a rat bike is built up over many years of use and travel, instead of spending hundreds getting the specific parts for the bike to make it look nice, you go to a scrapyard and grab the first thing you see that would do the job, repeat this over a few years, and add modifications to make the bike suitable for yourself and how you work (bags for stuff, little souvenirs from your travels) and you have a rat bike! a standard bike is boring but all ratbikes have huge stories behind them :)

Rat bike is too broad of a term now, its kinda used to cover a slew of alternative, dirty or weird bike styles. I have a half-ass rat that is half rapairs made cheaply, and half me changing it's looks intentionally. It's just my bike. 5 stars.

That being said I don't think this should be classified as a rat bike, its a trash bike. rat bikes are usually pieced together from previouly recked bikes and anything else that a builder can get his hands on. Usually rat bikes are crudely modified with hand tools and shit. This guy just stuck a bunch of crap on an old Harley.
I have to dis agree the world champ rat bike rider lives in ohio and his bike is pretty much the same thing. /He has won awards all over the world in bike shows. There are different classifications of "rat" bikes like the one here is a basic rat. then you have the survival rat is the type wich you are speaking of. then the rat rod these bikes are low often chopped and usualy clutter free. Alot of bike shows dont classify different rat classes they just put them all together wich is a shame.
My rat is a 1956 Columbia 3 star bicycle with a springer fork. Dead rat on front fender! It stinks too. Loaded with expensive Americana bullshit from 1833 to present. It is the only bicycle that has won a bike show/s against motosickles. Sociably Clussy is his name and he stinks!
