  • I wish he was my dad.

  • I was this production back then. Great.

  • dont you just love the sound of the voice over artist at the beginning. I wonder who it is?

  • We read fences a few years back in high school, this scene totally changed how I saw things.

  • I'm trembling right now.

  • JEJ Is amazing.

  • That's real..

  • Can I... ax you a question?

  • james earl jones version of this is so much more serious...denzel's version is so much more comical. Its amazing how two different actors can completely transform a character with the same lines

  • The day I first saw this clip in my Professional drama class....bricks were shit.

  • @freddykrugersbride *shat aka i was like holy shit.

  • Omg look how young Courtney looks haha! Oh man why am I not in the US to see such diverse plays and different things like this :(

  • Denzel and james earl jones were not competing when playing these parts, if denzell had played this part like mr. Jones did then you'll be complaining about him trying mimick him, he played him his way and if james earl jones had never played the role, denzell's work would be the measuring stick and everyone to come after would not live up to your comparisons...judge it for what it is .. a good play...

  • Though both of their performances were different; they were both very good. You cannot watch a single scene of a play and try and judge a whole performance. I like Mr. Jones a bit better but Denzel was really very, very good.

  • Guys, relax. I have seen this production on tape and I actually SAW Denzel on broadway. James Earl Jones was a Titan of a man. He played Troy like A Greek King. Denzel is a completely different actor. It took the audience about twenty minutes to calm down when they saw Denzel. The audiences reaction at this scene was more to his stardom but inappropriate. But trust, was ready to hate on Mr. Washington and his perf. was more down to earth than Mr. Jones. Not better; just different.

  • can anyone tell me where i can buy this play, if it is published into a video?

  • This english is poor

  • @Reaprar it is a play written in the time period of about 50years ago...that's how they spoke...education was not treated as it is today...

  • @Reaprar It's set about 50 years ago?! Not sure what you expect?!

  • Courtney and James......Awesome!!!

  • I see two different types of fathers although I prefer James Earl Jones choice. Also, I think the director ALLOWED Denzel to play his choice. Perhaps to try to find some humor & irony in this situation. Whether right or wrong; Mr. Jones's choice wasn't a negative one and neither was this. Sometimes, what can happen is a star of Denzel's magnitude comes to a play & instead of directing the star they director stays in awe of the actor & assigns the actor certain magical qualities.

  • while this is excellent acting...being a father involves way more than just providing the necessities of life. this play seems to be the anti-'death of a salesman'.

  • @marshroanoke dude you are dumb that's how the scene is suppose to go!

  • Darth Vader, "you have the nerve to ask....do you like me? What part of the dark side of the force requires me to LIKE You. Now get back to dusting crops before another arm gets 'misplaced'."

  • Like a BAWS!

  • Never thought of reading an August Wilson play but I wanna check him out now.

  • James Earl Jones could care less that 706 people like this video.

  • Comment removed

  • Omg Darth Vader said the n word.

  • this is in all completeness, an amazing 3-minute moment.

ps- if luke would've grown up with his dad, i bet this is what it would be like.

  • 13 PEOPLE HAVE NO GRASP OF WHAT THEY DO

  • Comment removed

  • 13 people are the biggest fools i ever saw

  • Or, you could do your duty by working, and supporting your family, AND tell them you love them.... but whatever.

  • young law and order black guy!

  • Wow...

  • SIMBAAAAAAAAAA

  • I LIKE THIS CLIP...SIR!

  • I go out every morning, and bust my but for them crackers all day long ahahahahahahahaha

  • That was pretty dope.

  • that was great

  • James Earl Jones sure didn't like the people disliking this video

  • Only you could be so bold to axe me a question like that, nigga.

  • Now that's good acting.

  • 2:57 LIKE A BOSS

  • wow, that was amazing

  • Good talk Dad...

  • I've seen his son in a live production of Aida and he was as great as his father

  • James Earl Jones Straight out the Ghetto fuckin darth vader fell on hard times.

  • Wow, he's an awesome actor. It could only get better if he was dressed up like Darth Vader.

  • That was excellent.

  • straight tough love

  • when denzel did it, it was a funny black family.... when James does it, I understnad

  • I just saw the Lion King last night. This is messing with my mind.

  • I have liked you...pray I do not like you further.

  • he never answered his question...

  • @Robstailey he did, it doesn't matter if he likes him. his actions display that he loves him. hes trying to teach him that you shouldn't care whether someone likes you or not, thats not why you do things.

  • @Robstailey What law said I had to answer your question?! Get over here and pick that wood up! lol

  • i find your lack of liking me disturbing

  • Awesome

  • That nigger just called me a cracker! I love James Earl Jones.

  • i feel like i just got repremanded.

  • @vasileski88 I assure you food is more important than affection

  • I'm raging here.

If a kid can't get affection from his own parents where the fuck is he supposed to get it? In fact you owe your kid affection just as much you owe him food and shelter, because for children affection is more important then food!

  • @Vasileski88 A parents job is to prepare you for life. Also as a parent should always love their child, they dont have to like them. Ax your parents how much their parents liked them?

  • @Vasileski88 He was teaching the kid a priceless lesson -- namely, not to go through life worrying about whether people 'like' him or not. That's not what life is about. Life is about doing what's right (moral duty, responsibility), damn what people think about it, whether or not they 'like' you for it, etc.

  • James could crush bears with those arms..

  • @markusrule James could crush bears with his voice.

  • SIMBA

  • This is what American kids and Canadian kids don't get enough of or not at all. First time I heard a kid talk back to his parents I almost shit my own pants.

  • @simonriddick your parents must be your friends first of all, not army sergeants preparing your for the harsh life.

  • @TheMiamiTiger69 That's why the lesson here was that he still loves him even though he was bein a damn fool. :)

  • Am I the dumbest here and don't understand, why is that old nigga being so harsh. Can't he just say "I love you son"? And what does mean responsibility? For what? For being good cumming in the black bitch huh? A man has to be proud of his flesh and blood not feeling responsible. Its a good act but I rate with a tumb down.

  • @TheMiamiTiger69 yes, you are the dumbest here.

  • @bucketofnails88 well it is his fault if he didn't raise him in a way that he likes him. The young nigga just wants his daddy's love. What are you all, robots? Like he's something he regrets for and just has to look after. Can't admit that is right.

  • This shit totally rearranged my brain

  • he wasn't even yelling at me and I feel like shit...

  • @o0converge0o Holy shit, I know that feel.

I felt like I was in a fuck ton of trouble just listening to him.

  • Join me and together we can build this porch!

  • BOSS. NIGGA.

  • holy shit. fuck.

cant. comprehend. that not being real.

    fuck. that is damn amazing

  • wow.

  • Nigga, SIR

  • Best. Actor. Ever.

  • Well I liked this.

  • Totally felt like I was getting yelled at by my own dad. Good job James Earl Jones

  • @DarkHysteria Was there really any need to say that?

  • Makes me question my parents....

  • so many crackers in the audience clapping.

  • holy shit....

  • That A&P better be fully stocked!

  • simply powerful.

  • why didn't my dad ever give me life changing speeches like this? xD

  • @sxyspaz because he likes you lololololololololol

  • Im imagining darth vader talking to luke.

  • YOU SAID YA FINGER WAS A GUN.

  • James Earl Jones looks incredible in this.

  • Live acting is real acting. If you want to see talent go to a theater.

  • King Jaffe Joffer!

  • Press 9 repeatedly too see father/son bonding

  • SIIIIIIIIMMMBA

  • "... now you get the hell outta my face and on down to the hay am pee!" Greatest line ever!

  • @MikeonTU English is not my first language, and I don't know what he means. Would you mind explaining that last line. Thank you.

  • @dragos7puri He means A&P which is a grocery store. I image the boy was told to go pick up milk or something and instead he decided to have a philosophical discussion with his abusive father ... kids will do anything to get out of a little work.

  • @MikeonTU its A&P, not "hay am pee"

  • impressive

  • denzel washington played the father in another production of this and he made the scene funny. it's so interesting to see how each actor interprets it.

  • GOD DAMN. I always thought my dad was such a cruel man when I was a kid. Stuff like this makes me realize how badass he really was.

  • 1:06 DONT YOU EAT ERRYDAY NIGGA 1:38 CRACKAS.

  • I was waiting for him to say " I Am your father..."

  • This is really what happened between Mufasa and Simba. And hence, Simba murdered his punk ass.

  • I hate how the most likes are about the dialect. James Earl Jones just acted the shit out of this scene and all you "like" about is the fact that he says "axe" instead of "ask?" You're all a bunch of fools.

  • @tonycrust Nobody axed you a goddamn thing.

  • @tonycrust isn't it foolish u assume people like this scene cuz they said axe rather than JEJ acted the hell of this scene...smh

  • Black people can do any dam thing a white person can do.. except say the word "ask".

  • uhh this isn't Futurama...

  • Fantastic. A lot better than Denzel.

  • @PortgasDace Agreed! And love most of Denzel's work but James owned him in this version!

  • So does he like him or not?

  • 0 dislikes.... this means something

  • BRILLIANT!!

  • top tier acting

  • Can I ax you a question?

  • @Inimoulleb Lacked you? Who in the hell ever said I got to lack you?

  • @Inimoulleb ax away

  • @Inimoulleb sure "son what is it?" - "can i borrow your ask?.... i need to chop some wood"

  • @Inimoulleb Sounds more like "aksk" actually.

  • @Inimoulleb go matt!

  • he is your father.

  • @DontFearGrim oh christ

  • @DontFearGrim I thought he was Luke's father

  • @5367joemac

    He didn't likes him either...

  • Brilliant performance

  • i perfer denzel sorry

  • @1994cecepooh Meh. Denzel's version was rather weak and not true to the time in which the play was written. If you understood the era in which the time of the play took place you would probably have a different view. Denzel is one of my favorite actors but he dropped the ball and got an award anyway for walking through it. Kind of like Sandra Bullock in the Blindside.

  • @karma312000 oh come one, you can't tell me you didn't feel the passion from denzel. he was alot tougher and with him it felt real but, it your opinion. #respect

  • @karma312000 I don't think Denzel walked through it at all and Broadway critics are the harshest and would have said so. I feel he wanted to show a different side of Troy, everyone has a different interpretation of text and that was just Denzel's. I actually prefer Denzel's to this because it almost seems he hates the boy but in Denzel's version he sort of yelled with tough love and humor as opposed to Jones scaring the shit out of his son and me too!

  • Luke.... I am your father

  • Anybody know when can I see the entire play.

  • That was epic

  • Absolutely Incredible. It brought tears to my eyes

  • I seen this before! I love him so much I l know I'm going to meet him one day I know it! He's an amazing actor :D
