It's really hard to sing this song live, and I believe that Ian did a pretty good job. Not the most amazing of their performances, but it's one of my favorite songs by them and I think it was still good.
Great song. Ian trully is a great front man , he's got charisma. I've seen the Bunnymen live on stage Ian captures your attention. He doesn't need to dance or jump around on stage just standing there is enough, he fills the entire stage floor.
I agree with DianaDiazSinger...Ian just shredded his voice over the years. Chain smoking didnt help either among other things. I first saw them in 1980 during the camo thing and his voice was powerful. Awesome. In my opinion,by 1984 the damage was becoming more apparent. Remember also that 1980-81 was the time they were trying to prove themselves as a major force and they did not dissapoint.
DianaDiazSinger - Ya I hear ya... but when one smokes, and drinks like there is no tomorrow, there is no way you can try to intercede in progress and the evolution of self mutilation which sounds quite soulful.
i have bought the vinyl album in the 80's and every day i get more respect for these guys. Great artists and the album is stille better than it was in 1985
I saw this on " The Tube" just b4 it was released and loved it, however -when it was finally "cut"- when it came out - I was so surprised he decided 2 do this with the low notes--probably a professional decision, in so much as u can't sing this(version) 2 many times without damaging your vocal chords-==You have 2 cruise sometime if, you are going 2 sustain your singing career!!!!-Probably a wise choice in the end.
They may have recorded multiple takes and the version with him singing lower sounded the best. But I do really enjoy this version. It's not so much a matter of cruising as it is that Ian could sometimes be a bit pitchy as he was here. If he'd had some vocal training he could have done it with ease.
I'm sorry for all the swear words i've used to desciribe today's hip hop youth. Kind of makes me think there's still hope. NO fuck it there's no hope.
Lol the audience just stands there- but what could they do? If these men had somehow been transported into the Roman era with amplification, they surely would be worshiped as gods.
I love this song. it really brings you back to the eighties .(when i last heard it ).Its a real classic . mind you i prefare the recorded version with deeper register i can tell you with this song i was in another world . being a classical musician myself. thanks for the song.
Some folk upset here, in bad taste. Whoy, why, look at a posting and slag it? Maybe you're right - only history will tell. But you look - hassled, bitter. It's self destructive.
ok now, WTF is the blond guy with the ugly hairvut saying at the beginning?!? I only got the ''Echo And The Bunnymen'' part of his words. Great song by a great band though
U2 had established their style long before this track was recorded. However, U2's drummer, Larry Mullen Jr., LOVED Ocean Rain. I've read a few interviews with him in which he gushes about the drumming by Pete on that album. Awesome.
This may be my favorite song on Ocean Rain. Except for the title track, of course. :)
man this is great, great music!! They came to Houston not long ago and i fucking missed them and i am still kicking myself!! from a Texas E&TB fan!!!!!
In them days, Ian McCulloch came across as an excited innocent with wide eyes, and potential. Nowadays he's a potentially, cynical, laconic, done it all before has been. His saving grace is Will Sergeant. Together they are the equivalent of the Beatles survivors. Echo and the Bunnymen thrive. And I, for one, am glad.
I love this man. He's gorgeous and his talent brights.I love his voice in the performance. This guys admire THE DOORS and they are as a consequence influenced by them but that's not bad at all. They shine on their own and they are able to make you tremble as well as feeling explosive emotions through your body.Ian I am in love with you....

Voice is like a somewhat more pathetic Jim Morrison.
Saw Bunnymen in Stockholm ,in their heyday , and the whole concert they ( Bunnymen ) did their damndest to emulate Doors . Even played most of Door´s hit songs . But whaddahell , great group anyways .Though not quite original ...
Macs always been a little tone deaf. Hes great in the studio..and sometimes live. Hes favorite singer seen Bunnymen more times than i can count. Hope he uses personal moniters next live show.
Nah, not tone deaf, just didn't really know how to control his voice. It changed in leaps and bounds from Crocodiles to the last album. If he'd had some vocal training, it would have made things easier for him. Really I'm a vocal teacher and I used to sing opera.
i think he had to have sold his soul to the devil! He's sooooooooooooooooo goood

@bookwormgal1996 Also it's just the chorus that Ian had some problems with, everything else was perfect :) <3
bookwormgal1996 1 year ago
@bookwormgal1996 It's not actually a hard song to sing. He was singing it up an octave in the chorus!!
joydivided23 1 year ago
@joydivided23 I know, that was what really went wrong here. And you're also right about it not being such a hard song to sing.
bookwormgal1996 1 year ago
@joydivided23 Unless of course, you sing it an octave higher then your supposed to haha
