  • 1989 was the very early years of PCs. you couldn't really play on a standard pc of the time. a game capable PC would cost a fortune.

  • Great retrospective :D ....but not really as in depth as i wanted :(

  • I do believe rainbow islands is also on the NES

  • I really love that you're doing this type of retrospective, but you need to do some more research. As other commenters have already pointed out, there's a LOT of incorrect information in your vid.

  • You need to add the TRS-80 Color Computer to that list of ports.

  • hey rainbow islands wasnt first released in 1996 i know cause i owned it for nes and until now i had no idea it was rare

  • I actually grew up on the DOS-version of Bubble Bobble, and on the ancient computer we used it worked just fine, no lag whatsoever. But yeah, the music in that version isn't so hot.

I heard somewhere that in Rainbow Island you play the same main characters as in Bubble Bobble, only reverted back to their original human forms. Also the Atari ST version does have music; it's quite catchy actually.

  • This game is like an upsidedown Snow bros ;D

  • I have Bubble Bobble on my graphing calculator

  • I used to have Parasol Stars on the NES. Never realised until recently it was part of the Bubble Bobble franchise.

  • Awesome video! ThewEMYreview = Quality Reviews

  • This is one of the games I used to own for my Master System back when I was a kid!

I have a lot of great memories playing this game with my sister! Good times!

  • You can say Zee Ex Spectrum if I can say Zed Zed Top.

  • Bit iffy on some of the info jason but still a great vid, i do enjoy a recap and a system comparison. Thanks. ;D

  • "A Really rare game called Rainbow Islands - exclusive to PC DOS, Saturn and Playstation 1".

So it never came out on the Arcade, Commodore 64, Mega Drive, Amstrad, ZX Spectrum, NES, Master System, Game Boy, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Wonder Swan, Game Boy Color or the FM Towns?

it's pronounced: ZED X Spectrum, and rainbow islands DOES have music, it's red book audio so you can't hear it on an emulator.

Come on dude, it's basic knowledge.

  • dope video

  • Interesting piece of trivia. Bob or whatever his name is is also the character on Bust A Move and that series.

Wasn't Bubble Bobble 3 on NES too?

  • wet teenagers

  • Great in depth review Jason! The music in this game is classic!

  • For me, the NES version will always be the best. Great overview Jason

  • Rainbow Islands came out on the Amiga too.

  • WHO ELSE AGREES JASON SHOULD DO A LET'S PLAY!? Maybe BF2 campaign, DNF, Lord of the Rings!? :D

  • Lolz, I paused it right after you said "get your drinks and snacks" to go get a mtn dew code red and bbq chips! JASON IS DA BOSS!

  • superb review, good in depth stuff

  • I own a complete copy of Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 on the Sega Master System.

  • good stuff man

  • So when will you continue your Need for Speed thing?

  • Bubble Bobble was also ported to the Japanese only PC FM Towns Marty, it's a mighty fine version of Bubble Bobble with the ability to play as the girls , they must save Bub and Bob. The game still uses midi despite being on CD, but graphically it is darned near close to the arcade version.

  • Great review bro!

  • You wil really want to watch the bubble bobble video response I posted to this video, I go into great depth about how the cheat codes work for ARCADE version! That's right, the arcade version has cheats u can use on the real hardware!

  • What I don't like about the GBA version is the screen can't show the whole level, so it has to scroll up and down, and also the "new" version has a weird "scaled" look to it. The pixel art isn't 1:1, and I think it looks ugly as a result.

  • I love your review style so much! I am always really excited to see a new video from you in my subscription box. Can't wait for the next one!

  • There's an even RARER NES-only (there's one for the Game Boy, but it's different) sequel called "Bubble Bobble: Part 2", which the cheapest one is currently fetching $48, and some reach up to $150 on good conditions. It's basically Bubble Bobble but revised to use as much of the NES as technically possible, as you have multiple worlds and bosses, and a slight puzzle theme to it, not to mention a far richer color palette and better drawn sprites.

  • @LuwiigiMaster Part 2 was also ported to the gameboy, I don't know how rare that one is, but it does exist because they have made a rom dump out of it. I've played it a bit and from the screenshots of the nes game, I can tell that the game's mechanics are nearly identical to eachother (between the nes and gameboy versions), as the setting is the same. New to part two however is that some enemies take several hits, you can charge up your bubbles and you can float by charging to full power.

  • @shadowmanwkp They're similar, but different games deep down. The Game Boy version isn't as pricey as the NES version, as the NES was obsolete when the SNES rolled around, and not many bothered to buy late NES titles.

  • This was really classic, this is what defines it. Where you sit or stand with your friends.

  • Also Bub is the green dragon and Bob is the blue one :D

  • Great review man :D

With the story of Bubble Bobble, Bub and Bob's girlfriends got kidnapped and got turned into dragons and they had to rescue them.

This is the ONLY game I know of that you can finish with 2 players. If you get to the end of the game it throws you back 40-50 stages to get a friend to help you play and finish it.

Also there is a 3rd Bubble Bobble story game called Parasol Stars where you use umbrellas to pickup and throw objects :)

  • no mention of Parasol Stars? I though that was a Bubble Bobble game....

  • @kingjimmysmit it is, its the 3rd game in the Bubble Bobble story :)

  • play bubble bobble neo for xbla

  • Great review, it's a fantastic game.

  • Tie-Toe

    Tie-Toe

    Tie-Toe

    Not Tay-Toe! LOL

    Great review though. Loved it!

  • I recently played the series for the first time, when I found a copy for the NES. At first I had no idea what to do, but it is excellent once you figure it out. Great retrospective!

  • miss my quarter spending days

  • Just got Rainbow Island for the NES a couple weeks ago. Just as fun as Bubble Bobble but they are both classics!...When i get ritch I am gonna get Bubble Bobble 2 on the NES lol...Great Review!

  • That's what I am talking bout! Two players is where it's at on this game. Can you say Co-op! =)

  • Great review Jason, I wasn't even aware that some of these ports existed for good 'ol Bubble Bobble, though I noticed you did miss one and that was the port to Xbox Live Arcarde, Bubble Bobble Neo. It's a good port, with enhanced visuals and sound and worth the $10 fir a download, at least in my opinion. Great vid though man, keep 'em coming.

  • I used to play this on my calculator in math class during high school!

  • i remember rainbow island on amiga

  • great review jason, always love your stuff keep it up man.

  • I remember playing Rainbow Island's on Commodore 64 - could it be?

  • Very good comparison you did with the different versions of the game. Would you do a video on the Puzzle Bobble Franchise which I believe is a spin-off of Bubble Bobble?

  • 00:47 卐? Anyway nice video Jason!

  • Exclusive to PC, Playstation, and Saturn? thats hardly exclusive is it

  • Dat stanky bass.

  • checkout the xbox live arcade one good stuff

  • That's quite the range of quality for games from the same series. The DOS one looks unplayable.

  • Rainbow island is my one of my fave games of all time! i had it on master system though...might have been a PAL release only on that system. loved this video jason

  • Cool review. You need to play Rainbow Islands some more, as it becomes addictive, and yes as others have indicated it was on more platforms than you stated. Keep the enteraining reviews coming :)

  • Thank you for this review Jay, I absolutely love this series to death. Especially Bust-A-Move!

  • Good to have the classic "Podcast-Style" vids back, they are sweet!

  • Entertaining as always, Jason. Always nice to be able to kick back and relax with one of your videos.

  • great review keep it up

  • Great review! There's also a port made for the iPhone/iPad named Bubble Bobble Double. Also, look for the arcade perfect ports of both Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands found on Taito Legends for both Xbox and PS2

  • Fantastic review man. Can tell you put a lot of work in this review and it shows.

  • That bass is so stanky it needs parachute pants, I miss arcades, dark, dank, smelling of stale cigarette smoke, menthol most of the time, shady characters lurking in the back, spilled soda or slushie stains even though signs clearly marking no beverages, an older guy, lives at home way past it time to move out, There was a sequel to Rainbow Islands called Parasol Stars, It was only Released in North America on the GameBoy

  • stank bass

  • Bubble Bobble games are extremely underrated... I own Rainbow Islands on the NES, that game is my favorite in the series.

  • good vid, but you should research a bit more. rainbow islands was in the master system too. and you could talk about the sequels...

  • stop it with your smooth radio sell-voice and act real and really review and not try to SELL it, and by the way you missed a N.E.S. and PS2 version from the compilations what

  • The rainbows sound like the crickets on Final Fantasy 2, just before Edward has to fight the sea hag and prove to himself he's strong enough to continue despite Anna's death.

  • Jason you should try Rainbow Islands on the NES its challenging but fun. It usually retails for about 20 dollars loose.

  • Great review Mr Heine :D ever figure out what was going on with the DOS port? Perhaps a follow-up video with the Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) franchise? ;)

  • ahh wheres parasol stars?? aka rainbow islands 2 aka bubble bobble 3... and btw rainbow islands had been in the arcades since like 1987

  • i growed up with this game :D when i got dendy

  • Have you played Bubble Bobble Neo on the xbla? it's awsome!

  • Great review!

I suggest to review the "third"* game on the series: Parasol Stars on the Amiga, Atari ST, PC Engine, Game Boy and NES (most of these versions were only released on Europe).

*There is a long and confusing story about the series of games under the franchise "bubble bobble" as seen on the video Chronologically Confused: Bubble Bobble here on the youtube.

  • So many good memories with Bubble Bobble. It is one of my favorite nes games.

  • Nice, you should do Atari Gauntlet series :) Bubble Bobble reminds me of it.

  • There's a really good port for TI-84 calculators.

  • Rainbow Islands was another arcade game just as old as Bubble Bobble. It even had an NES port. How couldn´t you know that? read wikipedia.

  • Another awesome video, as usual xD You should do Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-move too =)

  • Please do more of these franchise reviews as they are my favorite types of reviews

  • typo in description "I take a look at the Bubble Bobble Franchise dating back to 1988!" not meaning to troll just wanted to point it out

  • Great review Jason.

You are the poster boy of less is more in terms of making videos/quality.

  • Rainbow Islands was on the NES also.

  • Loved the GBA version of this game. Though it goes for around $15 at most places unless you can find it for cheap at a pawn shop or Gamestop.

  • Next you should review the Battlefield series.

  • @PloPail Battlefield 1942 F0REVER !!

Still very widely played/supported. Jump back in today bud.

My folder is 40+ gigs. All the modders ? BF1942 is so unique for the time, it still shines. You ain't no C0D, you're EVERYTHING ! Pilot boat tank jeeps APCs, it is an endless game, different battle every time !!!!! Cheers.

  • I remember being in a French hotel with a pretty crappy arcade but then in sed crappy arcade I stumbled upon the original Bubble Bobble arcade machine and spent about 10 euros playing that week lol

  • classic

  • Green one is Bub and the Blue is Bob

  • Please tell me Jason that you have played Bust A Move that is the series I learned about Bub and Bob then I found out about Bubble Bobble
