years, I consider short term. If the situation is resolved in that time, it wasn't that bad, IMO. Brown Rice vacuum-packed, stored in 5 gal buckets, in a cool, dark well hidden place, 4 stretching what U hunt & gather, is the way to go. No white rice, wheat, bean or corn. All poisons reducing your survivability. Learn to eat of the land.
I opened a can of peas yesterday dated BBE 2004 and they were fine. The can had rust spots on the outside so I checked the integrity of the can internally before eating. They smelled good, colour was good. Very slightly impaired flavour but definately not "off". Note to self: store cans where the damp will not cause rust.
I don't think I would ever be able to eat anything that was labeled "potted meat." It sounds like pieces and parts of animals. I will starve before I eat that--I opt for dry beans and rice with a little baking soda for a complete protein. I could maybe do the canned ham thing, maybe. But buy a bunch of what you know you won't eat if everything turns out ok, then money wasted. Maybe it is a "girl" thing.
@MsIdontbelieveit in a long term survival situation what would you do..... eat the potted meat or go into the woods to kill and eat a little bunny.....i would probably eat anything as long as i don't have to kill anything
Food saved up is never "wasted money". You can always sell it to someone else or trade it.
Beans, Rice and baking soda may be good for a few days, but I bet after about a week or so eating it every day, that potted meat will begin to sound pretty darn good! :)
You are right. I know that from just being deployed in the Army. It's amazing how good a pop tart can taste when you have been eating MREs for weeks. I'll never forget the heaven a cheese and balony sandwich sent me into after being out there for months. It's relative to what your situation is... I have been storing the mac and cheese that only needs hot water ( cheese pack included) I figure you can you it as designed or use the noodle or cheese sepertely if you want.

Good points. You can take a sharpie and right the expiration date on top of the can (11/14) it helps with rotation. If the beans are coming up on their exp date, make a casserole and freeze it so the food does not go to waste.
