Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I went natural a few months. I love my natural hair and I'm learning a lot about it. I was hesitant to go natural because I thought it would be very difficult to take care of my hair. I've learned how to maintain, manage, and keep my hair healthy. It takes time but I think it's worth. I get frustrated when people don't want to take the time to care for their hair. If your hair is important to you than you should take the time to care for it properly.
I understand what you are saying because growing up in my younger years i was the only girl in my family with long hair and people used to compliment all the time saying your hair is so long or you got pretty indian hair and it made my cousins jealous because people would ignore them but i didnt let it go to my head because we are all the same to God eyes and i would tell my cousins dont worry about it they hair is very pretty everybody is BEAUTIFUL to god's eyes we all are made from the creater
I see it as this...we can't control what other people do with their hair. All we can do is inspire and be an example for those who are willing to make the change. My mom also permed my hair at a young age, and I've had only 2 weaves. No one in my family has natural hair. I'm 19 now, and I'm finally learning what I think is best for me. Maybe those young girls will grow up and realize what's more healthy for them physically and mentally. Now society is a whole diff. subject.
as a person of asian decent i still have the same desire--PIN STRAIGHT HAIR--and im a guy...i have naturally straight hair but at the ends theyre bushy and weird so even though i dont have kinky hair i still want to get a perm and have it all straightened out...i believe its more of the control you have on straight hair vs the chaos of maintaining kinky locks rather than the "beauty" you achieve...because beauty is supposed to be effortless and with straight hair you dont do much to maintain it.
@leelahutt1 It takes a lot of effort and time for black women to style their hair and its not as simple as whipping around a blow dryer or a curling iron. Its a COMMITMENT, so its not just a woman going on a whim, it takes a lot of thought and dedication, and MONEY...
I appreciate your video. And you know what makes me upset is when people would say that I would have good hair. And then I would tell them they had good hair because ALL hair is good hair. But people couldn't take the compliment. That was when my hair was relaxed and when I had long locs. I just recently did the big chop and cut my locs off. And now peeps are acting like they think I have bad short hair now. How bogus... I feel liberated to rock my fro now.
even with three hair (which is what i have) i get looked down upon and ppl dont like my hair and then again i get alot of compliments sometimes i get ppl who insult me without even trying saying that i have good hair and i correct them becuase it has to start somewhere.
i love all types of hair. i have 3a hair and some 2 hair. I not mixed and its very annoying when ppl say u have good hair or you think ur pretty bcuz you have good hair or is that a perm. There are ppl in the black community that actually dnt belive my hair is like this. I feel that girl black girls are HOPELESS unless the media, society, and the ppl closess to them dnt change and start excepting themselves. I have been trying to convince my sister to go natural but she wont budge. its just sad
I definitely agree with her but we must consider the fact that natural hair are hard to look after whether it is beautiful or not. Not every single black women wants to deny their origins but straight hair are more practical...
Ok so I have a question. If straight hair is said to be trying to make hair more Euro or Asian like (which I don't really agree with) then what's the diffrence in using moisturizing products? That's no more natural than straighten it.
regina, well, moisturizing is essential for HEALTHY HAIR...moisture won't permanently change the texture of your hair..it just strengthens it. It's just like taking vitamins and such. Furthermore, one can moisturize their hair with natural oils (in conjunction with water) ie. olive oil, avocado, omega 3's, etc...moisture is essential for hair just as it is for skin and proper organ function.
Uhm, moisture doesnt do anything to your hair. It just makes hair healthy. Chemicals permanently change your hair, where as moisture doesnt change your hair permanently.
I am an African American girl with natural hair, and I've been curious about how a relaxer would affect my hair. However, I decided to stay natural. Your video influenced me a great deal because I'm doing a science report on the strength of hair. And this video gave me more insight on hair in general and how the media has had an impact on how we sometimes negatively view our hair. So thanks a lot for that.=)
Yo AllyceHudson get a life because not all african americans have kinky nappy hair i am an african american and i have nice soft wavy/straitish hair and i don't need to straighten it or put braids in it<3 so yeah
I LOVE my NATURAL HAIR no matter how hard it can be 2 manage sometimes. I'm 19 and I love my hair more than ever. Everyone always said when she starts high school she's gonna relax her hair now I'm a college freshman and my hair is still not relaxed and it will never be relaxed. I like the attention I get when people on the streets compliment me on my hair and telll me how long it is.
I think their is a problem with almost all women hating their natural hair. If it's curly some want it strait, if it is strait some want loose curls. For me, I never understood good hair and bad hair especially in the black community. I think those tight curls are beautiful. There is no good or bad natural hair. We only need to learn how to take care of the wonderful hair God gave each one of us.
I got a relaxer when I was 5. My hair had tight curls that would spring back if you combed them and it was much like the Mowry twins. I hated it! Not because I thought it was ugly, but because my mama couldn't comb hair and she pulled my hair like crazy when it got tangled. I was happy that my hair was straightened after I got a perm because it was easier when she combed it, BUT she didn't take care of it right and it broke off quickly. NOW I am trying to go natural. Permed hair is overrated.
Well, I do understand why some people don't really want to walk around with their natural hair, but I think it's ridiculous when they walk around with weave down to their arse. I have curly hair, so I don't really have a problem with my hair. I love it like it is, but I don't know if I would have if it was kinky because I don't have kinky hair.
I het nothing but compliments on my natural kinky, lumpy, curly style...from males and females. so-called Asians, Latinos, Black people and white people. I have men hit on me every day and I have never had a problem getting a job. Everyone can spot genuine self-acceptance. But the fake, "I should but don't really" thing will never get rave reviews. I exercise regularly to keep my sexuality and heath from degrading...and never worry about water of any kind (perspiration included) .
i think tempest bledsoe would be a better example, she wore several natural styles during the show. it's also very interesting that all the stars you showed for blk beauty examples were all light skinned, light eyed or both--which is another issue esp for black women. while black men get the adoration from women of all colors no matter what shade they come in nowadays, black women still are not considered cute unless they are light skinned, long haired, or light eyes--more cream in the coffee
I am soo glad you showed the mowry twins!! b/c it's interesting that when their show 1st came out their hair was curly silky & long, however i remember ppl thinking they were ugly which was odd b/c light skin & mixed in the 90s automatically meant you were cute. then when they straightened their hair every one was like 'they're sooo cute." even then as a 12 y/o i was saying all they did was straighten their hair. tatyana ali and chili are both mixed. rudy's hair was natural, but it was also long
girl I remember that too all the guys in jr.high were like, their ugly they look like mop tops lol, but once we got to high school and they straightened their hair on the show, girl everyone was jocking the twins, girls included lol.
i agree with you rudy got a pass cus her hair was exceptionally long for a black girl with 4b natural hair.
i really like ,what you said , i definately believe it, i am natural and i believe more black women should do that ,relaxers are dangerous, y so many chemicals , all that is cancer we trying to attract to our selves , black is beautiful and we should honor it .
One thing i loved about jazz violinist miri ben ari, who's from Israel, was that she never relaxed or straightened her hair. She appears to have a interesting, natural 'fro going on that's a mix of browns and blonds and golds that she's kept when she's casual AND when she is performing. When i was small a lot of my jewish friends all had poofy, full and even nappy hair, but the look soon disappeared when they hit their tweens. It's a pity, since kinky hair is lovely. : (
good post. as mum of a boy. the only way to help our kids through the difficult stage of them wanting to be part of the majority (white) is to be honest about race politics. I showed my 7 year that episode & other films with children who don't love their skin and hair. It has transformed my son. I agree with you that we have to live what we say. I went natural when I was pregnant & have been locked since he was 2 years old & I'm so happy. he's growing his hair now & wants an afro!
I like this Video. I am a full European, but i am eastern European. And i take care of my hair but i still have really curly hair to the point were it gets nappy. Especially at the back of my head. So European hair is not that good of hair. Well eastern European hair anyway. The Indians have it all.
I have a question, when girls are little is their already long like rudy's at 03:12 because if thats how their hair is then why do they need it relaxed?
i know alot of women that relax their kids hair. i dont think its ok..and if other girls in the media had nice texture hair..its nothing wrong with it. we cant control whats on tv. it starts at home..tyra is wearing her regular hair now. tyra kept it real and told the women what hair type she has. like tyra said you have choices. do what makes you happy but mom's should teach their daughters how to do their own hair and love themseleves.
Well, and thoughtfully said (even though didn't need 13.5 mins). When I was growing up, curly or straight hair was always referred to as "good hair", and mother's bragged about their kids "good hair" as if they had done something special to deserve it. Any child of the family who did not have "good hair" (opp. kinky) was inadvertently made to feel inferior. I wish no young girl ever had to grow up with that feeling of inferiorly imposed at such a young age.
just to let you know that was a back handed ass comment, if you had an issue the with length, then you didn't need to take 13mins out of your life to watch the video.
I totally agree with you im dominican and we also have very mix type of hair but we are told since lit. how to take care of our hair it's a lack of knowing exactly how to style and care your natural hair in a natural state.
Getting a perm was the best thing that ever happened to me. I perm my hair every 6 weeks with regular conditioning in between. My hair is long and beautiful now. Just because some women prefer relaxed hair doesnt mean we hate ourselves. I like the look.
I have to point out a contradiction in your post. You said "just because some women prefer relaxed hair doesn't mean we hate ourselves" and just before that said "my hair is long and beautiful *now.*" Your natural hair is beautiful. Though I'm sure you are a proud black woman, that is a form of self-hatred. I've been there.
see that is what gets me, why when this debate comes up we always fall on the 'hating ourselves' & 'wanting to be white' mantra? that may have been the case in the 40s but i relax my hair for neither reason. It's EASY!! once every 8 wks i use the mild relaxer. i didn't get perms til i was 12 so i remember the HOURS of work i had to put into my hair. not only that, but i can fro out my relaxed hair & i rock that look too.
I get tired of ppl thinking b/c I straighten my hair I hate myself. I actually had natural hair for a long time (longer than all of my friends) but I never left the house w/it natural--always straightened. It was the trend when I got a perm the natural look was not in at all. We could use the 'wanna be white' excuse but considering that white ppl w/naturally curly hair hate their hair too usually, we as women could point to the feminine ideal that men want a woman w/long, flowing, straight hair.
you never left home without your hair straightened- even when you wore it natural? but you have NO shame in your natural hair, even though you obviously saw it unfit to wear outside, where perhaps, other people may see it? how could you NOT see that as anything other than SHAME OF SELF? lol!!!
i think when we "relax" kids hair,,, its kinda strips their identity before its even formed well. and thats why this cycle continues. I remember when i was younger and wanted it done and my mother said no. I did it on my own at the age of 21 kept it for 2 years and now i am one year into being natural again.. i feel relived and lighter and more like myself again. this is my personal take on it. but i guess for others it differs
But I truly believe that many black women look absolutely stunning when they leave their hair natural. I think the reason why they don't is for two very distinct reasons. A) They are underrepresented in the media, just as you pointed out. B) I think it's also a lack of knowing exactly how to style and care for their hair in a natural state. If you have been having your hair relaxed/permed since childhood, then you haven't been taught how to care for it, or even how to style it.
u r beautiful my sister. i can't think without my kink and i have learned to be happy with my nappy. i am from a civil rights family and the hot comb was most common. i am 35 and understand the delemna... i think wigs are cool, though :) oh yeah, and i shave my head bald because i am pretty like that. lol
I am a hispanic guy with longer hair. Most of my friends were black girls who were obsessed with my hair. Even to this day I am always approached by black women who always comment and fawn over my hair.
Mylie Cyrus (aka Hannah Montanna) has extensions in her natural hair. It affects both black and white women. I have a lot of black friends who do a lot with their hair (braids and weaves). I guess its the opposite direction for me, as a white woman, because I really love the freedom my black friends have to change their look.
I have thin hair and it doesn't look very good long. I got tracks sewn in because I wanted my hair to be long & thick. As a little girl, I made the comment "Molly gots bi
ggy hair and I gots none" about another girl with thick, long hair. I guess we all notice our hair (or lack there of) no matter what nationality.
Anyway, I know it's not the same, but the result is the same-glue, sew, straighten, curl, dye... the list goes on and on. Maybe I'm weird as a white girl who gets weave, but like my friend said to a guy who said "Why is she getting tracks? Isn't she white?"
"She can do it if she wants to. Just like us she wants her hair to look different and cute."
Hey. love. Priscilla Presley wore weaves. I remember the infomercial she hosted a while back showing her actually putting in locks of hair on her head. She had a guest on who did the same and it looked so natural. I was floored because I didn't think white women did this. And I'm finding out that more and more women of other races are doing the same. The only ones I haven't heard of doing it are Asian women and there might be theory behind that. Even so, it doesn't mean that weaves look bad. . .
Asian women def. but weaves in their hair. I went to multicultural highschool and had friends who would go home to china and get the lastest weave/track whatever. But they do put pieces in their hair as well.
I have had very long thick hair my entire life and I was made fun of by white people because it was curly and black people made fun of me....not really sure why...plus I'm dark skin and mix..so you really cant win....unless you are rich and famous...
you know eveytime i was made fun of because iof my hair it was by a black women or latino women, i dont get why we down our own people. also i think we cant blame the african american girls we see on tv, there just doing what we all do, they are tryinng to be accepted.
people are stuck on that Willie Lynch mentality thank god i never grew up with that.
Me really i don't mind weaves/wigs as a PROTECTIVE STYLE i worn straight ones and afro textured hair like erykah badu has. With all the info out there you think people would get it i do have long and as a child.
I also don't agree with relaxing children's hair my first relaxer was when i was 13 at 16 got bored and went back to natural I see some half bald kids.
its just sad black people think or wish to have hair other than there own what they (we) dont know is we no matter how kinky or nappy or straight our hair we do have the best hair! we can do so much more!
we can have it afro, straight, curly, wavey, long, short (ect). just be proud to have what you have!
I have read some interesting posts and allow me to respond to cvzdez racism is about believing that humanity is divided into "races" supposedly genealogical groups, who you date is more about preference and conditioning, yes even racist conditioning.
As for black men and hair, again preference kind of like women and size (if you catch my drift). Most of us careless about what's on your head than what else you bring to the table anyway.
Get 2 know JESUS, he's totally blind to whats outside of u and has perfect 20/20 vision to whats inside of you. So, 2 the girl who made this video, you quite attractive !!!
please dont come on here with ur negativity. You don't really know what you're talking about. I wear braids all the time and my hair is natural. You should really think about what you're saying before you say it. Seriously
Unforunately this is not goig to end soon. It took us years and years to "accept" black baby dolls and even those come with sleek hair!!! How dumb is that??
There are some very beautiful black women out there who wear their natural hair so pretty but no one seems to notice (India Irie, Gill Scott...)
It's something we have to educate in ourselves and our children. Not only girls, boys too 'cos they grow up hating kinky hair!
Your mom is correct. Helix-Hair (nappy) defies gravity. The desire to emulate that power is what iis at the bottom of all of that "product" on the shelves that other people use to make their hair stand up. It is the marker of original man/woman.
I have worn my hair in some variety of its completely natural state for over 25 years. At first, only white males would date me. But, I soon found that even black males who THOUGHT they preferred females with un-kinky hair fell to my spell of genuine self-love. It is absolutely necessary to erotic appeal and intimacy.
Did you hear that Tyra is going to be starting wearing her natural hair on September 8, 2009 and is using this as her season premiere? She says she wants to encourage people to "rock their natural beauty". What do you think? I wonder if she peeped out some of the negative statements about her good hair vs bad hair show and how she appeared hypocritical. This is interesting. I hope she pays credit to the women who have rocked their natural beauty b4 her as well.
I love Tyra and agree that sometimes she goes over the top. But she has never denied to wearing wigs and pieces!!! Ever seem Beyoncé's natural??? Why??
Hair pieces are now fashion acessories and should be worn as such, not to substitute your real hair which one should be proud of!
We have to start looking at ourselves on a real mirror, not other people mirrors, if you get what I mean.
mane i went to the salon and these girls relaxe my hair when my mom told them not to and when i went back to school in the 6th grade i was BLARELY HAIR LEFT BUT MY HAIR TOUCHS MY BACK NOW 3years ago
The Spanish kidnapped West African people and raped them alot plus a small amount of the indigenous people Taino (basically like Native Americans)
mixed together
Some lok more African
some look more European
they arent some separate race of people
they speak Spainish cos Spain owned that island Dominican Republic was only created to make Spanish people richer to put slaves there and to work them till they died.
I agree Applebaum to take it further their is only one race the human race, every thing else is your nationally. Spanish is Moor Latin and their was black people in America before Europe came here.
The native Americans where a mix people of Moors and Asians or the combination call Asiatic . Black, and Negro are not races nor nationalities. I ask all people that have Melonie in their body to stop calling themselves and research their full history of both the Americans and Alkebulan (the real name of Africa).
you are right, about alot of things u stated in this vid! and also, if you pay close attention , there are some black sororities that seem to only have members that have lighter complexions and/or long , permed hair. also, our black men really dont support our natural hair, they dont support us with that, because while they dont wanna hurt there woman's feelings, they too are wishing there woman would have straight or weaved hair, the majority!
Yeah, I agree with you about the black men. I believe they go for everyone but us because they don't love themselves and want their children to have the straight hair. They go for the latinas, whites, asians, and native americans before they will touch us. Sad, but true. Okay, I will be fair, most of them.
what is wrong with going outside of your race?? that's the problem with most black women they think just because a black man wants to date a white woman or a hispanic woman they MUST hate black women. that's just ignorant.
Wow your wisdom is great and I remember looking up to these same tv characters as women I wanted to look like. I have been natural for almost 3 yrs now and I used to wish that I had never got a perm at 5 yrs old from my mother but now after all the problems other young girls are facing I'm glad that I went through it and came out with knowledge on how beautiful I am just being myself and I never thought that people would compliment me as much as they did. Job well done on this video.
This 'good hair' syndrome gets to me as well. It is the reason I started locking my hair back in the late 80s'. I went from getting so many negative comments to very positive ones. As we continue to evolve and rise again like the Phoenix, sisters like you and I have to lead by example. I feel I have influenced lots of women to go natural over the years.
I understand what you are implying, but there are more important issues in this world besides good hair vs bad hair.. Sorry but even obama said, "stop crying and move forward".
you just made me think and wonder why my mother did that to me and my older sisters. we were permed young. I cant tell you how many times I have watched my hair fall out and me get another perm because I had "figured it out" and "this time it wont fall out" never realized that I was brainwashed until recently. I had hair down my back not a year ago...ALL NATURAL and I permed it. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. my husband likes it permed but I gotta do me. going on 4 months transitioning & so happy!!
I'm glad your happy:) I made the same mistake last year also. 3" from waist hair and all of it relaxed or "trained" straight even in water & I used to be just in ecstasy about that. Thought I had "figured it out" also. Thought I was loving myself more and more finally. Come to find out watching utube that I was living a brainwashed lie. Now I am 5mths nappy & loving it.
I was watching Sister,Sister marathon a t.v show dat came on B.E.T yesterday. I was watchin da episode when Lisa took her and her twin sister 2 da Beauty shop or spa. Tamera got her hair straightened looking like da europian type of hair and these girls started hangin out wit her cause of it and she ditched Tia. Tia was in the room tryin to do a perm and it messed up and she had a big puffy afro and Lisa told her that she could wear a hat 2 skool and Roger took it off n everybody saw.
This is a great video. You shared some things I never thought of like how the media only shows black children with long, silky hair. I went natural and took my children natural, and my family seems to be very unsupportive. It's the brain washing of a people, and we parents perpetuate it. I feel its time to stop the cycle. Thats why I'm going natural with my children !
yup i seen that episode of the Tyra show, and i thought it was so funny how when Tyra talks about hair on her show she always has a braid or a kinky wavy lace front who is she fooling. the next day she rocking her blond straight hair.
anyways i think your a good speaker i enjoyed your video.
STOP HATIN ON TYRA DAMN. the moral of her ENTIRE SHOW ABOUT "GOOD HAIR" is that there is no such thing.THAT ANY TYPE OR TEXTURE IS GOOD. that is what she was trying to say. And anywho, she never said, OH YOU CANT WEAR WEAVES OR RELAX YOUR HAIR. she never said that. SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY HATE THEIR HAIR AND TRY TO RELAX IT AWAY OR HIDE IT BEHIND WEAVES. if you can rock natural, relaxed, or weaves its YOUR PRORAGATIVE. dont hate because she is great.
STFU who is hating on tyra? she is the bomb, she has done many great things in her career, but her ass needs to keep it real and not rock braids for one day, when 24/7 she rocks lacefronts! since the show i have yet to see her rocking braids=D so that proved my point!
this video was more about the mom's and daughters and not necessarily about tyra, so get it right before you come on here with your bullshit and negativity.
ya'll yt chicks kill me, so now i'm a hater lmao thanx for the revenue=D
This video made me subscribe to you. I'm so proud that you expressed the issue so well. No one really talks about "good hair," and although it's a touchy subject, I was glad to see Tyra tackle it. My family upholds the idea of "good hair," and they were appalled when I mentioned to them that I might go natural. I'm currently on the fence with my decision, mainly because I would hate for my family to be ashamed of me.
I think I've been thru the same. 5mths natural now & I have 4 hair. So my family sees me, but I notice they keep not looking at me, relatives, grandmother and all. I was like, is this bc I went natural? Or is something else going on? But I find that their shame, shames me if this is why. I am understanding. I feel that their memories of bad treatment in this country r why. But I also find that my new self-luv & vanity, lol, make me not care. HTH
thank you.... thank you for making this video... i just recently had my bf buzz me down to like 1 inch last mont because i wanted to be natural... and guess what he still thinks i'm beautiful as a natural hair wearer as i did when i was a relaxed hair wearer.. this is an important message that i am glad you helped get out!!!
Thanks for the video! I get the most negative comments from black people about my hair- other races love it. I am sure we all remember how long, healthy our hair was as children, and yet we believe the lie that chemicals are the way to go. Im becoming defiant about my hair(smile) I REFUSE to relax my beautiful healthy natural black hair. Other races are able to go natural and there is no issue. Pretty sad.
A good point you mentioned was the fact that there's barely any girls/women in the media with kinky hair. Who are the girls supposed to look up to? Even their mothers wear perms or weaves. =(
good hair is hair that GROWS! if your hair is growing it is GOOD HAIR no matter what the texture is. God didn't make any mistakes when he made our hair. it just up to us on how we wear, style it, fix it, treat or care for it.
mya32189-If you eat healthy your hair will grow. I know that eating food with vitamins will grow your hair. Also eating nuts to keep your roots moist. Hair products are what we use to give our hair a certain look. Healthy eating is what actually grows your hair. Also trimming your ends when necessary.
Have you seen the very beginning of her shows before it actually begins Tyra has shown her in many different stages, with hair without hair with makeup and without makeup. Her crew (black I might add) do her weaves and TOO much makeup. Off the set she admits she just likes to be free of all the extra makeup and hair hype.
i feel you, but kids don't see her off set, little girls see her on tv, full of make up and weave, if her "black" crew is piling make up and weave on her, then that is her fault, she is the executive producer, so what ever she says go's and she can put a stop to it. i love tyra but i'm just keeping it real, i wear wigs and don't make excuses for it, it is what it is.
if she likes her wigs, then she should rock them, but don't switch to braids for this particular show that was very fake.
Thanks for passing the videos along to me. I see totally see your point. Someone sent me a photo of a little black boy touching President Obama's hair. Unfortunately, good hair/bad hair is still a topic of discussion. Healthy hair is good hair. Thanks for your comment.
Amen, my sister. I didn't get a relaxer until I was 17 years old! My mother made sure I could take care of it before I got one. 13 years later I have gone natural. I am the mother of two daughters. My oldest daughter has a tighter curl pattern (4b) and my younger daughter has a slightly looser one. We are making it a point to teach our girls to embrace their natural beauty and enjoy their hair texture. We can take the time to learn about natural hair care just like we do relaxed haircare.
I totally feel you! I am adopted and my mom is white and my dad is hispanic. My mom has always loved my hair no matter what. As I child I cried a lot because I got made fun of. I once had a little boy tell me to go back to Nigeria because I was a ni**er. I was hurt and my dad told me that I wasn't black but brown. I have had a lot of trials as a child all I wanted was to be white or mexican because it was what I say all the time :(.
I saw the show right after I saw you post. To see those little girls haiting their came from their mothers. They should be ashamed of themselves. Especially the little girl who had the extremely long hair. She was begging her mother to cut her hair so she wouldn't get tease or have her hair pulled.
The solution to that was to report the matter to the school instead of letting her little girl suffer like that. What is wrong with people these days.....WAKE UP!
i seen the vid n that is sad my mother is that way she thinks good hair is long and wavy and curly but i dnt believe that i believe good hair is natural my mom wants me to get a perm and like its hard because she dont support my natural journey
Hair is Hair. At the same time I feel like there shouldnt be a certain hairstyle to represent us all. I like to express my individuality as a person. I think that Lauryn Hill shoulnt be the standard of beauty and its not quite beyonce either. I just wash my hair and take care of it like im suppose to. Tribes in Africa even have different hair style standards and standards of beauty. Were do you find people like that? Come on. Not a dam thing was wrong with those kids, but there tonta parents.
omg girl when i watched that i was sooooo disgusted especially with the lady that put a relaxer in her 3yo head...and that little girl with that long hair was sooo cute with her cute little voice...but i am so glad tyra did that show
Why hate on the little girl who wants blonde hair? TYRA wears blond hair. Therefore, the little girl DID NOT get this idea from a white girl, she got it from TYRA, BEYONCE, MARY J. BLIGE, T-BOZ, and so many others that wear blonde hair.
who's hating on the little girl? and before u write a smart comment talking about all I like to do is wear is straight hair, trick I suggest you watch more of my vid, I rock my hair straight, curly, natural, crazy, what ever,
I never said that I wasn't contributing to the problem by wearing weaves,
but I'm not going to sit here like tyra and act like I'm not guilty of perpetuating these images so check ya self!
There's also the ruler test. There was a time when your hair had to be as straight as a ruler for you to be accepted into black high society or into traditionally black colleges.
It's true. There's a book called Our Kind of People: Inside Americas Black Upper Class. The book really gets into the brown paper bag test and the ruler test. Light skinned blacks with "good" hair only socialized with and married their own kind.
OMG thANK YOU!I am light skinned, and I have thick thick thick thick thick poofy and wavy hair and I am transistioning as you know.People say I have an asian/indian/type-Samoan hair type and i have long godo hair..it really needs to stop..because no matter how light we are, whites will consider us as dark skinned, standing next to them!It really is sad because I had friends that got called names because their dark pretty choclate. Good hair is healthy hair, when will they not realize that?!
im black indian and hawaiian i hate when people say (black girls, boys) lalala oh you have that really "good hair" i think its very ignorant i hate that
I had an AA stylist flat out refuse to press my thick hair but would do a blowdry for my mom's so-called "good" hair. It's total insanity.
I'm shocked at the early age of the relaxers...I had to beg & plead for one in 9th grade...of course my hair was downhill after that until going natural years later.
I just received the 'OMG look at how much hair she has" and the total look of shocked beyond belief. And then while they're doing it, trying to talk me in to getting a relaxer.
I'm so glad I have found a stylist who is all about natural healthy hair, and is in no way, shape or form, trying to force me in to putting chemicals on to my hair.
I saw that show too and it was very sad. Though it was sad what the little girls said, I was more upset and saddened about the parents role. Low self-esteem is passed down from parents who never accepted themselves. There should be a rule against stupid parents that procreate low self esteem. SAD!!!!
You are telling the truth. I mean, I use to be the one that use to say that I wish I had a better grade of hair. I do think it is because of how we grew up and the importance of hair grade. We have to realize that we need to grow out of this and accept being us. No matter what grade of hair you have you have accept it. Like my mother use to tell me. Hair doesn't make the person. You make you; not what you have on your head. It is in your head. Thanks for the topic.
I wasn't shocked with that show either, but I do believe that black women trip off of hair type more then black men. When I was growing up in the Bay Area, there were sistas with, nappy, damaged, and short hair, and they were still pullin the black men.
I think it's very sad and i feel like it's the mother's fault yes society plays a role in it but teaching starts at home when i saw the show i was like wtf is good hair?? i'm a hairstylist use to do chemically processed hair you cant pay me to do it now natural hair is so much better to work with in my opinion and the mother who had a child out of her race so her child would not have kinky hair is down right ridiculous because her hair still looked kinky to me smh
What you're saying about these salons' reactions to our natural hair is soo true. I remember when I went to the hair salon get a weave last year. When I took off my hat, the stylist looked at my hair & then said to the stylist, "Oh, she has natural hair." To me, that was like, yes, I have natural hair. And??? It's just sad that they don't know how to work w/ their own hair. What you said is true: my hair IS your hair. That's why I do my own hair.
The woman didnt want to weave it so she told another lady to do it. The jamaican woman that did do it....said to her friend 'The girl hair good, she just lazy ...thought because its natural she couldnt do it...the girl hair good & soft' lol she said that to her friend...which made me feel better but I just couldnt believe it cos the relaxed hair sister she chose to weave over mine, her hair was breaking really bad but she was happy to do hers over mine...WOW!

Its a COMMITMENT, so its not just a woman going on a whim, it takes a lot of thought and dedication, and MONEY...
birdbath318 10 months ago
I appreciate your video. And you know what makes me upset is when people would say that I would have good hair. And then I would tell them they had good hair because ALL hair is good hair. But people couldn't take the compliment. That was when my hair was relaxed and when I had long locs. I just recently did the big chop and cut my locs off. And now peeps are acting like they think I have bad short hair now. How bogus... I feel liberated to rock my fro now.

i love all types of hair. i have 3a hair and some 2 hair.
Tabbimomo87 1 year ago
I definitely agree with her but we must consider the fact that natural hair are hard to look after whether it is beautiful or not. Not every single black women wants to deny their origins but straight hair are more practical...

I disagree.

Ok so I have a question. If straight hair is said to be trying to make hair more Euro or Asian like (which I don't really agree with) then what's the diffrence in using moisturizing products? That's no more natural than straighten it.
Reginastar28 2 years ago
regina, well, moisturizing is essential for HEALTHY HAIR...moisture won't permanently change the texture of your hair..it just strengthens it. It's just like taking vitamins and such. Furthermore, one can moisturize their hair with natural oils (in conjunction with water) ie. olive oil, avocado, omega 3's, etc...moisture is essential for hair just as it is for skin and proper organ function.
emergencyexit16 2 years ago 4
Uhm, moisture doesnt do anything to your hair. It just makes hair healthy. Chemicals permanently change your hair, where as moisture doesnt change your hair permanently.

I am an African American girl with natural hair, and I've been curious about how a relaxer would affect my hair. However, I decided to stay natural. Your video influenced me a great deal because I'm doing a science report on the strength of hair. And this video gave me more insight on hair in general and how the media has had an impact on how we sometimes negatively view our hair. So thanks a lot for that.=)

We only need to learn how to take care of the wonderful hair God gave each one of us.
artsyjc 2 years ago 3
I got a relaxer when I was 5. My hair had tight curls that would spring back if you combed them and it was much like the Mowry twins. I hated it! Not because I thought it was ugly, but because my mama couldn't comb hair and she pulled my hair like crazy when it got tangled. I was happy that my hair was straightened after I got a perm because it was easier when she combed it, BUT she didn't take care of it right and it broke off quickly. NOW I am trying to go natural. Permed hair is overrated.
karmaJUNKEE 2 years ago 2
Well, I do understand why some people don't really want to walk around with their natural hair, but I think it's ridiculous when they walk around with weave down to their arse. I have curly hair, so I don't really have a problem with my hair. I love it like it is, but I don't know if I would have if it was kinky because I don't have kinky hair.
SweetaRoxious 2 years ago
I het nothing but compliments on my natural kinky, lumpy, curly style...from males and females. so-called Asians, Latinos, Black people and white people. I have men hit on me every day and I have never had a problem getting a job. Everyone can spot genuine self-acceptance. But the fake, "I should but don't really" thing will never get rave reviews. I exercise regularly to keep my sexuality and heath from degrading...and never worry about water of any kind (perspiration included) .

i think tempest bledsoe would be a better example, she wore several natural styles during the show. it's also very interesting that all the stars you showed for blk beauty examples were all light skinned, light eyed or both--which is another issue esp for black women. while black men get the adoration from women of all colors no matter what shade they come in nowadays, black women still are not considered cute unless they are light skinned, long haired, or light eyes--more cream in the coffee
babyEroose 2 years ago
I am soo glad you showed the mowry twins!! b/c it's interesting that when their show 1st came out their hair was curly silky & long, however i remember ppl thinking they were ugly which was odd b/c light skin & mixed in the 90s automatically meant you were cute. then when they straightened their hair every one was like 'they're sooo cute." even then as a 12 y/o i was saying all they did was straighten their hair. tatyana ali and chili are both mixed. rudy's hair was natural, but it was also long
babyEroose 2 years ago 6
girl I remember that too all the guys in jr.high were like, their ugly they look like mop tops lol, but once we got to high school and they straightened their hair on the show, girl everyone was jocking the twins, girls included lol.

I went natural when I was pregnant & have been locked since he was 2 years old & I'm so happy. he's growing his hair now & wants an afro!

i know alot of women that relax their kids hair. i dont think its ok..and if other girls in the media had nice texture hair..its nothing wrong with it. we cant control whats on tv. it starts at home..tyra is wearing her regular hair now. tyra kept it real and told the women what hair type she has. like tyra said you have choices. do what makes you happy but mom's should teach their daughters how to do their own hair and love themseleves.
honeyluv15 2 years ago 3
Well, and thoughtfully said (even though didn't need 13.5 mins). When I was growing up, curly or straight hair was always referred to as "good hair", and mother's bragged about their kids "good hair" as if they had done something special to deserve it. Any child of the family who did not have "good hair" (opp. kinky) was inadvertently made to feel inferior. I wish no young girl ever had to grow up with that feeling of inferiorly imposed at such a young age.

Getting a perm was the best thing that ever happened to me. I perm my hair every 6 weeks with regular conditioning in between. My hair is long and beautiful now. Just because some women prefer relaxed hair doesnt mean we hate ourselves. I like the look.
sesshomarulover06 2 years ago
I have to point out a contradiction in your post. You said "just because some women prefer relaxed hair doesn't mean we hate ourselves" and just before that said "my hair is long and beautiful *now.*" Your natural hair is beautiful. Though I'm sure you are a proud black woman, that is a form of self-hatred. I've been there.
ellemacamelle 2 years ago 2
see that is what gets me, why when this debate comes up we always fall on the 'hating ourselves' & 'wanting to be white' mantra? that may have been the case in the 40s but i relax my hair for neither reason. It's EASY!! once every 8 wks i use the mild relaxer. i didn't get perms til i was 12 so i remember the HOURS of work i had to put into my hair. not only that, but i can fro out my relaxed hair & i rock that look too.
babyEroose 2 years ago
I get tired of ppl thinking b/c I straighten my hair I hate myself. I actually had natural hair for a long time (longer than all of my friends) but I never left the house w/it natural--always straightened. It was the trend when I got a perm the natural look was not in at all. We could use the 'wanna be white' excuse but considering that white ppl w/naturally curly hair hate their hair too usually, we as women could point to the feminine ideal that men want a woman w/long, flowing, straight hair.
babyEroose 2 years ago
you never left home without your hair straightened- even when you wore it natural? but you have NO shame in your natural hair, even though you obviously saw it unfit to wear outside, where perhaps, other people may see it? how could you NOT see that as anything other than SHAME OF SELF? lol!!!
cammpyluv 2 years ago 2
i think when we "relax" kids hair,,, its kinda strips their identity before its even formed well. and thats why this cycle continues. I remember when i was younger and wanted it done and my mother said no. I did it on my own at the age of 21 kept it for 2 years and now i am one year into being natural again.. i feel relived and lighter and more like myself again. this is my personal take on it. but i guess for others it differs
violetqueen 2 years ago
But I truly believe that many black women look absolutely stunning when they leave their hair natural. I think the reason why they don't is for two very distinct reasons. A) They are underrepresented in the media, just as you pointed out. B) I think it's also a lack of knowing exactly how to style and care for their hair in a natural state. If you have been having your hair relaxed/permed since childhood, then you haven't been taught how to care for it, or even how to style it.

As a little girl, I made the comment "Molly gots bi
rooftopmelodies 2 years ago 4
ggy hair and I gots none" about another girl with thick, long hair.
Just like us she wants her hair to look different and cute."
rooftopmelodies 2 years ago
Hey. Even so, it doesn't mean that weaves look bad. . .
woodie62 2 years ago
Asian women def. but weaves in their hair. I went to multicultural highschool and had friends who would go home to china and get the lastest weave/track whatever. But they do put pieces in their hair as well.

Same way we lear how to treat permed, processed hair, we can learn how to braid it and do beautiful dos with it.
Love the skin you're in! Our body, from top to toe, is God's temple and it should be honoured, not mocked with!

Your mom is correct. Helix-Hair (nappy) defies gravity. The desire to emulate that power is what iis at the bottom of all of that "product" on the shelves that other people use to make their hair stand up. It is the marker of original man/woman.

We have to start looking at ourselves on a real mirror, not other people mirrors, if you get what I mean.

hair grade is the type of hair you have growing out of your head, if you have a relaxer you can not really tell your exact hair grade.
hair grade ranges from 1a-4b
i have a video on this very topic it's called hair grades for all types of people, check it out when u get a chance=)

you are right, about alot of things u stated in this vid! and also, if you pay close attention , there are some black sororities that seem to only have members that have lighter complexions and/or long , permed hair. also, our black men really dont support our natural hair, they dont support us with that, because while they dont wanna hurt there woman's feelings, they too are wishing there woman would have straight or weaved hair, the majority!
ezridax 2 years ago 6
Yeah, I agree with you about the black men. I believe they go for everyone but us because they don't love themselves and want their children to have the straight hair. They go for the latinas, whites, asians, and native americans before they will touch us. Sad, but true. Okay, I will be fair, most of them.

your so right, black men to play a big part!

what is wrong with going outside of your race?? that's the problem with most black women they think just because a black man wants to date a white woman or a hispanic woman they MUST hate black women. that's just ignorant.

The comments you make are whats ignorant. Wow. Its just too laughable.

I feel I have influenced lots of women to go natural over the years.
silvermoon819 2 years ago
I understand what you are implying, but there are more important issues in this world besides good hair vs bad hair.. Sorry but even obama said, "stop crying and move forward".

you just made me think and wonder why my mother did that to me and my older sisters. we were permed young. I cant tell you how many times I have watched my hair fall out and me get another perm because I had "figured it out" and "this time it wont fall out" never realized that I was brainwashed until recently. I had hair down my back not a year ago...ALL NATURAL and I permed it. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. my husband likes it permed but I gotta do me. going on 4 months transitioning & so happy!!
caliBornbEauty 2 years ago 2

Thats why I'm going natural with my children !

yup i seen that episode of the Tyra show, and i thought it was so funny how when Tyra talks about hair on her show she always has a braid or a kinky wavy lace front who is she fooling. the next day she rocking her blond straight hair.
anyways i think your a good speaker i enjoyed your video.
abbalisous 2 years ago
IFYOUCANTHINK77 2 years ago

Pretty sad.
bobelly628 2 years ago
A good point you mentioned was the fact that there's barely any girls/women in the media with kinky hair. Who are the girls supposed to look up to? Even their mothers wear perms or weaves. =(

good hair is hair that GROWS! if your hair is growing it is GOOD HAIR no matter what the texture is. God didn't make any mistakes when he made our hair. it just up to us on how we wear, style it, fix it, treat or care for it.

Congrats on going natural....Im going to natural hair too.
Today june 5th makes my 6th month anniversary.
Im loving my natural texture and I will never ever in life relax my hair. I love my kinky curly hair nappy hair.
I was wondering what products do u use?
Relaxing gave me a bald spot 6 months ago and now I'm paying for it and its slowing growing back.
Do u have any suggestions on hair care?
mya32189 2 years ago
mya32189-If you eat healthy your hair will grow. I know that eating food with vitamins will grow your hair. Also eating nuts to keep your roots moist. Hair products are what we use to give our hair a certain look. Healthy eating is what actually grows your hair. Also trimming your ends when necessary.
gmcmim 2 years ago
Tyra only wore cornrows so ppl wouldnt question her weave/relaxing obssesion.
But I wanna knowwhy she didnt tell why she wear perms/relaxers?
mya32189 2 years ago
Have you seen the very beginning of her shows before it actually begins Tyra has shown her in many different stages, with hair without hair with makeup and without makeup. Her crew (black I might add) do her weaves and TOO much makeup. Off the set she admits she just likes to be free of all the extra makeup and hair hype.
PeligieIsis 2 years ago
i feel you, but kids don't see her off set, little girls see her on tv, full of make up and weave, if her "black" crew is piling make up and weave on her, then that is her fault, she is the executive producer, so what ever she says go's and she can put a stop to it. i love tyra but i'm just keeping it real, i wear wigs and don't make excuses for it, it is what it is.
if she likes her wigs, then she should rock them, but don't switch to braids for this particular show that was very fake.
lovelyti2002 2 years ago

Now if you have a beautician who is black and can't work with black hair; then you seriously have a problem.

Why hate on the little girl who wants blonde hair? TYRA wears blond hair. Therefore, the little girl DID NOT get this idea from a white girl, she got it from TYRA, BEYONCE, MARY J. BLIGE, T-BOZ, and so many others that wear blonde hair.
lovethesetits 2 years ago
who's hating on the little girl? and before u write a smart comment talking about all I like to do is wear is straight hair, trick I suggest you watch more of my vid, I rock my hair straight, curly, natural, crazy, what ever,
I never said that I wasn't contributing to the problem by wearing weaves,
but I'm not going to sit here like tyra and act like I'm not guilty of perpetuating these images so check ya self!

Really good video, I did not know about the brown paper bag thing.
Nikitta43 2 years ago 3
There's also the ruler test. There was a time when your hair had to be as straight as a ruler for you to be accepted into black high society or into traditionally black colleges.
bjohns1975 2 years ago 3
Are you serious? You would have to be damn near white!
Indiegirl007 2 years ago
It's true. There's a book called Our Kind of People: Inside Americas Black Upper Class. The book really gets into the brown paper bag test and the ruler test. Light skinned blacks with "good" hair only socialized with and married their own kind.
bjohns1975 2 years ago 2
OMG thANK YOU!I am light skinned, and I have thick thick thick thick thick poofy and wavy hair and I am transistioning as you know.People say I have an asian/indian/type-Samoan hair type and i have long godo hair..it really needs to stop..because no matter how light we are, whites will consider us as dark skinned, standing next to them!It really is sad because I had friends that got called names because their dark pretty choclate. Good hair is healthy hair, when will they not realize that?!

Great vid. <3
Laboheme5 2 years ago 6
Whoa. That's insanity.

SAD!!!!
desirem1 2 years ago 3

That's why I do my own hair.
randb247 2 years ago 4
Same thing happened to me!.
