Anybody notice the similarities between the '51 and '62 Giants pennant? They come from way behind to finish in a tie for first place with the Dodgers to force a best of three playoff. They split the first two and the Giants are behind in game three going to the 9th.In '51 Bobby Thompson hit a three run homer to win,but in '62 the Giants rallied dor four runs to win.The Dodgers had Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, but I can't remember what they did.
This is what baseball is really about. No divisions,no wildcards, true baseball. The top team from each league. The Giants and Dodgers had a playoff, but it was to break a tie for the National League pennant. They were counted as regular season games. The World Series was just as exciting or it might end up like the '51 series after the Bobby Thompson homerun,or game 7 of the '75 series between the Reds and Red Sox.It just wouldn't have been talked about.Today's fan can't understand that kind of drama.
The 1962 world series had the greatest players in the game were the Giants had Willie Mays,Willie McCovey,Orlando Cepeda,Juan Marichal 4 Hall of fame players on one team not to mention Felipe Alou,Jack Sanford,Billy Pierce,Harvey Kuenn,Jim Davenport,Stu Miller all allstars and the Yankees of course had Mantle and Maris and Howard and Skowron, Ford,Tresh,Bouton,Terry. This series could of gone either way it was the most dramatic series of all time coming down to the final out to see who wins.
mays fell 5 votes short of winning his second MVP up to that point---he later won in 1965 when at age 34 hit 52 home runs--all willie did in 1962 was hit .304 with 49 home runs and 141 RBIS and lead the giants to the series---he also hit the winning home run in houston that year in game 162 which the giants had to in to force a tie---no justice sometimes
I remember this series. Though we were Yankee fans, living in NYC, we loved the Giants. (the enemy of your enemy (Dodgers) is your friend. But who couldn't. In an age when many teams were still basically all or 90% white, all the stars of the Giants, M, Mc, OC, the Alou bros, JM were black, and so many Latinos. There was something about that during the civil rights movement era. Go Giants 2010!
This was the Giants' and Yankees' 7th meeting in the World Series against eachother. The two teams may have their 8th possible W.S. meeting in 2010 if the G-Men wins the 2010 NLCS and the Yanks win the 2010 ALCS.
this was a day game during the week and they made an announcement at my grade school during lunch in the cafeteria...i can still hear the principal say..".yankees one...(and a long pause)...giants zero..." and we all groaned...when you are 11 or 12 years old and baseball is everything..that was a crusher...if you live in the east coast and you are 11 or 12 then you can find out the winner at 1:00 am when the game ends...
@UNDERGROUND2000 We got to watch it on TV that day in school. Our 5th grade teacher was a huge Giants fan and he brought his TV into class for the game. B&W of course. When Willie Mac hit the ball we all knew it was the game winner and then watched in horror as BR caught it. It was hit so hard he had to fight to keep from dropping it even using both hands. Breaks my heart to this day. But I got faith and I got hope.
Orange & Black till I die! GO GIANTS!!! Beat Philly!!
Loved that high kick Marichal had. He also won 20 or more games 6 out 7 seasons (preceded by an 18-11 year)...not too shabby. When Sandy Koufax retired at 30, he had three 20 win seasons; meanwhile by 30, Marichal had five 20 win seasons. Btw, I'm not taking anything away from Koufax- he was great. (I just think there was a little subtle racism going on...JMHO).
Some people worry thanTim Lincenum (sp?) will hurt his arm and end up like Koufax- a great, but brief, carrer...I don't have an opinioon on that..not yet anyway. Thanks for posting!
@CairoKid lincecum is not a fastball pitcher. he probably throws in the low 90s on his best day. he relies more on the breaking ball. koufax threw in the high 90s most of the time.
@CairoKid - the training methods are much better than when Koufax played. They' were so afraid to give him a chance because he was very wild in the beginning. Some years later, someone told Koufax some pointers and he stuck to it and started the magical years of his career. Unfortunately, while playing his 1st sport, basketball, in the off season for the fun of it he ran into the backboard post and really whacked his elbow. Koufax says that injury is what screwed up his elbow. Lincecum 4 ever!
no doubt, an immortal on the mound, Kirok. I wish people would mention him more when they talk of the greats of pitching, I'm an Orioles fan, but SF had a lot of greats back then- Marichal, Bobby Bonds, Orlando Cepeda, Matty Alou (whose best yrs. where w/ the Pirates), Willie McCovey, etc...
@CairoKid -yes he was. Too bad he had that incident where he struck John Roseboro with his bat. He had to wait several yrs to get admitted into the Hall because of it. Giants were ahead of the times with so many good Hispanic players

Dude, grow up. The memories of '88 are old now. You guys haven't done ANYTHING since. Lol, you always finish your comments with the same crap, F SF, F you, and F the Giants. Get a life, you prick. Your words hurt SO much coming from an anoynmous keyboard! Psssh.
Listen up, I respect that whoever posted this video doesn't appreciate harsh language and behavior like a 12 yr. old, (which you probably are,) so I'm not gonna cuss back. But your comment makes no sense. You say the SAME things over and over. Get a life, and a pair. When's the last time LA even went to the WS? You guys are a mediocre, overrated team.
What a brave person you are, spewing your invectives from the anonymous safety of a Youtube page! The issue, of course, is not your freedom, which I certainly respect, but rather your abuse of it, which is merely sad and foolish. People who do the sort of thing you are doing tend to be angry, pathetic cowards. I pity you. Let me express my sincere hope that you will use this experience to become a more mature and respectable person.
Thank you for your ever so polite commentary. My children use this computer, too, and they are sure to be enlightened and educated by your sophisticated allusions to fellatio and sexual intercourse. May you someday find a more decent mode of expressing yourself.
Well, my dear Miles ... It seems your capacity for civilized, thoughtful expression perfectly matches that of RowdyRod. Perhaps you should go bowling together. I am at a loss to understand why people like you are stimulated to obscenity by the very thought of someone who would like the world to be just a trifle more polite. Go wash your mouth out, and find someone else to pick on.
And furthermore, hear this: I have written an award-winning book. I sponsor a poor kid in Asia. I read for the blind. I want you to know that I have no use whatever for your snot-nosed insults. Go shinny up a thistle.
Ralph Terry was the pitcher who gave up Mazeroski's home run in game 7 in 1960. Two years later he pitched a gem in game 7 to win it for the Yankees. I guess he shook off the cobwebs!
i remember that series (that year;) like yesterday. Was, am Dodger fan; that 62 playoff and that 9th inning performance by Stan Williams still irks me today
Great stuff. I was a SF and NY Giant fan and a New York Yankee fan. During the series my heart was torn apart. I bet a little momey on the Yankees, but till this day I'm still sad the Giants lost. Thanks for showing this.
