Radio wont play political songs, so you have to "lay it between the lines" This is a protest song -- the president he must have beans in his ears... polititians all must have beans in their ears... A Korean, Vietnam, or any war you like protest song. Remember the Dixie Chicks getting hate for what they said, it was ten times worse in the 50s and 60s
Good God! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This was back in the day when you never knew what kind of goofball song would be next on the radio, remember? You'd be going home from work in the '59 Chevy, turn on the radio and WTF? Somebody would be singing about "OOO EEE OO AH AH TING TANG WALLA WALLA BING BANG"... or "IT WAS A ONE-EYED, ONE-HORNED FLYIN PURPLE PEOPLE EATER", or "MAY THE BIRD OF PARADISE FLY UP YOUR NOSE". It was all simply to LAUGH AT. It was REAL AMERICA, and it was GOOD TIMES.
@GameTech500 IF you were joking, "u r a f***ing idiot", it's a strange joke. Most people know to put the little smile like this ;-) to let others know it's a joke.
You appear to have problems and anger issues, for your own good, go get help, you'll feel better.
I Remember My Mother Bought Me The 45, and a few days later they pulled the song off the radio, because kids were actually putting beans in their ears! I Don't Care,I Still Remember,And Love That Song! A Great Memory!
Your right the song was briefly banned, probably in Boston, where everything got banned in the 60s,
but it came back to chart very well for a kids folk song, by an unknown group. Maybe kids grew tired and stop putting beans in their ears and listening to the song.
I was thirteen when this song came out and and of course, like any thirteen year old boy, I had to try it. My poor mother had to help dig them out. Now I understand why they say you shouldn't do it but to be honest, I never would have thought of it if not for this stupid song.
Dave here. One of my late, lamented father's favorite sayings was, "Don't put peas in the baby's ears," meaning, don't say something around someone if you don't want them to pick up the suggestion when their doing so would have an undesirable result, an indirect reference to the contrariness of children who'll do the opposite of what they're told, i.e., "don't put peas in the baby's ears." (One of the hardest things to undo.)
I liked the serindepidy singers, old fashioned FUN music, that didnt conern itself with social issues in the least, like most folk music back then did.
Heard it too... How times have moved on (sadly) . God.. ..just imagine what the PC brigade would have to say about a song talking about putting beans in your ears! The elf and safety brigade would have a field day too.
Thank you for posting this! My mother saying "That's nice, just don't put beans in your ears" was a running joke the whole time I was growing up. Whenever we kids asked anything silly, or were being annoying, that was the answer we'd get!
@eoj2495 1964, when I was ten years old, KXOK in St Louis played it.. My brother heard this song and put a popcorn seed (we didn't have any dry beans at the time) in his ear and had to go to the doctor and have it removed. They stopped playing the song after a couple weeks due to complaints from mothers of stupid kids like him.
@Carus0e Actually have a vivid memory about this song- one of my best neighborhood friends brought it up one day- and sang it- and then I heard it on the radio quite a bit- I even learned the word "serendipitous' because of it-
Too cute... And I found while raising my 3 sons that if you tell them not to do anything, they do what you said not to, LOL... And, beans in their ears is better than rocks in the nose. Had that happen a few times with the kids, LOLOL.
@Atomsmasher777 its 4 any age if you have a sense of humour or are stupid and anyway untill i heard the song i ha ve 2 say it did not ocurr 2 me 2 put beans in them as a youngster my ma and pa always told me i could plant potatoes but either i have very small ears or seed potatoe are just 2 big
Hah!! Thanks for posting this classic! I used to hear this on the way to summer day camp in '64; it would be on the radio in our camp counselor's car...
now once aponn a time there was a lil boyy who actually did this, while singin tha song..the bean remaned in his ear for 2 months or more...and was starting to sprout
Wait a minute. The label says "mono", but this sound is definitely in stereo. It's amazing what beans in your ears can do to sound!

I remember this song as a kid. It's funny once you listen and grasp what is going on. But if you have beans in your ears, you won't get it.
