it's great of him to go with a pixies cover, as they are now a forgotten, unpopular band. the cover he did isn't that great though, but that doesn't really matter. the thought does. I wish more covers for pixies were made.
I don't know what any of you are talking about. This is a pretty decent cover if you ask me. In fact, I prefer their UK Surf version of the song then any other. Sure, the original is great but the song is even better slow and toned down a bit.
beck made the song his own, which is what the best covers are. when i listen to a cover of a song i don't want to hear someone try to sound like the original band, thats just boring. bravo beck, a unique take on a great song
In a sanitized world of over produced crap, it's a good thing we have people like Beck to just enjoy making music... even if he is a bit too well lubricated in this recording.
he never worries about learning the words to covers. at bonnaroo he covered creep and ended it singing with no words. perhaps he was just making fun of radiohead...
No I've heard that version as well- even that one is better than this cover. This one just seems like Beck is trying to act like he's just "jammin'" instead of, you know, performing the song. The original "slow" version has a beat and heart that's missing here.
i love beck as well, and the pixies are without a doubt my number one band, but have you ever heard the 'UK Surf' version of Wave of Mutilation? i think that's the cover he's going for here, and it sounds pretty good, although still not as good as either of the originals

even in covers Beck still manages to add annoying noises to the background.

Eh, overrated Pixies song in my opinion. I prefer No. 13 Baby. But yeah, not the best cover.

it's a little too loose for my tastes, but still worth a listen.

He'll always have a place in my collection.
Nice nod to a great song from the Pixies.

@rorytoomey To be honest, mainstream music is under-produced, if anything. Producers these days, all they have to do, is press a button and voilà!

I love Beck, he's easily one of my favorite music artists, period.
Beck, this cover stinks. It's far too slow, the lyrics are a bit off, and it does no justice to the original song.
I still love you though, and I'll be buying your next album first day, just like I have for your past 4 albums.

maybe you've never heard the slow version by the Pixies? Can be found on the soundtrack to a Christian Slater film called "pump up the volume"
It's the 1st version of the song I ever heard, so that when I heard the regular version, I thought it was way too fast.

Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

People should at least learn the lyrics before attempting to cover a song, especially an awesome song.

I agree, man. It's cool that he tried to put his spin on it, but it didn't work.
