I thought Harvey Dent (Billy Dee Williams) was going to tell the people of Gotham City, "Attention. Attention. The Galactic Empire has taken over our city. All are advised to leave at once."
AWESOME ENDING, I still get goosepumps hearing it. In the moviehouses in 1989, it just looked and sounded so EPIC. The Dark Knight was great, of course, but the most epic scene to me in all Bartman movies is this ending to the 1989 film.
@THEDARKKNlGHT1939 No I mean like, for the ending when Batman gets cleared of the murders and all and is recognized as the true protector of Gotham, they re-established the bat signal publicly like in this scene.
You cant deny that Tim Burton was the man who brought the modern Batman to life, it all went downhill when Schumacher took over the franchise. I always like Michael Keaton in whatever he's in and he still is the best Batman for me but Christian Bale is also doing a fantastic job. I like the way the new Christopher Nolan versions are made a more dark and has a realistic feel to it. The end theme to the original Batman on this video still sends shivers down my spine, Danny Elfman is the best!!!
commissiner gordon was so USLESS in the Burton films, such a shame because hes such a big character and should be having a much better relationship with batman but he doesnt in these films. Nolans batman on the other hand his relationship wit Batman is awesome i just wish it would been the same in these movies because i love burtons batmans better.
@Richard1222ify Kilmer wasn't a bad actor, he just got stuck with a hack-directed, atrociously written, tasteless landfill of nipple-ridden human garbage and neon Batman movie.
this movie needs a 2012 or 2013 re release n the theaters, any agree with me? I mean it would be awesome to see this in the cinema again (this movie was released before I was born)
@vegettoSSJ3ROCKSS I agree...and why not? since they are starting to do it with older films now and putting them in 3D...why not this film? I would pay to see this movie again if it was put in theaters.
@jamminwithjam Same here...this scene and Captain America saving the POW and having Alan Silvestri/Captain America March song start playing never fails to put a a chil down my spine.
@xFIRERUSHx Batman Forever is a good movie too, it have a good balance between darkness and light, and its very funny too, the animated movies are great as well, specially Mask of the Phantasm, Return of the Joker and Under the Hood
i find batman begins and the dark knight much better than this BUT i still like this movie and glad it happened because it was one of the first superhero movies that wasnt afraid to be dark and it did pave the way for the animated series, which made my childhood. also, the ending freakin owns.
@MrImastinker Agreed. I don't think there's a Batman fan in the world who wouldn't be thrilled to see that movie end on the exact same shot of Batman high above the city looking out at the bat signal.
Watched this movie so many times as a kid, Id sit in front of the tube on the floor with my diecast Batmobile and Batwing and be in locked into Kid Fantasy Land
Superman Batman Ghostbusters TMNT movies and growing up with the rest of the 90s Cartoons was great
I'm 17 and this is my favorite Batman movie and one of my all time favorite movies. And I didn't grew up watching this movie, and I'm proud of it. Because that makes my decision pure and sincere, without being conditioned by nostalgia or childhood memories. This movie is truly the Best.
honestly, if they were to never do another movie after this one, this would've been the perfect ending to the whole series...such a powerful ending with a great score and amazing imagery. i love this.
you know what would be soooooooo sick? if chris nolan had this theme at the end of dark knight rises with the same pose as tribute to this! that would fuking awesome!
Sucks for Christian bale and Christopher reeve since they played DCs top 2 heroes in movies and got stuck with ugly chicks while Keaton got hooked up with basinger and pfeiffer
@woodyburns I see your point, but Katie Holmes was Bale's girl in Batman Begins. For Christopher Reeve, Superman had Lana Lang played by Annette O"Toole in Superman III and Clark Kent played a girl played by Margaux Hemingway in Superman IV. They were pretty.
Chris Nolan should definitely steal this ending for Dark Knight Rises. As a die hard Batman fan i wouldn't feel the least bit offended if he did so thats how good and epic that final scene with Batman watching over Gotham city really is!
Only thing that could make this any better is if Batman at the ending of the finale as the cameras rise, uttered "I am Vengence, I am the Night...I am BATMAN!"
This scene alone is synonomous with my childhood. Every single time, the score never fails at giving me goosebumps and taking me back to that exact moment of me sitting on the floor of my parents house in awe. Absolutely amazing, and epic ending to a great film. Easily Tim Burton's greatest. The atmosphere, the characters, everything. Big ups to Danny Elfman. I'm sure if the score was different, it wouldn't have had such a lasting impression.
You said it brother. I would have to stand on the family room couch for this moment every time, watching it on our 25", wooden TV. Still get the goosebumps today. We can thank the late legend Maurice Murphy, principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra for his thrilling High Ds at the end of this one. Same guy who manned the brass sections for all 6 Star Wars, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark FYI.
I first watched it when it came out in a VHS collection of Batman movies including this one, Batman Returns, and Batman Forever.
Now that I'm 22 and have all those same Batman movies on DVD, I continue to watch 'em over and over again as I did as a kid. They will never get old to me. Greatest Batman movies ever!!!!!!!
This is the best Batman end of story. Ledger has been lionized for what was a better than average but not stunning performance. Either way, there is SO much time wasted in Dark Knight and Batman Begins with all the worthless woe is me whining and 30 minutes of origin story. Also the ENTIRE two face portion of the movie is WORTHLESS. It feels so tacked on, as if they felt like the joker wasn't enough. Then, to top it off, the scene with the boats at the end was awful and unnecessary.
@W4RLoL87 Yeah, now we can click 2:03 over and over again. This still beats the new Batman in my book any day of the week. I just wish Batman and Robin had been this good.
"please inform the citizens of gotham, that gotham city has earned a rest from crime. but if the forces of evil should rise again, and cast a shadow on the heart of the city, call me"
definitely one of the best endings i've ever seen in a movie! the look, the sound, and the feel just goes together perfectly. hats off to tim burton for directing such a great movie, to michael keaton for portraying both bruce wayne and batman awesomely(no matter how short you are), to jack nicholson for an awesome portrayal of the joker, and to danny elfman for creating a score that just fits well w/the movie. and this ending theme is proof of that...
Yes, let's have a press conference to applaud the masked vigilante who took the law into his own hands to play judge, jury, and executioner, therefore making all our jobs moot.
And then they act surprised when he appeared to have gone batshit blood-thristy in the sequel. They're such blistering idiots, it's no wonder they need a man in a cape to rescue them.
Epic indeed. I saw it summer '89 when I was 12 and for those too young to know this... Batman was absolutely HUGE when it came out. Even bigger than the Dark Knight when it came out. Fans had been begging for a Batman movie for many many years, and finally Burton gave us this. It was a home run. I also remember the VHS release was a huge event as well... a huge campaign for the Christmas '89 season.
@dgware I too remember this well! I was 9 years old in the summer of 89. Me and my grandparents went to the theater with the intention of seeing Honey I shrunk the Kids, however, I through a tantrum and as a result, convinced them to see this for like the 3rd time in a row! Also, it was pretty intense when the action figures were released, you literally could NOT get them anywhere for like the first 2 weeks! However, i hate to say it, but 'Batman' was only half as big as The Dark Knight.
@dgware Batman grossed about $250 million at the domestic box office. Dark Knight grossed over $500 million. However, I suppose you can factor in inflation if you want.
i was 5 when i saw this on Christmas.....AMAZING MEMORIES
u might remember this, but was there a steel Bat Wing toy ???
i just have a vision of a steel toy i had when i was young and all the paint was cracking off it because i kept on chewing it !!! and breaking a window with it.........i think it was the Bat Wing.....
@dgware Batman may have seemed bigger because you were 12 . Dark Knight is considered the best superhero movie ever made and did it in an era where superhero movies are ruling the box office . Batman was at best a blockbuster . Batman was the highest grossing DC film until Dark Knight and DK made more money on blu-rays (A harder sell today than VHS back then) than Batman's VHS release . Stop comparing this film to Dark Knight and just let it be what it is .
I will never forget this ending. I was only a year old when this movie came out. I bet this ending in theaters was very epic..gives me goosebumps everytime i watch it. i could imagine if i had seen it at the movies! its awesome...no disrespect at all to the Christopher Nolan Batman films...YES their great BUT..you put the ending to both movies together and they will never touch the epic ending to this! the original Batman that we all grew to love...truly epic!
d actually love it if Chirstopher Nolan would sort of do a variation of this scene in The Dark Knight Rises. For me this is the perfect way to end a batman film and a perfect way to bookend his series. Also, this scene perfectly illustrates the notion of the "dark knight" "rising", by being finally accepted by the public and finding his place in Gotham City
Best part-
Knox: Question. How do we call him?
Gordon: He gave us the signal!

@haibane13 Superman: The Movie. That and the Dark Knight are considered the best.

@dgware Didn't fans originally not like the choice of Michael Keaton as Batman because he was originally known for comedy?

Fucking epic....

God, its bullshit that Vicki didn't come back in the second one. Sure, her screaming was mind-grating, but at least she was a fascinating character.
thelupoistheman1 11 months ago
@thelupoistheman1 Selina Kyle always has been, and always will be the only woman Bruce Wayne ever loved
Vicki had to go
at least Bruce mentioned her, and we weren't just expected to pretend she didn't exist

@thelupoistheman1 i hated her character they actually intended to bring hey back in returns thank god they didnt
