Alot of comments here that Villeneuve couldn't do it with a crap car. I beg to differ, he consistently put the BAR in the points in the opening season for the team only to be let down by mechanical fails.

And in 98 He constantly put his shockingly poor Williams amongst the McLarens and Ferrari's, with Frentzen who was no slouch 4 or 5 places behind him..

Villeneuves biggest problem was the fact he just lost motivation for the sport he belived it should be about the driver and lose all the aids

i think jacques was good, but jenson button like good, when he had the car that nobody else could even touch, because let's face it, nobody could beat those williams, what was always hard for me to see him all that great was just cause i'm such a fan of his father, think he was one of the best ever, one of the ballsiest drivers for sure, and jacques didn't have that in my opnion, but he was very good.

1997 proved one thing, that he won with the best package, logical, and he laminated Frentzen? Big deal, Frentzen was a really weird egg, inconsistent and totally asleep. Then, after 1997, Villeneuve really showed how much of a total asshole he was by doing nothing, and having the stupidity to mega-inflate his market value. So much, that he simply got kicked out of F-1 in 2006, bravo.

I disagree with people who claim that Badoer had always been a bad driver. He was driving in 4th position in a Mindardi on Nürburgring track back in 1999 before having a technical problem...plus he was 3 positions ahead of his teammate Marc Gené. As for Villeneuve: An average driver who just like Hill got the chance to drive the best car and thus won.

@itsinthegameAI The only reason why Damon Hill won the championship was because Schumacher decided to move to Ferrari and build up the team in 1996. Damon made WAY TO MANY MISTAKES to be called a superior driver. He basically threw away the 1995 championship because of stupid mistakes eventhough the Williams FW 17 was much faster than the Benneton B 195. I really don't like schumi either because of his dirty driving techniques but thats how it was in the 90s.

Villeneuve was a fantastic driver at the start of his F1 career nearly winning the title in 1996 and winning it in 1997. However it all went downhill from there. From what I remember big salaries were more important that winning races after 1998.

Indy 500 as well : and if memory serves, after one year in F1 he achieved the title

at 25 y.o. undeniably showing quite a cool management of his cars.I don't know why

Sorry, but I can't really agree that Jacques was such a bad driver as everyone is making him out to be. For one, he did win the championship, and even with the best car it can be lost, but you also have to remember his start and how young he was when he won the Cart championship. It's true that his career afterwards was not the brightest, but he got a couple of high finishes with bad cars. And currently he is doing well in LeMans, notably a second place finish in the 24h race.

I did say that i didn't consider him to be the best driver ever but certainly a very good driver. History is littered with drivers who could not get the job done even with the best car so let's not just use this as criticizm. My point is that he's a very good driver who possesed some outstanding qualities and on his day to be able to beat the best of the best. He certainly did this in both Cart and F1.

When you are good or very good, you remain so until the end of your career, like Schumacher. Villeneuve was just able to drive the best car, not develop it, and this flaw showed up dramatically after 1997. He had the chance to drive a top car in 2004 with the Renault, but he failed that also. The proof that any driver can dish out with the best car, just remember Mika Salo in Germany in 1999...

I agree the Jaques was not a car developer, he'd just drive the car, pretty much like a Raikkonen or even Hakkinen. These guys rely more on the team doing the set up unlike Schumacher, Senna or Prost. However in the right car he was a very good driver and a great overtaker. By the end of his career he was no longer at his best but this does not take away from his early F1 and Cart.

I still remember Irvine having a go in the last part in Argentina GP. I attended the race in the motordrome that day, Irvine with Ferrari, Villeneuve with Williams. One more lap, and Irvine would have won the race. In fact, Irvine after pits stops preserved his tyres (in Lauda's or Prost's fashion that day) while Vileneuve made it on his own fashion. The result: Villeneuve destroyes his tyres and finished the race with a slow puncture, while Irvine challenged him, being near to win. Same skills.

Villeneuve's carrer is well documented, all there to read. Before Indy, his career was a waste, but his illustrious name opened doors for him. He was lucky that Tortora, a journalist that is a family friend made a phonecall that got his formula antlantic drive real and that snowballed him straight into indy cars. Ok, the Indy race was a great one but F-1 was good to him in 96 and 97 because he sat his ass in the best car, and covered 12000 miles of testing too.
