How did you fix the steep downswing? For the life of me, I cannot do it. My takeaway is perfect, then I let that club do a weird twirl at the top and then swing down on a too-steep path. Please help!
@dtmcbride With the position my club was in at the top, it forced a steep downswing. So I first had to get it in the right spot. The biggest difference was keeping the club much closer to my body. When I was really high at the top of my swing my arms were high and far away from my body. I sacrificed about 30-40 yards on my driver by keeping it much closer to my body, but I gained unbelievable control off the tee. Over time my distance returned and stayed just as accurate.
@EldrckTW Actually I take that back...my handicap slipped for a bit in 2004-05 since I wasn't playing as much as I'd like. It was closer to a 7 handicap back then.
and also have the problem of standing up through the shot exactly like your swing. been to a couple of pros but none seem to really help me or explain how to keep spine angle or if your looking down the line at my swing and draw a line against my backside I am unable to keep my backside on that line throught ther swing.
Again you have conqurered this. I think you might be able to help me!!!
@fireatheaven My biggest secret was...don't be afraid to get worse before you get better. If you expect to get worse you will see longer lasting results. You're resetting your swing. I've reset my swing about three times in my life. The first time I did this my handicap dropped from a 30 to a 15; then a 12 to a 5, then a 3 to a +3. Each time I did this, I slowed my swing down drastically to acquire my new swing, then over time picked up speed. You need to learn to walk before you can sprint.
@fireatheaven take a tee and set it about 3-4 feet on your line where you will be swinging then set it 6 inches outside the ball, besure you hit it on the way back, it will feel funny, but after 20 minutes of doing that, then hit normal and you should be back on plane
@fireatheaven This may help you but will make you look unconventional. You can preset your takeaway kind of like Moe Norman. I've found that doing this keeps me from going too far inside. Or you could research some take away drills her on YouTube.
@fireatheaven I am still battling this problem but getting better at it year over year. There is one drill I swear by and will continue until the day I die. Take an iron and lay it perpendicular to your feet just outside of the ball. This is the path your club head will follow. Now imagine there is another club perpendicular to your feet, but it is right next to your hands. This is the path your hands will follow. These two lines will force your club to move down the line on your back swing.
