I always loved Rolf Smedvig...when I was a kid, my teachers would mock him. His solo albums were incredible..especially his Hummel Concerto.. and to be honest, this section sounds better than the NY Phil.
I think that Rolf's worst decision ever (other than the obvious one with the masterclass) was to leave BSO. Sure, Empire Brass was popular in the 80's, but now it is just down the drains, in my opinion. I think he could have been one of the greatest if he had stayed.
This is the best performance I know. In answer to a silly remark that the orchestra had trouble following him, let me remind you that every professional orchestral player can probably play the piece by heart. Lenny builds it up and up into a jubilant coda. The BSO loved him. The Bolivian orchestra has far too many players. They can make a lot of noise, but they play nowhere in the category of the BSO or other great orchestras.
For a breathtaking performance of this same section check out Dudamel with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra (although I can't find that perf. on here anymore,it's not the one that is still on here). This guy is destined for greatness! Such miraculous playing and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck as they reach the final apotheosis.Someone please bring it back!
The BSO are in awesome form in this clip but my God how hard they have to work to follow Bernstein's histrionics out the front! He builds brilliantly but still not sure about that dead slow dragged-out ending tho. When he was really good he was peerless (his Gershwin with the NYPO/Columbia SO is perfection!) but sometimes he's just over the top!!
The Sym.4,5,Vln.Cto, Andante Cantabile DVD on DG was only released last month. Bet you 10-1 that the DVD IS in the Symphony Hall souvineer shop, and you probably talked to someone who just did not have a clue. But better to buy from amazon just the same, since the Symphony Shop nearly always charges more than list price for practically every CD + DVD they offer (I live 2 1/2 miles up the street.)
The audio to the entire concert is available from one Nathan Brown, Box 94673, Albuqerque, NM.87199 Concert is from 721/'74. First half Copland conducted a handful of his own works. The DVD I mention of this BSO Tanglewood Tchaik.5 also contains Sym. 4, Violin Cto. with Boris Belkin, and the Andante Cantabile. All are with New York Phil from 1975. DVD is on DG label.
Dear laury198: If you want the audio to the entire concert, or portions of, I know how you can obtain it. Unfortunately, the video portion is not currently available. Get back to me if interested in the audio. hootenhtn
Thank you Hootenhtn: Thank you so much, I would love the audio! It is a beautiful piece. But . . obviously the video exists, I just do not know where. I have contacted symphony hall, wgbh that telecast these concerts, I cannot seem to make any progress. Someone has it to post it on youtube.
For the DVD, just go to amazon and click on the movies option. Type in Bernstein Tchaikovsky and the DVD will pop up. It is on DG label. An additional DVD of Sym. 6 with NY Phil. live in Australia will also show, this to from 1975. That one is on Kulter video.
Look at the passion he puts in the work- it is a piece of art. It is brilliant to listen to and I am captivated by his passion. I only wish that I were old enough to see a concert like this.
Did a little more research on this. This is BSO at Tanglewood, July 21 1974. Aaron Copland himself also conducted his Appalachian Spring Suite during the first half of concert.
Help, I am trying to find the recording of this concert to give to my husband, whose late father was in the orchestra. Any ideas where I can obtain a copy of this spectacular performance?
PS: Your husband then must have known Raymond Sird, who was a long time 1st violinist in the orchestra. My father and Raymond were childhood friends in Vermont in the 1930's.
Yes, he remembers him , my father in law was assistant principal violist. There are wonderful shots of my father in law in this performance and I would like to get a copy for my husband and daughter (who never knew him)
darkangel86727.......mutant Bachs, known in Boston as the "Tottlephone." In 1958, before becoming principal tpt, Ghitalla had the first of two lip operations to remove a cyst. This, along with his heart disease were physical challenges he had to contend with for the bulk of his career. Greatness in the face of real adversity!
for people that don't know this -- bernstein always considered this his FAVORITE SYMPHONY to direct. i think you can see this here. this is likly ny symphony orchestra.
People often equate Bernstein with Mahler - because of how much B supported and promoted Mahler's music. However, when it comes to Tchaikovsky, I think there are few how nailed the music better than Maestro Bernstein!!!
Did anyone else notice that Ghitalla switches his horn in to D for the last lick? Sweet...
