check out the mona bone jakon lp. the drummer is Harvey Burns... which is whoever was playing drums that day... it is also a slang term for a penis that got... well... any of a variety of veneral diseases. heard this from an english guy who claims he played drums on the lp
that central couplet is so bitter, grim, angry, implacable - Stevens was pretty young to feel so strongly; it takes some real pain, grief, desperation, anger, to put that kind of attitude into a man -
According to Stevens, the inspiration for the title was a name he created to describe his penis: ""Mona Bone Jakon" is another name for my penis. It's the name I give it. It's not some sort of secret vocabulary, it's just something I made up."
I have been looking over the last year, I too have not seen it posted. Thanks for sure! No one I know remembers it. I got this album free when it was released, as I think it did not sell that well. Sort of obscure at the time, although he had some hits. This was his "off mainstream album" at the time. Some of this was still underground music, not played on big stations yet. FM started as underground, mumbling offbeat DJs, less FCC attention. Cool! Thanks for the Memories!
Mona Bone Jakon is his best album, before the record company pushed him to write more commercial, less brilliant songs and albums. This song is fantastic.
@TheGuitarManEIRE It is, but then it turns out the one I was actually thinking of was "Miles From Nowhere." But hey, anything from Cat Stevens around those times has to be great!
Got this on vinly its amazing

"Definatly an under rated album." It's certainly my favorite Cat Stevens album, although Tea for the Tillerman comes really close in my book.

yea, your right there. Tea for the Tillerman was very gud aswell! On the road to find out would be one of my favorites from it.
TheGuitarManEIRE 2 years ago
@TheGuitarManEIRE You've probably seen it already, but there's a great live version of "On the Road..." from the mid-70s on YOUTUBE.
