  • Maybe I should clean my ears, but I think the Keeley sounded better with the Strat. While the Rothwell sounds better with the Tele. Of course as a bass player I would prefer the Keeley with the extra knobs to control the output level. When I used to play electric guitar I always used compressors with chorus, it was heavenly. It works well with delay as well due to the fact that you have a more balanced signal that is re..re...repeated. I also used it after overdrive in the effects loop. ;)

  • is that Basterds of the Young? must be.

  • I like the Carl Martin the best. I guess it comes down to what a person likes and how they want their sound compressed. To me the Carl Martin is the most studio like when compared to these two.

  • 2:20 TAKE ME OUT!!!

  • Keeley all the way

  • The fact that you used a Replacements song in the demo makes me dig this channel even more!!!

  • "Bypass" is the winner...

  • i thought the keeley sounded much better

  • what's the point of a compression pedal?

  • @roroproduction compression is the point of a compression pedal.

  • Andy! Nice demo! If the settings you used are the ones pictured (the pic of the gold custom color unit) then I would say it might be set "wrong" in my opinion. For single coils, I think it's really ideal to try the Attack control all the way down (counterclockwise) and the Input cliping control all of the way up. Unless you get distortions from super hot pickups. I do hear the grit you mention, and it's NOT TYPICAL at all of Telecasters. Something seems a little off in what I would expect.

  • Horrible guitarist, put someone on like Brent Mason, Brad Paisley who knows how to play and can embellish a compressor.....

  • @wolverine7196 i know someone better! check out Guitar World's demos.

    /sarcasm

  • Bypass wins! Hahaha

  • Aha!I noticed it,the high end color in the Keely. I liked the Roth.the thing I need most is practice, but having a solid tone to work with is a big help. Thanks,PGS,for helping us find our tones and giving us a chance to educate our ears with your vids!

  • I have the keeley and i feel like it can get to squishy especialy with humbuckers. It also gets super noise with single coils. I was considering the Diamond comp. What do you guys think about that one?

  • such a beautiful riff at the end!!

could you give me the tabs?? thx

  • Both great pedals - depends if you want colouration in the tone or not. Personally, I do - I like a bit of squish for playing country. Use a CS3 with Monte Allums mod, and it does the job for me. There's no winner, just different options.

  • Keeley suggests to put the compressor AFTER your main overdrive. But what if your main overdrive is the overdrive of the amp? How can you put the compressor AFTER the distortion of your amp?

  • @Dedalusalley - Don't worry about it. Just put the compressor in front. People have been doing it for decades. Everything will be good, we promise.

    -PGS Crew

  • @Dedalusalley or run it thru the effects loop.. if you have one

  • I liked the Rothwell and previously thought I wanted a Keeley. Despite the fact I can afford neither and have a Dynacomp anyway...

  • so, which is the best? :(

  • take me out

  • just buy a tuner comps are lame.

  • @jhump2431 - I think you're confused about what compressors do.....or you're confused about what tuners do.

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos haha Im just saying I have no need for one, they hiss too much and give me headaches lol. Im just saying as far a utility pedals go i dont see the point in having one but thats all a personal preference. I see lots of people who have these and they never get a tuner and upon hearing them play i relalize they got the wrong pedal.

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos lol that is too funny

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos This is a really late comment, but I think he was meaning, you don't need pedals except for a tuner. hahaha

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos that made me lol.

  • @jhump2431 duh!

  • @jhump2431 Ok, Homer

  • Tele + 57' Twin -absolutely brilliant tone. I'd "trade my family" for hearing that with '63 Reverb... Greetings ;)

  • Which would you guys recommend to set up with my Keeley DS-1 and TS9DX 4x2 - the C4 or the Love Squeeze? I know the video says the Love Squeeze is the most transparent compressor there is, but I was hoping to get an opinion on how each compressor will respond to the level distortion I will be using/stacking. I've got two Keeley pedals so obviously I'd assume the three of them would sync up nicely, but the Love Squeeze if 40 bucks cheaper and is supposed to sound better. Any advice?

  • May i ask whats the song he played at the end, loved it by the way!

  • @ljguitarman sounds like take me out by franz ferdinand

  • Whoa, it's weird seeing you

  • Andy is the man

  • also, it's so hard to make any real decisions based on youtube pedal reviews. you could play with those knobs all day and never get the exact same sound twice. you really just gotta buy one you think looks nice, made with good parts, and spend time with it. i played with my fuzz pedal for hours today, it has 3 knobs and 1 switch, and after all that time i decided nothing lol. it's hard to decide what is 'better' when it all sounds great. i want the keeley though, it's purdy....

  • I personally like when my compressor ads its own coloration. it's boring to just basically have a sustain booster. I like for them to tighten up the lows, make the highs really crisp and balanced, and boost the clean signal. I say Keely

  • 1:48 and 2:04 for direct comparison (clickable by this post)

  • KEELY FTW HANDS DOWN

  • Franz Ferdinand :)

  • i've been a keeley man for a while, but that rothwell was pretty awesome.

  • Bastards of Young, love it

  • Let's hope I win the love squeeze!

    :D

this video got me more excited

  • the keeley!!!!!!!!!

  • I thought B was king, and it was obvious it was a new circuit. The A pedal sounded like... compressors always sound, which has kind of become an effect in and of itself, beyond the actual, original intent of COMPRESSION. Thanks for the demo. This should get Rothwell a lot more attention, which is clearly deserved.

  • What song are you playing from 2:15 on?

  • umm i think it's a Frentz Ferdinand

  • take me out, franz ferdinand

  • How come the Keeley two knob wasn't used as the comparison? It's my understanding that Keeley makes the four knob compressor for humbuckers and the two knob for single coils. Love the demos ......

  • The Two-Knob and Four-Knob Compressor are the same exact pedal. The Two-Knob has the same controls as the Four, but you have to use internal trim pots to make some of the adjustments. With the Four-Knobber the controls are placed conveniently on the outside of the box.

  • Why Dont U ever Post Johnny Cash

  • Rothwell is the go for sure - I thought that B was the Keeley, there you go!

  • Andy is the best "demo guy" ever!

  • Rothwell Love Squeeze Compressor? My money is on the Keeley. I tried both and found the Keeley to be better for my use.

  • I like the rothwell.

  • own a keeley. love it.

  • From the video, the Rothwell seems to be the better choice. But I own a Keeley compressor, and if you back off the attack on it, it will sound a bit more "natural" or "transparent". It would have been nice for PGR to have shown the settings on both pedals. Still the Rothwell pedals, are pretty cool, definetly worth checking out.

  • hhahaha i recently spent hours goign between the 2 vids on proguitarship of the keeley then the rothwell deciding which i was getting for my b.day.

    I got the rothwell. BOOYAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Check out the Farndurk Burgs if you want to see a good compressor. Seriously

  • The Keeley comp's sustain is more tasteful in my opinion. I have a two knob K comp, and I absolutely love it. I thought for sure the Keeley would be the favorite.

  • Shit.. I bet Andy has every pedal that's at the shop.

  • I like Rothwell more, for is more transparence. Keeley is great too but it give more color, and you dont need color on a compressor himo.

  • I know everyone will say I have no plave here but I personally dislike compressors. I love my dynamics.

  • really?, how much dinamics? from 20 spl`s to 89? not good, unless you play acoustic music of course.

  • Replacements!!!!!!

  • what song at 2:15?

  • its "take me out" by franz ferdinand

  • Bastards of Young!

  • Take. Me Out!

  • I like the Rothwell

  • I seem to be heading toward the Keeley, although I still like the fatter sound of the Rothwell. Both of which sound very good. But my favorite compressor is the Diamond Compressor.

  • i have to say both sound pretty juicy and also Andy i have to thank your videos not only for good gear reviews but also ive piked up alo of licks from your vids. keep rockin!

  • Rothwell was absolutely transparent as hell. I really like the Rothwell better.

  • i say keely

  • i really like andi's demos, he is the best out there... and the songs he uses are great.

  • Yea i knew it!!! :D :D

  • it is taste! do you play with or with out a pick, single coils or buckers, solid state or tubes, shred, country or classic??? its a choice and the smack downs help me decide.great vids keep em comin.

  • Rothwell is definitely fatter sounder..Amazing...Can the Rothwell do a really squashed tone as well ?

  • He plays some Franz Ferdinand at the end! Thanks Andy! :)

  • Yeah! It's Take Me Out!

  • I vote for the Rothwell

  • Love the tunes that Andy pulls out of his hat. In this case, three big thumbs up for "Bastards of the Young" by the Replacements.

  • I vote for the Rothwell, sounds fatter, or... the Keeley sounds thinner.

  • Good video Andy, these smack downs are a good idea. I like that you started off with the pedals as A & B first.

Can't wait to hear some fuzz, delay, and wah smack downs.

    I vote for the rothwell.

  • oh i agree man some delay, wah and andther shootouts must take part !!!

  • keeley win !!!!!!!!!!!

  • to me is sounded like B restricted the tone in the first test.

  • Bypass beats both. Compression is not cool.

  • @hallaelementary

    Compression is "not cool"?

Are you sure it isn't just a matter of taste?

  • The keeley has no snap which is why I sold my two knob keeley and still use my Boss CS-3. I thought adding an attack control would help but this one sounds pretty much as dull as mine did.....and yes I own a Barber...but it just collects dust

  • The Rothwell is very nice. Thanks Andy for the smackdown!

  • Keeley sounds good...very good...as an effect. Rothwell is more true to the original signal. Depends what you're after, as to which is "better". I use the Keeley, but also really dig the Rothwell after this smackdown. Hmm...making room on my Pedaltrain Pro as we speak.

  • Rothwell, hands down.

  • the rothwell is just a much better, more guitar-y sounding pedal.

  • told ya

  • The winner is........ The AYA Tokyo R Comp! WAT CHU KNO BOUT DAT!!!!!!

  • These comparisons are really nice. Hope you do so more soon.

  • Franz Ferdinand. Nice... B is still the winner. Without question.

  • Barber tone press against the love squeeze.

  • whoooo r u who who who who

  • Rothwell does what a compressor should do. Don't color the tone and add compression. Period.

  • keeley

  • Franz Ferdinand. Nice

  • Please please please demo the G&L ASAT Deluxe, I don't know whether to buy it or not and no where near me stocks them so I can't try them out!

  • still liked the Keeley more :D I actually liked that slight edge on the treble.

Definitely the Keeley added some more hair and volume. I think it was more noticeable now with the Tele, that the Rothwell remained more true to the original tone.

  • wow i really like the rothwell better

  • God I can't get over how hot that chick at the beginning is...

anyways, B did it for me, and as I thought it was the Rothwell.

Now I wanna see the Rothwell vs the Barber Tone Press!

  • i think these comparison reviews are the best!!!!

  • love squeeze ftw.

  • keeley is better!

  • love squeeze!

  • i like the keeley more. less harsh and apparent

  • I definitely like the Love Squeeze more.

  • thank you much andy :D

  • I definitely can hear that treble shift stuff, but really it is too miniscule for me. But then again, I went to sleep thinking my tone was amazing one day, and woke up the next, heard it again, and thought it sounded like fizz.

  • Homestar Runner for the win! :)

  • chyeaaa I guessed right for all three smackdowns :D

  • hell yeah
