what's with the laser? and how about the martian soil? did that rover return to earth?

The laser is used because radio waves would take a day to get back to earth, however the laser could send information back to the orbiter, then the orbiter could send the info back to earth within 1-3 hours (depending where mars and earth were in their respective orbits). For the soil, it's not soil, it's rust from Iron deposits in the ground, and about returning, no, nothing sent to the martian surface has come back.

The laser is a rapid pulse laser that blinks in either binary or Morse code (honestly can't remember)
