I am pretty damn certain that Mr. Marsalis can pick up a natural trumpet and play this tune. He's talked about having them since his college days I believe. I prefer the sound he gets with his Schilke, but to each his own. Here is a nice version done by Mr. Mayfield /watch?v=mTBicT1v3vQ
Wynton is amazing and the best out there now--but no one played like Maurice Andre- every note is accented when Andre played..Wynton does it well here but Andre took the breath to new level and no one is even close today..rip Maurice...
@jonowonoponosono Not true, some good renditions on here for natural trumpet, and believe it or not some guys, not many, can play pic stuff on the big Bb.
Great to see Marsalis recording this. Excellent playing. Check out my performance, recorded in London last month - just click on my username to get to my channel & let me know what you think! Cheers

mjarail has a point. hes wrong in saying that any conservatory player could do that. thats obviously not true. but natural trumpet would be much more difficult to play than piccolo. ive yet to hear wynton play one tho maybe he does and i am not aware of it? id love to hear him play one though and it would be a new challenge for him
@pohatyam ever thought that with all the traveling and performing this man does that he probably doesn't have time to perform this on natural trumpet even if he was interested in it? not all great trumpet players play every kind of trumpet. let the man do what he does... why criticize someone that's making millions when you're not?
@zander392 its funny that you should take such a defensive line. i am of the opinion that wynton is the best classical trumpeter in the world or at least my own favourite. the suggestion of a new challenge for his can hardly be viewed as a criticism. it is a very common view that using piccolo isnt authentic, while i play piccolo myself and not natural trumpet yet i wouldnt entirely support this however a man of wyntons ability shouldnt have too much trouble adapting to a new challenge
He really takes this piece and makes it his own. It's like Tocatta and Fugue. Many orchestras play it, and get it as technically correct as possible to the sheet music, but the orchestra that played it for Fantasia really gave it personality.

Any good trumpet student from any conservatory could do equally as well. If Mr. Marsalis was as good as people think, then he should perform this and other Baroque trumpet work on a natural trumpet.
@mjarail So should Maurice Andre if that's the case. Wynton is one of the few people who play Jazz and Classical trumpet better than most people on the planet. True, I have a friend I went to school with that can play this piece but it doesn't sound anything like this. Negative comments are not necessary. The way I see it, he's making lots of money and you are probably not... He's doing something right!
I absolutely love, love, love this! I often find myself rewinding the Tivo so I can listen to it more than once...always with my eyes closed. Cheesey, I know...but I like what I like.
That tune still reminds me of Charles Kurault

That is a guess, but please let me know if I am right. Then I will continue.
