I agree with this dude--you don't need tomatoes in a really meaty ragu.  Save them for the dishes where they really get a chance to shine--simple red sauce, tossed in pasta with olives, peppers and garlic, lighter sea food dishes and cold salads. All the meat flavor (and cooking time) in a ragu bolognese is going to wash them out and take away all their magic. Ragu is what tomato puree was made for.
