james earl jones version of this is so much more serious...denzel's version is so much more comical. Its amazing how two different actors can completely transform a character with the same lines
Denzel and james earl jones were not competing when playing these parts, if denzell had played this part like mr. Jones did then you'll be complaining about him trying mimick him, he played him his way and if james earl jones had never played the role, denzell's work would be the measuring stick and everyone to come after would not live up to your comparisons...judge it for what it is .. a good play...
Though both of their performances were different; they were both very good. You cannot watch a single scene of a play and try and judge a whole performance. I like Mr. Jones a bit better but Denzel was really very, very good.
Guys, relax. I have seen this production on tape and I actually SAW Denzel on broadway. James Earl Jones was a Titan of a man. He played Troy like A Greek King. Denzel is a completely different actor. It took the audience about twenty minutes to calm down when they saw Denzel. The audiences reaction at this scene was more to his stardom but inappropriate. But trust, was ready to hate on Mr. Washington and his perf. was more down to earth than Mr. Jones. Not better; just different.
I think Denzel is doing his best in a role which he isn't quite right for. I don't think he has the toughness or the depth for Troy, which is probably why he chose a comical angle rather than a serious one. When reading the play, I instantly thought of James Earl Jones as being much closer to Augusts description of Troy - physically big and strong yet with a past of struggle and warmth behind that - qualities i attribute to Earl Jones, and he was utterly convincing, serious and moving as Troy.
I see two different types of fathers although I prefer James Earl Jones choice. Also, I think the director ALLOWED Denzel to play his choice. Perhaps to try to find some humor & irony in this situation. Whether right or wrong; Mr. Jones's choice wasn't a negative one and neither was this. Sometimes, what can happen is a star of Denzel's magnitude comes to a play & instead of directing the star they director stays in awe of the actor & assigns the actor certain magical qualities.
while this is excellent acting...being a father involves way more than just providing the necessities of life. this play seems to be the anti-'death of a salesman'.

@Robstailey he did, it doesn't matter if he likes him. his actions display that he loves him. hes trying to teach him that you shouldn't care whether someone likes you or not, thats not why you do things.
If a kid can't get affection from his own parents where the fuck is he supposed to get it? In fact you owe your kid affection just as much you owe him food and shelter, because for children affection is more important then food!
@Vasileski88 A parents job is to prepare you for life. Also as a parent should always love their child, they dont have to like them. Ax your parents how much their parents liked them?
@Vasileski88 He was teaching the kid a priceless lesson -- namely, not to go through life worrying about whether people 'like' him or not. That's not what life is about. Life is about doing what's right (moral duty, responsibility), damn what people think about it, whether or not they 'like' you for it, etc.
This is what American kids and Canadian kids don't get enough of or not at all. First time I heard a kid talk back to his parents I almost shit my own pants.
Am I the dumbest here and don't understand, why is that old nigga being so harsh. Can't he just say "I love you son"? And what does mean responsibility? For what? For being good cumming in the black bitch huh? A man has to be proud of his flesh and blood not feeling responsible. Its a good act but I rate with a tumb down.
@bucketofnails88 well it is his fault if he didn't raise him in a way that he likes him. The young nigga just wants his daddy's love. What are you all, robots? Like he's something he regrets for and just has to look after. Can't admit that is right.
@dragos7puri He means A&P which is a grocery store. I image the boy was told to go pick up milk or something and instead he decided to have a philosophical discussion with his abusive father ... kids will do anything to get out of a little work.
denzel washington played the father in another production of this and he made the scene funny. it's so interesting to see how each actor interprets it.
I hate how the most likes are about the dialect. James Earl Jones just acted the shit out of this scene and all you "like" about is the fact that he says "axe" instead of "ask?" You're all a bunch of fools.
@1994cecepooh Meh. Denzel's version was rather weak and not true to the time in which the play was written. If you understood the era in which the time of the play took place you would probably have a different view. Denzel is one of my favorite actors but he dropped the ball and got an award anyway for walking through it. Kind of like Sandra Bullock in the Blindside.
@karma312000 oh come one, you can't tell me you didn't feel the passion from denzel. he was alot tougher and with him it felt real but, it your opinion. #respect
@karma312000 I don't think Denzel walked through it at all and Broadway critics are the harshest and would have said so. I feel he wanted to show a different side of Troy, everyone has a different interpretation of text and that was just Denzel's. I actually prefer Denzel's to this because it almost seems he hates the boy but in Denzel's version he sort of yelled with tough love and humor as opposed to Jones scaring the shit out of his son and me too!
