What I'm asking is, do you think, if you were told to look at a group of 100 people, where 75% were English, and 25% Welsh, that you would be able to pick out the Welshmen only by physical characteristics? I wouldn't say completly german because the anglo saxons come from North holland (Frisia), South Jutland, German regions of Angeln and saxony and south denmark, The tribe's from these regions were the Jutes, Saxons, Frisii, Angles, When they came over the angles and the saxons proberly gradually overtook the Jutes and the frisii as there is not much evidence left of the jutes and frisii, Angles still have evidence left today such as the main area of angle dominance (East Anglia).

@fitledge101 Most English people have some shade of brown hair not blonde. Blue eyes in the whole of Britain runs at just over 50% so a pretty large chunk have brown or hazel. I read that British people who have Anglo Saxon heritage usually have the R1a DNA mark. This probably came from Germanic Europe but originally from what is now Ukraine. Does this mean that the Saxons and Vikings who came to Britain had Slavic DNA???

R1a1a is common in Scandinavian populations especially in Norway and areas known to have been settled heavily by Vikings (Orkneys/Iceland). The 'original' britons were mainly Basque in origin. So basically most people who are ethnically English are a mix of N German and Danish.
I am very proud to be Anglo Saxon. The other Northern peoples- German, Danish etc are our cousins. The Welsh, Scots etc do not feel like kin to me, but strangers. The others should go back to their own lands, where they fit in. This is Anglaland.

IMHO there's a misconception: the English language is factually a derivate of the Frisian language. The Saxon language has little to do with the Frisian language. So why do scientists believe the Saxons invaded England and disregard the fact that the English language is very narrow related to the Frisian language? @JohnMatrix89 .Virtually every study since has pretty much said the same thing save one which worked on 'statistical probabilities' and seemed to say that the Welsh and Scots were mostly 'saxons' too! The latest I heard of was an Irish study last year which said Germanic input in england may be as low as 20%.
@sonofherne I am only aware of 3 studies; the Weale, Capelli, and the currently ongoing Bodmer study. The first two studies are not that reliable because they used bikini haplotypes. Based on the high input of I1 chromosomes these two studies found is good evidence of a large Germanic input. Bodmer released early results in 2007 which showed England to be mostly Germanic especially in the eastern half. The west appeared to be mostly 50/50.

The English are a mix, certainly. When you have an eye for spotting racial types & you travel round the country you still see dominant types in certain areas; as you would expect S.E England is Germanic, but the Celtic type was itself hardly different from the Germanic - it varied from the short dark Welsh type to the tall blonde Irish or Highlander. Also remember that the Celts inhabited Germany before the arrival of Germanic tribes - they would've mixed here too; do you kill a beautiful woman?
First off most english are of teutonic descent on the fathers side but on the maternal lines it's mostly celtic, they took the women and ditched the men. Regardless, it's teutonic or runic, or scandanavian, germans are just as mixed with slavs and celts as the brit's. English aren't germans, germans and english are sister peoples not father and son.

No, Angeln is in Slesvig which was always part of Denmark until 1864, where it was occupied and stolen by the Germans. Later - 1920 half of it returned to Denmark, but unfortunately and very unjustly so not Angeln and not Dannevirke (defensive wall). You have got it all wrong ;-)
If you compare D and G to English, anyone can see that modern (!) E and D are much closer related than G & E. Angles spoke a more Northern Germanic tongue unlike the Saxons (West Germanic)

@ThothWisdom Geographic features in particular tend to be stubborn to change over time, i.e. the newcomers adopt the words of the natives for certain land features. But you don't see that, you see a complete renaming of most features and settlements. I think the most likely scenario is large groups of Germanic tribes did settle in a depopulated region and were more successful at farming. As a result they bred more and became the predominant population.

This is the history of the world. This happened basically everywhere so the Germanic people shouldn't feel ashamed. If we use the modern names for the countries they came from, the Saxons, Franks and Frisians were German-Dutch, the Angles were southern Danish, and Jutes were northern Danish.

I wouldn't say completly german because the anglo saxons come from North holland (Frisia), South Jutland, German regions of Angeln and saxony and south denmark, The tribe's from these regions were the Jutes, Saxons, Frisii, Angles, When they came over the angles and the saxons proberly gradually overtook the Jutes and the frisii as there is not much evidence left of the jutes and frisii, Angles still have evidence left today such as the main area of angle dominance (East Anglia).

R1a1a is common in Scandinavian populations especially in Norway and areas known to have been settled heavily by Vikings (Orkneys/Iceland). So it is thought the Vikings were the ones who brought most of R1a to the British Isles.

This guy harps on about the "anglo saxons" wiping out the celts. But there has been NO proof of that. We don't even know. And I suspect if that did indeed happen wouldn't there be records of it? Hmmm.

The Celts in what is now Britain invited kings from Northern Germany to fight off picts in what is now SCotland. Then basically they saw how fertile the lands were in England and took them. Then later the Danes invaded and settled in NW England. In 1066 the Normans invaded but there wasn't a mass migration. Pratically it's correct to say that the native White English population are mainly Germanic, descendants of the Anglo-Saxon group. However they're not fully Gremanic, bacause we have to put in consideration that there was a Celtic people prior the Germanic. Some Celts were wiped-out, others were integrated( especially women) and mingled with the dominating group.

IMHO there's a misconception: the English language is factually a derivate of the Frisian language. The Saxon language has little to do with the Frisian language. So why do scientists believe the Saxons invaded England and disregard the fact that the English language is very narrow related to the Frisian language? @JohnMatrix89 .Virtually every study since has pretty much said the same thing save one which worked on 'statistical probabilities' and seemed to say that the Welsh and Scots were mostly 'saxons' too! The latest I heard of was an Irish study last year which said Germanic input in england may be as low as 20%.

@sonofherne I am only aware of 3 studies; the Weale, Capelli, and the currently ongoing Bodmer study. The first two studies are not that reliable because they used bikini haplotypes. Based on the high input of I1 chromosomes these two studies found is good evidence of a large Germanic input. Bodmer released early results in 2007 which showed England to be mostly Germanic especially in the eastern half. The west appeared to be mostly 50/50.

The English are a mix, certainly. When you have an eye for spotting racial types & you travel round the country you still see dominant types in certain areas; as you would expect S.E England is Germanic, but the Celtic type was itself hardly different from the Germanic - it varied from the short dark Welsh type to the tall blonde Irish or Highlander. Also remember that the Celts inhabited Germany before the arrival of Germanic tribes - they would've mixed here too; do you kill a beautiful woman?

First off most english are of teutonic descent on the fathers side but on the maternal lines it's mostly celtic, they took the women and ditched the men. Regardless, it's teutonic or runic, or scandanavian, germans are just as mixed with slavs and celts as the brit's. English aren't germans, germans and english are sister peoples not father and son.

No, Angeln is in Slesvig which was always part of Denmark until 1864, where it was occupied and stolen by the Germans. Later - 1920 half of it returned to Denmark, but unfortunately and very unjustly so not Angeln and not Dannevirke (defensive wall). You have got it all wrong ;-)
If you compare D and G to English, anyone can see that modern (!) E and D are much closer related than G & E. Angles spoke a more Northern Germanic tongue unlike the Saxons (West Germanic)

The Saxons made the modern day English people Germanic just as the Romans made French people or Spanish people Latin through cultural domination not through genetics.Dna is not a silver bullet in either side of the debate but their is next to no Archeological evidence to support a population replacement in modern day England by people from Germany or Denmark etc etc no evidence of a catastrophic mass migration or proof of genocide.Most English people have DNA from their Ancient Briton ancestors

@ThothWisdom I agree that the history is a much more complex scenario than these popular science books would have us believe. As for Archeology absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. You have to remember after the collapse of a civilization, like the Roman, you do have significant population decline. Why would a Latin/Briton speaking people give most of the geographic features and settlements Anglo-Saxon or Norse names? Continued...

@ThothWisdom Geographic features in particular tend to be stubborn to change over time, i.e. the newcomers adopt the words of the natives for certain land features. But you don't see that, you see a complete renaming of most features and settlements. I think the most likely scenario is large groups of Germanic tribes did settle in a depopulated region and were more successful at farming. As a result they bred more and became the predominant population.

@JohnMatrix89 .I also believe there was depopulation,possibly due to famine or plague. However, I think there are more celtic place names around that you think, at least in the south-west. All the rivers for one,many hills and mountains.

The English are English they are not German...English is a unique identity that evolved in Britain ..Germans are people who were born and raised in Germany and are culturally German.This is ignorant to say the least though as the other fellow below eluded too.the Britons of modern day England became the English through cultural domination as the Britons in Wales became the Welsh.In France the Gauls became Latin culturally through Roman domination.That does not mean the French are Italians

Mass graves of slaughtered Britons have been found (though not enough to draw the conclusion of a mass slaughter of ALL the Britons, and unless every square inch of Britain is excavated we'll never have the answer) But you only have to look at Brittany in France to see that the Britons were certainly fleeing something terrible. @0TheSeeker There is a difference in DNA the further East you go in Britain. Gildas wrote in the 6th century that the tribal home of the Angles (Angeln Germany) "is desolate and unpopulated to this day"......Where did those people go? They are still here to this day,They are the English.

No doubt and it makes perfect sense that the more east you go the more you will probably find people with ancestry from these Germanic tribes it is a clinal.Ancient /Medieval writers are shady,they handcuffed by their own possible biases,exaggerations and downright inaccurate information.I don't believe everything Herodotus ever wrote down either he has several nick names and one is the" Father of Lies".Gildas writings created a national origin" myth" not a reality.

Actually the majority of Brits are descended from the priginal settlers who came here after the ice age. This has been proved by DNA research. The Saxon invasions replaced the ruling class,not the population.

The British Isles project, which is ongoing to this day, has shown the Anglo-Saxon elements to be dominant in England.

.It could be imagined that certain area's of England probably has a predominate population from Germanic tribes who settled in certain but the overall population of England is clearly up for debate..and i myself would have a hard time believing that the pre historic population was totally or mainly replaced England wide.The Saxons for example acted as a ruling class similar to how the Romans did .

Nowday the english are decendent of immigrants of Ireland and Wales, who are not germanic. They don´t look like germans They look like french or spanish , but no like germans.
It is a shame, that the real english are very few.

What do you mean 'real English'? You don't have to be of Germanic descent to be 'real English'. Few English are purely of Anglo-Saxon descent. Since Roman times Britain has been a country of mixed ethnicities. Today, there are Asian English, Black English, Slavic English etc. all of whom pay taxes to the UK government and are patriotic about being English/British.
It is wrong to deny that they are truely English.

They may reside here, but that does not make them English. And also to be English you have to be proud of England, you can not be a proud Englishman if your singing the praises of whatever other nation they hailed from aswel

@Tlevids They are not truely English at all. In my mind someone whose family have been here a long time can be English. Being English is not something you can just walk into and claim just because you live here/born here. English is in the blood so it has to be inherited from one family member to another. All those people you claim to be English? They are just slavs living in England or Blacks living in England, same Asians. They take no pride from St George because its not theirs!

This is the history of the world. This happened basically everywhere so the Germanic people shouldn't feel ashamed. When a racial group overpopulates, they spill out unto other region and fuse with the people. I know for a fact that the Germans also went in other regions, like Greece and Portugal. Some surnames in the Mediterranean are of German origin. I'm not German, by the way.

Even the nazi knew that English and German had common ancestors. So they hoped to ally England in the first place to make them part of the nordic race - the mystical Herrenrasse.
Interesting would be to see how English and German immigration to america spread that genes to make most white Americans as well carring those saxxon genes.

Frisian isn't known as the twin language of english for nothing. yes, all the most adventurous, warrior saxons left german and came to england leaving the weaker saxons in germany. the strong anglo saxons in england saw they were on to a good thing and then kicked out the weaker anglo saxons and they went to america =P

@NottinghamForest22 The new settlers were a mixture of people from north Germany, Denmark and northern Holland. Most were Saxons, Angles and Jutes. There were some Franks and Frisians too. If we use the modern names for the countries they came from, the Saxons, Franks and Frisians were German-Dutch, the Angles were southern Danish, and Jutes were northern Danish.
