  • This song makes me want to become a junkie!

  • Awesome Lou Reed tune.Bowie makes it his own.

  • i like both the version, david and lou are two music gods.

  • Best version ever

  • fantastic ! first time i listen to it

  • The version he did live on the Bowie at the Beeb cds even better.

  • yes, yes, yes, bowie. add your glam fabulousness to the heroin drone of lou's version

  • man i remeber this version in almost famous

  • @dubesrbent "crazy."

  • People should have to take a quiz to decide whether they are a moron or not before being able to rate a video.

  • Better than original !!!

  • @sadez2001 check yourself fool

  • @snovak356 u__u f.y

  • 2:15

  • One of the greatest artists of all time covering another of the greatest artists ever. Amazing.

  • This is the one.

  • Great version! Just added it to my favorites.

  • I first loved this song since I heard it on "Almost Famous"

  • @lilmissglentoran me too

  • What a freakin great classic one 4 sure...from: Rockin Robin Rox (Rx3)

  • the album version on nico is better but bowie does it pretty good

  • amazing

  • classic!!

  • Yeah, I've been Waiting to hear for this version for a long time now,1st heard this version at an old friend Paul's place (Huge Bowie Fanatic) -Yes it's RAW but that's the beauty of this-sounds like I'm right next to the stage /Rono (Mick Ronson) with his off the cuff Soloing, nevr knew what he was gonna throw at ya-Love that hint of WahWah Pedal at the Solo's start- YEAH/ RIP Mick Ronson

  • My mom went to this. I remember her telling me about all the bands that used to play at the santa monica civic center. I grew up in venice. cool song

  • Mick Ronson made guitar sound amazing

  • I love Bowie, and this is very good, but sill not as good as the original

  • @HalaMadrid777 Are you talking original Lou Reed?

  • yeah, the Velvet Underground one

  • Whoa... Dude...! Ya know yer rock and roll.! How's life in Israel? I'm in Santa Barbara, CA...Michael Jackson's Neverland is just down the road...though I'm not a fan myself.

  • Thanks! I love The Velvet Underground, actually I just bought the Peel Slowly and See box set!

It's great in Israel, very nice country.

  • love this version

  • @ejectthetape yep, i love that version too!

  • stunning . . . reed couldn't sing it just like this . . . and bowie could never ever sing it like reed . . . Its a beautiful thing

  • bowie+ the velvet underground= friggin amazingness

  • Bowie has done some good music. To be, Bowie has a bit, not all but a bit of good songs, but they are really good, like "space oddity" and "rebel rebel".

Velvet Underground was inovative, had a unique sound, and was definatly not even closely as commercially succesful as Bowie, if at all really. Velvet went mainly on the talent of their members, Bowie was good, but his look was more important to a lot of those mainstream people than his music.

  • You think the audience had any idea what song this was, and who Bowie was covering?

  • A few people in the audience might of known what song Bowie was covering at that '72 show.Maybe only the people who understood the '70-''74 glitter era connections of groups like Bowie's Spiders,Mott the Hoople,Lou Reed,T-Rex,Iggys Raw Power,etc....

  • I agree this is the best!! I first had it on the Soft In The Middle bootleg (Kornyfone). Must get the new one, soon, I think it's a limited edition!!

  • i agree.I had SOFT IN THE MIDDLE bootleg in the early 70s with this version and Bowie and Ronson rock the HELL out of this Velvet cut.Fantaktik in its own right.

  • when I first heard this song mick ronson's

beckish type guitar playing took my face

right off.. loved it then.. love it now

    miss you like mad mick.

  • It is the best version of the song ever!

  • this is not the best version of the song, gotta go with the version on velvet underground live

  • Don't forget the version on Bowie At The Beeb

  • Quite right this is a cracking version also.

  • Yes. siree, & don't forget the other Beeb session which wasn't included on the CDs. Not to mention the funny studio version from 1970 - It's on Bowiezone (if that site is still goin)

  • The best version ever,Bowie and the Spiders tearing the shit out of it.The whole '72 Santa Monica show kills. Its hard to believe for some people that Bowie ever sounded like this because the Bowie/Spiders live era was so short lived. Like 1971-1973

  • @frankty67 you mean 69-73, yes even though they technically weren't the spiders until late 1970. just saying.

  • @MrMAHBOI1

And you're absolutely right. The Spiders probably did begin around Space Oddity '69 and end around Diamond Dogs'74 or The Spiders Last Stand July 1973. How could someone change so much? Man were we pisses off......

  • this is the best version . . . but one has to admire reeds songwriting . . . the lyrics have a beautiful laconic, conversational style

  • it makes more sense for Lou Reed to sing it with Velvet UnderG. he lived through the 60s and 70s in NewYork with pushers, pimps, and gangs roaming every corner. And him singing about the pusher he was meeting. (i understand that Bowie was an addict, but when he could afford to be an addict, he never had to suffer in such a rough part of town in his life.)

Also, the Reed song Perfect Day was about the day he got through a whole day without taking heroin with his GirlF

  • oh, i have no doubt Bowie helps out his friends, but i know he is a HUGE Lou Reed fan and just loved that guy and his work.

for instance; if you listen to the rhythm and tones of "Queen Bitch" carefully, it really sounds like something Lou himself would probably write.

  • @astronomius Oh yeah definitly.Queen Bitch is Lou Reed type vision.

  • don't even think about it, luv, i made myself almost invisible (in plain sight) at this point...

anyway, i ordered a copy online (and then i cancelled it, and i'll eventually re-order another one)

i'm VERY excited about the release!

but, i'm not sure i agree with the reason you gave why Bowie covered this song...

  • go to my latest vid for the external link embedded in the description or visit amazon's web site and type in David Bowie and Santa Monica. It will be an official release very soon.

  • your wish is coming true. After 36 years, Bowie's most famous concert is being released (officially). Before that, only bootlegs.

  • Actually, EMI released the full concert on CD way back in the 1990's. I'm just hoping the new release will be void of the radio station's sound guy panning from left to right like a kid with a new toy.

    :)

  • My op only, he was trying to help out friend Lou Reed by re-recording some of his stuff, just like he helped out Iggy. I'm sure Bowie did love the stuff he was recording though such as Waiting for the Man. He is releasing a high quality version of the Santa Monica concert finally - after 36 years!

  • Best version ever recorded! Too bad the quality isn't the best.

  • Bowie covered this song several times, mnust have been one of his favorites...

anyway, notice that he sounds drugged out here; his voice is PERFECT for singing this song.

i think this is quite possibly the best version of this song.

  • ese señor se cagó la canción de velvet underground.. simplista normalopata

  • how good is the sound!!!!my god.

  • I know exactly what he's talking about as most of you do. Lou Reed understood the drug game. Back in the day when I did coke.I always would bitch because the" man" was always late. This is a helluva song...until tomorrow then thats another time. Yer Lou and crew had it down pat.....

  • think this from the film soundtrack "almost famous"

  • but it is on "Live - Santa Monica '72", offered online... i see you already knew that, though. it got GREAT reviews, too! MUST HAVE for the Bowie fan.

    sorry i'm such an idiot.

    *smiles*

  • I didn't see astromius's earlier post - d'uh! sorry :)

  • sadly, it isn't on "Bowie Live", i checked; that was his first official recording of his concerts in 1974.

thanks again for posting, this version is rare.

  • WOW! i have this on my "Ziggy Soundtrack" and "Bowie At The Beeb", but this is the raw-est Bowie version i've heard so far!

thank you SO much for posting this!

i love how Bowie rearranges his songs; so many ways to enjoy them.

boy, he and The Spiders tearing it up! Ronson at his usual majestic, and i can finally hear Woody's drums clearly shine on a live recording!

    was this on "Bowie Live"?
