and while kashmiris do have thier own language, the fact is that urdu is the official language of the state. that means urdu is taught in schools, is the main language used to teach students in, and is used in all official state govt business, like filling out forms and things like that. honestly, someone should just hire john zogby to conduct a poll to see if the average kashmiri really wants independence or not.

i agree that a referundum should be held. let me say something, i am a hyderabadi. my state was also invaded by the indian army in 1948. the nizam sent out razakkars to fight the indian army and even filed a complaint with the u.n. too. but we are not a muslim majority in the old hyderabad state. i do support muslims wherever they are, but i still think that it is important that india has at least one state where urdu is the official state language and where muslims are a majority.

well all these langauges are indo-european, including farsi in iran. unlike the southern part of india, which is dravidian based languages. this is the reason behind the civil war in sri lanka in fact and why the tamil seperatists have been waging thier campaign for decades now on that island. but the kashmir conflict is based on religion, not ethnicity. just like why pakistan exists, it is based on religion, a muslim homeland and nothing to do with ethnicity.

kashmiries are different from most pakistanis too, most pakistans are very similar to indians because most of them are punjabi or sindhi, only 25% of pakistanis are pashtuns. Kashmir should be independent from both, they have unique culture and they dont even speak the indic languages, their language group is dardic which is closer to iranian languages.

but i agree with you on one thing, and it is something i have always stated. the only real solution to the conflict is for india and pakistan to each give up thier sides of kashmir to form an independent state, garunteeing full access to water rights. thats what the real fight is all about. both great rivers, the ganges and indus start in the mountains of kashmir, and the reason why both countries have fought over it for sixty years. in this part of the world, water is a lifeline.

nad yet urdu is still the official language of the state, and the only state in india as such. plus, india is multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural. proof of this are the chinese indians in north-east india. they look east asian. in south india, people are blacker than a black man in america. i can say the same thing about afghanistan. there is not one pathan in the northern alliance. let the tajik regions goto tajikstan, uzbek regions to uzbekistan, shia regions of herat to iran.

and again i hail from a hyderabadi family. hyderabad has a very unique Muslim culture not found anywhere in india. we have our own dialect of urdu, that pakistanis often argue is 'not urdu'. we have our own cuisine, our own manner of dress, such as the sherwani, pagaih's, etc. our culture is so unique, you can spot a hyderabadi a mile away. just from speaking to me in urdu, a gujju knew that i was hyderabadi because of the dialect i was using.
