  • that's fantastic!! look at keith emerson at the end, when his hammond doesn't work!!!! (=

  • I find it a little curious that after researching David O'list, I come away with the feeling that He was his own greatest fan. The trip into his site was similar to listening to a bi-polar chap I know who claims to be all things to all people.

  • thatmusemuse76:

    Spot on mate.

I saw both The Nice and ELP many times.

    The nice excited.

    ELP were dull.

  • While Lake and Palmer were better instrumentalists (Lake is certainly a better singer), I always preferred Jackson and Davison. The Nice were innovative, ELP was overblown and pompous.

  • I would like to disagree with your last comment. It seems to be popular misunderstanding of the music and influence of ELP.

When you realy take the time to listen to the musicality and complexity of - and love and passion in the music, your two qualifications should be over thought again. Although I fully recognize and love the newness and spirit and energie of KE and the Nice. Sorry for my English, I am Dutch.

  • @thatmuse76 ELP may have been overblown and pompous but they had more talent both as a group and as individual musicians than 95% of the acts of that time. And years later, they are still appreciated by those who love fine music while your comments are insignificant and of little import.

  • Semper in excreta sumus solum profundum variat

  • He used to really test pianos and organs to their absolute limits! Sticking knives into them, dangling them from the ceiling, etc.

  • Ars longa, vita brevis, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile

life is short, the art of it long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult

    apparently from Hippocrates

  • Very creative stuff here. Pop music today doesn't even come close in musical creativity. The late sixties was such a special period in pop music. And the Nice were pioneers of the prog movement without a doubt. Keith Emerson's piano playing never fails to astound. This band could jam live. Wow. Great stuff!

  • A great piece of music; these live footage clips from studioRAF are just brilliant. Thank you so much.

RIP Blinky - a truly great jazz drummer and nice guy.

I had to raise a smile about the comments on Keith's ego.....I bet he thought he had an ego too until he met Greg Lake!

  • Art is longer, life is short...This is the most awesome musical video that I have seen in my life. The nice is the beginning of progressive rock...Ars longa vita brevis.

  • Yes, it can and should be argued that The Nice were the real beginning of progressive rock. Them and early Floyd.

Piano solo here not as focused as album version, but of course, absolutely fascinating to watch.

    the word of gord

  • I believe the hat that Emerson wears in these vid's was given to him by Judy Garland.

  • er...clearly, that's a Jimi Hendrix style hat.

  • I read it in either Emerson's autobiography "Pictures of an Exhibitionist" or the Biography of The Nice "Hang On To A Dream".

I wasn't aware that Hendrix was a milliner!

  • Yeah, I think your right, I read Pictures of an Exhibitionist as well, and Emerson claimed to have swapped hats with Garland, whether that's the hat or not, I'm not sure.

  • Yes Judy Garland's hat a prime possession unfortunately lifted from Emo's possession. Any-news of it's where-abouts greatly appreciated by keith

  • That hat is probably gone forever.

  • JUST AWESOME!!!I had this performance on a bootleg cd and wondered if any of the footage survived and behold you provided it-many thanks for this.keith Emerson is like a mad Keith Jarrett when he gets going!!!

  • Ars Longa Vita Brevis was The Nice's early masterpiece.. It's a real treat to see it on video finally! Keith Emerson is a fantastic musican and composer.

He has so many detractors because of his ego, I think his ego and his antics fit his music very well! Thanks for posting!!

  • I think it was after, when the band was looking for someone permanent to play guitar. By the way thanks for posting this, the Nice are a way under appreciated band and deserve more credit for there skill.

  • Keith Emerson was on a different level, the man is a genius

  • Yes, it's David O'List.

We see him much more in the first video.

He seems to be clearly out of the band here, but I'm happy to see him cause I didn't know that he has played "Ars longa..." on stage; I thought he was gone just before.

Never forget that this guy got the great honnour of replacing Syd Barret in "The" Pink Floyd on several gigs late 1967.

    Eternal respect !!!

  • I think he also played with Jethro Tull for a few days as well.

  • Does he played with Jethro Tull before or after Tommy Iommy ?

  • I think after, when they were looking for someone who could play on a regular basis. I guess David didn't fit. By the way, thanks for uploading this series, The Nice is a way under rated band with some serious talent.

  • @studioRAF

    I think after Iommi.

  • I've just come to end of the 4th video, and Lee Jackson says it's David O'List, so it must be. Odd that's he's right in the background, though...

  • Absolutely amazing!! This is brilliant!! Thank you for posting these unique videos. I just wonder - I suppose that is Davy O'List hanging around in the background? I just wonder why we never see him clearly, not that I'm particularly bothered! If it is him, it must be one of his very last appearances with The Nice. But these videos are just brilliant!!
