  • @tubewun can you proof that?

  • Comment removed

  • That Vid is WAY To short !

  • Oh great...now I'm going to have more nightmares of monster waves towering over me xD

  • "Ach, a think we'rr going doon laddie"

  • Had it been 5 m higher there would be some serious trouble.

  • 25.6 meters high.

  • I have never witnessed large or freak/rogue waves like this, of course, but I have seen 20' foot waves on Lake Michigan during storms or squalls, when outgoing waves from near-shore, created by wind rushing from inland and being sucked or drawn into the storm front crash into slightly bigger and cresting waves coming towards the shoreline from the storm-front . It doesn't happen very often. but it is really awesome to see.

  • one of my biggest fears...

  • Going on Draupner on thursday :o)

  • Great job on the reconstruction.

... I would NOT wanna be in the path of a wave like that DX

  • incredible!

in the north see waves are not hyer than 15 m

  • @ghj9018 Ehm, that actually occurred in the North Sea..

  • Nature is awesome isnt it, even if its cgi'd later to show us just how devastating it can be. If thats how it was, thats wicked! Global warming? Its a freak guys, global warming aint, well actually we are the freaks.lol.

  • the first part of the cgi really had me thinking this was actual footage of the Draupner wave.

  • subseajimmy, as other have pointed out, didn't mention global warming at all. I think he was trying to point out that people who us oil regularly should spare a thought for the people who bring it to them. That's all. cag3171a - if you don't want people to have "shit fits" when you're giving them your "contrary opinion" perhaps you should refrain from calling his "Bullshit bullshit BULLSHIT!".

Regarding the video, awesome video, thanks for posting.

  • i'm pretty sure those freak waves have nothing to do with global warming. they've been around for ages i guess.

  • I didn't know you could blame global warming for the effects of non-linear behaviors in the ocean. But hey, what do I know, I guess you can blame global warming for anything these days.

  • The maniacs come in both colors, red and blue.

  • I agree. They should be pointed out and exposed regaurdless of color.

  • Try looks inwardly, your bile and hate seems to be flowing in equal quantities. neither will sell your point of view to others.

I'd be interested to know what experience you have in the environmental sector, or are you just sprouting your own regurgitated media feed crap?

  • Subseajimmy didn't mention global warming at all, he simply mentioned hydrocarbons (in a non-global-warming-related context), causing the people who have no reading comprehension skills and rely on buzzwords for their arguments to flip out and spew anger all over the comments section.

Regarding the video, kudos to the CGI team who created this excellent rendering.

  • @hitheremarvin well said, every video it seems no matter what it is ends with a flame war underneath it its pretty damn pathetic, i wonder how many hundreds of years of human time has been wasted arguing over the internet.

  • subseajimmy , you are an angry boat person leave us"landlubbers" alone thanks for the fuel but just remember we build your shit on"land" we grow your food on "land" and when your boat is holed where are you going to repair, it not in my drydock ya fuckin peanut

  • Take your head out of your ass before you speak to me, as I cant understand a word you are saying, clear a path through the dog shit that is blocking your though process. Its apparent that you do not have a nano spec of gumption floating between your ears. It was pointed out quite clearly that a good job was done on the video. Leave Al Gore out of this, he is an asshole you are quite correct, but what does that make you?

  • Why so much hostility, some of you have issues that require professional help, either that or you are just really boring people who have never left your lounge let alone your state line, go forbid you should leave your country. Relax take a deep breath and release that pent up load of bullshit that so often finds its way between your mind and mouth, blocking any kind of rational thought. Eat shit and die and keep your opinions to your self...

  • Good job on the video work, you are correct to point out the possibilities and for sure who would have film of a monster wave. I work in bad weather and this video makes people think. When you put gas in your car and all the other "normal" things hydrocarbons give to landlubbersand, me also, we should think every day joe is the one who brings it back to shore....Good Video

  • Wait a second! Please don't start with that global warming shit. It's bullshit bullshit BULLSHIT!!! Weather changes constantly. Good sometimes, and bad others. To suggest that we puny humans have some kind of demonsterable effect on climate is human arrogance at it's worst. Al Gore is a pathological, compulsive liar. And, one of the most narsacistic egomaniacs the world has ever known.

  • You're absolutely right!

  • it is fake in the sense that it is a RECONSTRUCTION, but it is based on the actual wave that woke the shipping world up to the dangers of rogue waves. learn your facts instead of swallowing your foot.

  • No shit sherlock.

  • Its a reconstruction video.

    Read the description you dumbfuck!

  • damn dude, learn to spell before replying to me.

  • jeez

  • 1 word wooooooooooooooow...

  • this is worse than a horror movie for me. it's like, water-surrounded-oil-rig-o-phobia. i'm so terrified just watching this. goosebumps, people. goosebumps.

  • lol.

  • @MissDisneyWorld ME TOO. I am fuckign scared of this video

  • @MissDisneyWorld Lituya Bay, Alaska. 1956. Look it up. And then come back and tell me that this is a big wave

  • @MissDisneyWorld yea i have a terrible fear of waves but also a fascination by them, and i love to torture myself with wave videos, this shit scared the hell out of me

  • There's not many accounts of huge freak waves for obvious reasons.

  • THat was done on a computer but it is a true story. They called it dooms day. Im being serious. It is horizon.

  • its fals

  • Can someone please give me the german text, with the translated version into english from

    0:25 - 0:30????

  • ...out of nothing...suddenly a monster wave appeared.....so high!!

  • thx:P

  • Bis plötzlich aus dem nichts, ein Monster herranrollt.

So hoch und so steil, wie es die Wissenschaftler niemals für möglich hielten.

When suddenly a monsterwave comes/appears from nowhere.

  • Bis plötzlich aus dem nichts, ein Monster herranrollt.

So hoch und so steil, wie es die Wissenschaftler niemals für möglich hielten.

When suddenly a monster wave appears from nothing. So high and steep that scientists did not think it was possible.

  • The actual documentary is on youtube. It's originally in English (made by BBC) and is called "freak wave". It's a really great documentary if you feel like watching it in its entirety.

  • yeah..I was thinkin' to meself..Ohh Sheeet! muthah phucka!! God damn..omfg. Made me feel really small

  • the first few seconds are real but this is a reconstructio as the big wave moment the whole rig is cg u can just tell :D but yeah it relly happened just how it looks

  • Come on now. How is that real? How didn't the camera filming it get wiped off the face of the earth?

If that's real then that is the biggest freaking wave I've ever seen.

  • its a CGI reconstruction

  • Yeah thanks. I went and saw the website and found out it was a real wave then put 2 and 2 together.

In any regard I guess it was real and it was a monster.

  • that was a rogue wave that hit the rig, and they can reach sizes over 100 feet tall and have the power to sink ocean liners. thats where they got the idea of the poseidon adventure from. these waves can appear in open sea on even a calm day. so many ships disapear because of waves like that, like the flying enterpprise that was hit by 2 rogue waves, first one cracked the ship in half, but the captain ordered the crew to tie the two halves together to where he could fill the gap with concrete.

  • then the secondrogue wave came the same day and sank the flying enterprise

  • @Symmetry44 the wave really did happen, this is a reconstruction

  • fucking huge!

  • It is a real event, the wave was 30 meters high, the normal hight that stormy night was 12 meters high waves :)

Just google it: "Draupner New years wave"

  • yeah man, i was alos there. but on this day there was no bratwurst becaus enobody was out. it was evacuated before. you idiot

  • It was real. Not fake. I know. I was there. We were eating our breakfast in the galley listening to the German narrator describe the waves when suddenly my morning bowl of bierwurst got completely soaked.

  • no. it's not a fake. it's reconstructed. which we already know. thanks.

  • Fairly obvious it is spliced footage. Comments confirmed it. Note the direction of the initial waves in the storm coming from L to R then the 'freak' wave appear to come directly at the camera. It's appears also not to be wind swept and but more like a surf wave.

  • yes, but the full movie said that these freak waves are completely different to normal sinus waves and they often take a different direction than the rest.

anyway, it's apparently a reconstruction. but a good one :)

  • i saw the prgramme on TV a few yrs ago

  • verdammte scheisse!!!!!!!!!!

  • This video is a reconstruction - it's not genuine footage of the New Year's Day wave. It is taken from a BBC Horizon program called 'Freak Wave', broadcast in 2002. If you google for 'horizon freak wave torrent', you can download and view a copy of the program yourself.

  • thanks for that.

  • Yes, thanks a lot. After research, I discoverd this wave had been measured, not filmed.

Still, a good reconstruction of what it could have been like, I guess.

  • thanks

  • I am singing a song about this kind of wave nowadays,"Tungalda". What fishermen from old times have always feared. Was quite nice to have seen it. I will definitely sing it with this wave in mind.

  • What is this video from ?

Is this real footage or just fancy graphics depecting what we call the "Draupner Wave" ? The wave is enormous, but taken so clearly from such an angle leads me to think this is a very good rendering of what might have been.

    Explanation, please ?

  • it's from a bbc documentery. translated into german.

it is real footage from what i know.

not 100% sure though. but, how could i?

if not -- then it's a real good computer rendering which pretty much fooled me ...

  • Thank you perliva.

I'm amazed at the size of this wave and have clearly never seen the lights of such.

Thanks for putting it up here.

  • Rogue wave´s stays up for a very short time before they go down again, thats why so few people have seen it. Its not like other waves that keeps going.

  • WHAT THE HELL...

  • I am so happy to be in my house when I see such a thing. Rogue waves can reach 30 meters! Only a few boats are said to resist them (Queen mary 2..)
