So glad I found this gem! Great performance! I have seen EJ many many times, and I have seen him live during this time period, his voice was great (I mean still is, just in the lower ranges now) I love him, he is brilliant and this is a wonderful video. Thanks so much!
Elton was a brilliant composer who peaked in 1973. Tumbleweed Connection has to be one of the greatest albums ever made. Madman is right there behind it.
I had heard that, in fact, I believe he may have opened for Leon at the Troubadour, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the other link-that was pretty cool, and its nice to see the "early Elton trio" being paid some tribute. 17-11-70-phenomenal stuff!

to: princev11 - for a person born in '93 you have a lot of wisdom -- and to zzzonezz - agreed this kid is right on! as well as loving our ELTON for his amazing talent!
RE: PhenoxRyzing's comment -- I concur! the man is amazing! I was technically trained and could never have this honest, natural talent! Well done Elton !
Elton has a style that you can't be taught. You've got to really love what you're doing to be able to put that kind of emotion into your music, and not have people necessarily view it as emotion. He doesn't play technically perfect, no, but he does have a lot of technical stuff in his music that even the finest classically trained players can't reproduce. Elton is awesome. Always has been, always will be. He'll be a legend long after he is gone.
Elton may not be the most technically proficient or "intellectual" in his playing (ala Keith Jarrett o m G!), but DAYUM, after all the decades have past since he first became my piano-playing mentor that ultimately led to my own current music playing career with a country star, I STILL say that Elton just freakin KICKS BUTT!! He's inCREDibly gifted as a writer, singer, pianist/pounder, of just plain ol, down to earth, in your face gutsy pop/rock. I STILL want to meet you Elton!! (..and go Ray!!)
I think people do realize what an exceptional musician he is. The simple fact that he and his music have survived the "test of time" is a tribute to his true talent!
@xworkerbee "The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them."

That's one of the most effective lyrics Bernie has written for me; 'He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day' - no religious reasons just syllabically it is emotive to sing.
i was born in 1993 & its cool 2 know he was rockin wen i was a lil 1 i was born a puaper 2 a pawn on a cristmas day wen the new york times said god was dead & the war bugun my father has a son 2 day lol=]
I saw him live, and he was frickin' fantastic. He had surgery by way of a dick enema and a dick in his throat is the only thing that has changed his voice. And he may have been pissed that the wind was gonna blow off his rug.
Way to achieve there, kickyerass. Im sure you could be out there solving the worlds problems, but hey...Your only human right? Just as you look in the mirror, if could could even see 180 degrees, you could see 360, if not blinded by the fact...
this show!!!! he later said, im going to do a song from captain fantastic and the brown... called better off dead, which is a good description of this place!!! he was pissed off by the wind
i thought his voice changed because of a surgery =s .. but still i think his voice is amazing on records like The One and Made in England which are from the 90's
Can you give me an example of what you mean, adidas? What do you mean by adlibing any part of any song? Adlibing, in my understanding, is to make something up as you go along...
Some say his voice is better now, others say it was better in'75 when his falsetto had the best tone I've ever seen anyone's have. The only conclusion I can really draw from this is that the man was a good singer 30 years ago, and still is, if in a different way. Although I am only 16, and I have to agree with g2no2000 here in that one shouldn't try to describe something they haven't seen. All I know is that I've heard recordings of his voice then and now, and they both are stunningly beautiful.
Yeah Elton messed up his reallly beautiful voice with years of coke & alchohol addiction, but he has more soul in his singing now compared to then...Once again I was there (backstage) at several Elton shows in the 70's ... and you weren't even born yet!
g2no2000, I've been to a couple of Elton John concerts... and I have concerts of him singing live from the 70s, and have read about many of his concerts that he did. To bare witness to those shows in the 70s would have been a thing I would love to say I saw, but to have so many things written about how good he used to be (ie. the Filmore for example)they could only have been better!
Elton John would only admit to saying he can sing now, because he has no other option! Why would he under mine his own sales potential if he said he isn't as good as he used to be?
The beauty of watching those old concerts and having to see him now allows me to be objective, because I didn't get to see the man that was, but is! I have witnessed the proof contrary to what people think they know and are arguing about...
People, u have got to help me out. I love Elton John and think he is the best ever but I havent heard alot of stuff from him back when he could really shout it. Does anyone have anything from the 70's? thanks and by the way this is my favorite song EVER! p.s. im only 17 so thats y i havent heard alot of the old.
Chelseaboy and the rest, no bloody way! The guy has lost nearly half-his voice without his falsetto and natural range. He was one of the best singers of all time... now he only has half an instrument and kind of "ordinary." You had best go back and listen to the original and check you hearing! His original recordings are unprecedented!!!
theres nothing wrong with my hearing, and, ive heard practically every Elton John song since the Empty Sky album, but, in my own peronal opinon i think that he sounds better now than he did before he lost his falsetto.
How can he sound better, when he sounds "ordinary!" I hate to say it, he's become a commercial sellout vying for trendy pop-songs that are, what I class, as "bi-ballads." Years ago Taupin even said, "I'll never use the word "love" in a love song, and what does he do - "I Need Love," and "I Love the Way You Look Tonight." I refuse to buy his recent albums.
You hear this version, compared to early versions of him singing the same song, there's absolutely no comparison! If you listened to them already, chelseaboy, you better get your hearing checked...
yes i have listened to them, but, i dont need to get my hearing checked. It is my personal preference and your preference is different to mine. and just in case you wasnt aware, its 'I Want Love' and 'Something About The Way You Look Tonight'
Take away half the keys on a piano, and what do you have? Half an instrument! Elton is half the instrument he used to be. As someone who appreciates singers, I would aspire to sound like the old Elton as he was unique, and distinct! Those people who prefer the 'new' Elton is becasue they can actually sing in key with him. Musicologists would refute what you are saying to the dieing breath!
I prefer the 'new' Elton because I think in my opinion his voice is better, not because i can sing in key with him, because quite frankly i cant sing in key woth anyone, im tone deaf. Im not saying i dislike Eltons earlier voice because thats far from the truth, ive never heard him sing badly but i just prefer the way he sings now.
All of his songs are memorable to me. Without blowing my own trumpet i know the lyrics to practically all of his songs (apart from songs on albums like Leather Jackets or Victim of Love, awful albums quite honestly). If you were a real fan you wouldnt make trivial mistakes like that!
utter tosh, he has a far more distinct and powerful voice now than he ever did!! when he was younger he was not a great singer, he himself has admitted this, he was a piano player who found that he had to sing to get his songs recorded and slowly his voice developed!! he sang far too high when he was younger which is what did his throat in!! as both a piano player and a singer he is at his peak now!! its not about how high its the quality!!
