  • Not only do you have suggestions but valid reasoning behind it. Smart man.

  • Well i could see this happening but i would like a hub of inteligence to translate the incoherint behaveour of our leaves in politics over our highways.

  • I would like to be able to rearrange how things appear when I log into youtube- such as organizing subscriptions so that the people I view most are on top, etc. And I would definately pay to never have to see an ad again.

Also, your video kind of mesmerized for some inexplicable reason. I couldn't look away from the screen- like watching a car accident occur, but less blood.

  • The comment system needs changing. You have to sift through the comments to see what people are replying to.

  • Good stuff man. Especially your first point.

  • you talk sense - ergo it won't be heard...

  • I think your very smart

  • Hey Joe! You know what, your'e awesome! just sayin :)

WISH you would post more videos tho :( i like your vlog or lectures whatever you want to call them...

  • I want my inbox to not display a message, comment, etc as unread even though I have read it 50 times. Also the new category browse page, well I just don't like it, also make it able to subscribe to playlists.

  • Joe will you be the CFO of my company? I don't know what it'll be yet, but just say yes.

  • Dude I totally agree with yuee!

  • wow your smart

  • i hate google ads especially the video ads

  • you can tell this guy is really really smart

  • id want to be able to remove my bad subscribers that try to make my good subscribers unsubscribe

  • @rockboyish You can do that actually. If you block them they can't subscribe, post comments, or message you. Rumpagump did this to me in 2008. I don't know why, random malice I think, but now I'm dead to him.

  • @JoeFelice what is they have already subbed me before i even knew they existed therfore i didnt block them

  • @rockboyish don't hate your trolls. They are people too, LOL.

  • @oxman0313 no. a troll ruined my entire life.

  • @oxman0313 and im not joking here.

  • well spoken good sir *subscribe*

  • You just won another subscriber. Great recommendations.

  • One thing I've found extremely annoying is that since the beta update, you couldn't easily access a play list's menu through the channel it's on. I like watching my videos one after another and I like getting some other people feedback in the comments.

  • I'd rather they just got rid of the pre-rolls. It doesnt really matter to me if i have to click out the little ad that pops up, but I've heard that garnier (or whatever company) chick advertise that shampoo at least 30 times and all i wanted to do is check out a video.

  • Since your a partner, will you answer me this: do you (& other partners) get less and less as more users become partners?

  • I like this analysis and this video.

Thanks for making and uploading it :-)

  • @LiberalViewer Hey man! I agree with you 100%. Also, this option he talks about to give users a choice to pay YouTube to not watch through intrusive ads that just get annoying is a great idea. I also, like how he says users will not be forced into anything.

  • stop drinking coffee

  • While the first 2 suggestions are gold, the last one strikes me as slightly flawed.

People are paying for the internet already, so are generally put off when they have to pay for something else on top of that. Another thing is, when something that was once free becomes something that you must pay for, people start to lose interest. And whats to say that Youtube will follow through with this fairly anyway? We'll most likely see more ads than was thought possible for those who haven't paid.

  • @Gigameth89 Well you aren't paying ti access Youtube, it would be an ad-free experience.

  • If i have to pay to watch partner videos i blame you but the rest are g reat wasnt really paying attention though

but five stars for caring bout Yt

  • I'm not a fan of the 3rd suggestion because if Youtube creates a pro-membership-type status where you pay a fee to avoid ad annoyance, then those (like me) who are broke, enjoy using Youtube as a free service, and don't actually mind the ads, would probably get screwed over when Youtube decides to increase the ad annoyance as a way to get us to finally give-in to the pro-membership. (Wow, that was a really long run-on sentence)

  • But I DO love the other two suggestions...especially the first one. :-)

  • definitely would but into that,,,,,,,,,,the ads in the top right corner are that big a pain in the ass are 30 second overlays of ridiculous esurance or doritos ads,,,,,,,,thats why my media intake is now 90% internet and 10% television,,,,,,not the other way around.

  • There are two main things I would love to change on Youtube!

FIRST: Never any "This content cannot be watched in your country." For Hulu, I get it. But I feel like the whole point of Youtube is that it's supposed to be everything for everyone, all the time.

SECOND: No pre-rolls. I don't even mind the banner overlays, but pre-rolls are not cool. Again, fine for other sites but not for Youtube.

Your suggestions were way more thoughtful than mine!

  • The second thing you talked about was enlightening, I never really noticed that YouTube relies on other services to communicate to their community.

  • your voice is hypnotizing. haha :]

  • to change youtube, they need a team to check out the flags. it is annoying as hell to be wrongly flagged.

  • I need to find a way to expand your fan base Joe! You are good stuff.

  • i would make the star ratings visible on the popular, most viewed, most discussed (etc) video pages again.

and that reminds me.. your first idea made me think of Amazon's rating and ranking system..which seems to have proven itself to be a very successful formula for them.

i can think of other websites that had just as much potential as YouTube, but couldn't seem to stop pulling the rug out from under their users with constant, frenzied and often unwarranted, changes.

    if it ain't broke....

  • Great Ideas/Suggestions i like your 1st one them most.

    Btw great shirt

  • its easy to take ads off of youtube. i never have to look at them.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE your ideas.

    thax for the vids.

i watch alot of youtube. like Phil and the tards and the soon to be trippys and i love them for there intertainment value.

however you are the first that i actualy finde intelectualy stimulating so

    THANK YOU !!!!

    ceep it up

  • Great ideas as always Joe, great choice in shirts also!

  • I like the first twp ideas. But I think I would stay with the annoying ads than pay--hmmm, then again... it is only two dollars... ad less videos...

  • his talking confused me...

  • the ads are pissing me off

  • Wow Joe, this is either coincidence or the YouTube staff really do watch your videos and read your comments. They're working on the two things I listed... sweetness :D

Comments still are a bit f'd up but I see they're working on that... and they introduced a way to remove subscription videos from the front panel. More like rigging it, they should just make it functional. How hard is it to cross reference my recently viewed data and not show it at all? Sigh

  • On a side note.

WMG, when removing audio from video, should be required to list the specifics. Such as what audio and their claim to ownership of said copyright. Otherwise it should be considered illegal censorship as no one has the ability to dispute the case based on the lack of information

This could be an easy way of silencing unpopular opinions, and should be regarded with suspicion.

  • You Tube will never be much of a community until they fix the horrible comment system.

Being able to respond to a video comment without hunting through a mass of other comments would be a great thing indeed.

And then there is the matter of whether the comment will actually be posted without dozens of retries, it's annoying and could be fixed quite easily.

  • Re: You Tube will never be much of a community until they fix the horrible comment system.

and you know what's funny? when they first changed it to 'show more comments' .. i naively assumed they'd finally fixed the problem.. but i was wrong.. the defect is definitely intentional.. and its purpose is to intentionally break up and minimize any ongoing conversations between users.

  • I totally understand what you mean. Although I wasn't yet a user, I can remember a time when conversations were always clumped together, you could follow their process and add your own two cents, rather than this broken mess. No you can't follow conversations, and you have all this "@so-and-so" crap, which is annoying as hell and impossible to follow.

  • Great ideas Joe. I'd love to be able to use clips of songs here and there as background music, if Amazon can play clips, why can't I include them and give credit to the artist as form of promotion? I think it would liven up lots of the videos. I's also like to see a better address book. Be able to sync my Facebook contacts here or from Linked In, it might foster a bigger community or greater viewership.

  • Damn, you come up with amazing ideas! I 100% agree with you on all your suggestions!

    ~ YouTube owners, he's a keeper!

  • how about no wmg

  • I especially agree about the ad-option idea. It will need to be tweaked, but the basic premise is great. Also, I would suggest that every "Grab-Bag Thursday" you propose one improvement to YT. Than make an ever-expanding playlist of it of it (Top 3, Top 10, Top 100, Top 1000, see where I am going) that can serve as a source of inspiration for the "powers-that-be" at TY. Good job!

  • i would add a mature tab not just for porn but for all the videos that are deemed to be inappropriate that way we would expand our view count and the amount of witch people sigh up daily this would not only give them more publicity it would also evolve youtube from a file video sharing site to The video sharing site. this tab dose not have to contain any porn but it could loosen the restriction on nudity and gore not seen or censored in some videos. hell they could even make a duel user system.

  • I anticipate a sequel to this, or an least an expansion as to your other thoughts would be. These are awesome ideas, and they'll definitely be helpful to the YouTube community as well as profitable.

  • I totally agree with the Ad-option idea. Well all 3 I agree with, but I am specifically happy with that idea.

    xx

  • those r actually really good ideas

  • I totally agree!

  • You are smarter than your average Joe

    =)

  • id change that we can pick our own still from our video. to soidngvioengfvr[on

    nvm to hard to explaain.

  • One thing I would change for YouTube.

~When I watch a subscription video from my subscription box,

I don't want the same video to be in my subsciption box 2 days later.

  • @lilylola12139 on my sub box the videos dont even go away! i have to click the x on them each time after i view them, my inbox is inconsistent and never works well when reading messages too

  • like ur ideas!

  • Also, I LOVE your first idea of increasing the "top 100" to the top...1000 or even higher.

  • I honestly cannot tell you what the last pop up ad in a video has been about in the last 2 months. I've just become so accustomed to closing them when they pop up that I don't even take the 1 second it takes to recognize what the ad is selling.

  • All awesome ideas.

  • Very intelligent and thought out argument. I agree with you 100%.

  • wow joe you got awesome ideas they should totally consider the first one!!

    i know i liked it

  • yes they change so much you can;t even watch there videos

  • Dont think that they should expand the most subscribed and all that to 1000 or more it seems like too much people would be scrolling through channels for days.

  • You own. 'Nuff said.

  • Gountry, Bluegrass and blues

& other music for uplifting gormundizers

  • CBGB's?

  • I agree with your views, especially the advertisement one. Also I'd like to add (and this might sound a little weird) that your voice is just awesome to listen to. I don't know why or how but you're like the born speaker (?) and just for that I have subscribed :)

  • you have your point.

and i'll share it with you

  • High five and total agreement! 1000 FTW!!

  • I would also add a way to manage your "recommended" videos, primarily a way to remove videos from the list.

I've seen "charlie the unicorn" a million times, and I don't want to watch a video made by an eight-year-old in rebuttal to a halo video. but youtube really wants me to watch them...

  • Absolutely agree with you.

  • One problem with the ad removal. You can just use Firefox ad blocker

  • Mozilla ad-block plus FTW

  • AMEN!!!!

  • you are a very smart person. you and dan brown are many of the reasons i keep coming back to this site. :)

  • I agree with paying for an ad free youtube, I didn't care when they had an ad in the corner, but then they had an ad pop up on almost every video. I took me a while to get used to that, but now youtube is making you watch an ad before the the video, and that just annoys the hell out of me.

  • very good points. i completely agree with you!(:

  • Being only a viewer, there is little that comes to mind when I think of what to change. (At least on my own) I think you have some good ideas yourself, I would would pay not to see ads.

  • AP top 25 youtube list

  • So true man, very well said.

  • Great video. I found your video from JPizzle's twitter. I would change this....There should be someone, or a team of people who goes through all of the new videos throughout the day and these people, or one person should pick favorite videos of theres. They should then all go through these videos and pick out the very best ones. These very best videos should be FEATURED! People like ourselves work so hard to make videos and get nothing out of it. The same five YouTubers get featured every day.

  • good points.

  • you're voice reminds me of al roker.

    just thought i'd share that.

  • Ahahaha, that's a new one :)

  • That first suggestion would be awesome. I'd say a lot of us are nerds when it comes to the stats on our channels, and other channels.

  • nice ideas, Joe. Especially 1 & 2.

  • Great vid Joe.

  • YouTube having its own live stream like blogtv or ustream.

That way people who want to do live shows wouldn't have to make those stupid 30 seconds videos saying they're live. Something could just pop up in the subscribtion box saying the person is live.

  • Tag, you're it.

  • No one has to know I stole that from Dan.

    Shhh, go away.

  • Nobody would bother paying to remove the ads since there are many free ways to do it. I block all ads through my hosts file.

  • If that was as popular as you think, nobody would be making any money.

  • @JoeFelice

What, you mean, there are ads on youtube? Wait I gotta see this, just a moment to turn-off ad-block, and.... oh man, you are right it's awful, I'm turning it back on, ahhh... this is the youtube I know and love.

  • @Anonymous5125 Yeah, that's the best way to do it. But most people have no idea how to or even that it's possible. (Anyone interested in doing it however should google for this wonderful little program called "hostsman")

  • I completely agree with your thoughts about the annoying advertising.

I've stopped watching videos like collegehumors that have the annoying advertising before them.

  • I don't know about you, but I have seen quite a few of the 30 second ads before i can even watch a video sometimes.

And more likely than not, I will navigate away from the page because I don't feel like watching 30 seconds of shit before a 2 minute video.

  • If I wanted to change 3 things, it should be:

    Stop vote botting

    Stop false flagging

    Stop false DMCA

fix those things, and I would really happy...

  • Well put Joe. I especially agree with your 1st point - expand the list from a top 100 to a top 1000 or more, I'm a bit of a stats nerd and I would love seeing how well or how poorly some youtubers are doing.

  • i agree with everything you said there. one thing i would change, and this would affect all of those who are really popular, is the ability to mark people as spam or filter the mail to determine its content and have them placed in corresponding folders marked as such.

  • I think you should do a segment on the "Drug Wars" and the controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana.

  • he should work for Google/youtube. The reason I say that is because he is very creative and and knows what the people want. And that's what most people who work for youtube do and develop these ideas to make things more user friendly. I call this guy a Youtube Politician.

  • wow this guy is very smart, and is not 10 years old and is not ripping on youtube.

  • smarticle man right here!

  • booby cacti for EVERYONE!

  • Amen!

  • I'm pretty sure you're brilliant!

  • Great ideas!

  • i like the first one :D

  • You sir are a smart man

  • well i especially like that last one..

anyway, what's up with WMG? why do they always 'claim' audio, thus disabling it? it's not like people are generally benefiting off their music (besides partners and i think you guys even have guidelines to follow), we're only making them more popular by spreading their music. so if they don't want people listening to their music by taking it down, fine, but it ruins videos

  • Great Video Joe, awesome suggestions!

  • i would bring back the old featured page

casue at the moment they feature you in countrys and they only feature partners

im a partner and i find this ridiculous they should be featuring anybody who makes good video not just becasue they are partners

  • I believe the first two are gold, but the last one kind of scared me. This is what happened to BlogTv and their "Pro" accounts. They did this and then supercharged the site with more ads. If YouTube did do this, everything should be the same. But they did add more features so it so maybe there could be a Smaller account below partners, but above the standard just signed up. Just a thought

  • When you said "Quite as much" in the end, there was a little Pat Condell in you. Are you related? :P

  • Three great suggestions. I'd definitely pay a few £ pa to remove the ads.

  • The only regrettable thing about this video is that is will never make 'front page' on youtube due to insufficient views and subscribers. Sigh. If only videos like this went viral.

  • #3 could work but may affect marketing as a free video sharing site. #3 would still make it technically free, but then marketing isn't all about fact, and so just the perception that some of the YouTube product needs to be paid for, could have negative marketing effects.

Also for the people who are not bothered by the ads establishing a fee to view ad free would cause them to feel like they should be bothered. Again this is about managing viewers perception of product quality.

  • wow this guy is smart. haha

  • I never thought about your 2nd point before...its a good one.

  • Joe I think #1 is brilliant! Great suggestion!

    # 2 creates a liability risk for YT related to DMCA legislation. That is, by being and appearing entirely uninvolved in the creation of content on the site YouTube avoids legal judgments that would hold them accountable for copyright infringing content. Were YT to become more involved in the community then they'd risk creating the perception that they are actively involved in driving creation of content and therefore lose DMCA protection.

  • Another change that I would suggest.

Isn't it amazing that sites like BlogTV and UStream are capturing all the live media, but still somehow YouTube has yet to invest in this sort of upgrade? There is a huge business waiting for YouTube when it comes to Live Video streaming content but they seem to let everyone else take the bait. YouTube being a video platforming site, wouldn't it just make sense to exploit all possibilities? Enough with people like ShaneDawson and WhatTheBuck redirecting me.

  • For myself, the higher, maybe infinite, list of rankings throughout all the lists would make YouTube substantially more interesting. Like you said, everyone wants to have a number attached to their name.

YouTube uploading their own content is pretty meaningless to me. I'd rather have them spend time on working on their server, rather than spending that time to use more of it.

  • Third Change is THE BEST !!! I hope they will do it !!!

  • Okay ... i didn't get your second change ?..

what exactly you wish to change ?...

  • ...

  • most sites do between 12 dollars a year to 10 every 6 months. 24 bucks is a bit much for me.

  • It's not like you have to pay it anyways. It all comes down to whether or not you think the advertisements that is a pain in your ass is worth $2/month.

  • I'd prefer to see the ads than see the partners promoting an ad free subscription in their videos...

  • You honestly think that the constant content uploaded by your favorite youtuber is always going to consist only of ad free promotion?

If I see a swarm of people uploading videos during a certain week promoting this, that's fine, besides that week, the content that's uploaded is going to go right back to normal!

  • Wow. You just blew my mind. :) lol

  • i like! hope someone who can suggest it to the big boys sees this! :)

  • Wow you're pretty smart =)

    I hope someone sees this.

    Great Idea's!

    =D

  • all of the ideas are good and minor so no huge changes.well done

  • your amazingly smart and i hope they hear you suggestions.

  • How about stop censoring view counts, search results and phasing out those who expose corruption in government? Yeah, that one will go over well. They delete videos that are powerful and expose the Illuminati. It's all about corporate greed and keeping the public poor and stupid.

They promote a lot of nonsense too. How about another idea - They can promote educational material more and less stupidity? We need to breed intelligence now more than ever.

Third idea - Have a phone support line!

  • I applaud these suggestions.

  • Dam Joe, they were some good suggestions...Are you seriously telling me you have had enough of the "turn yourself into a cartoon" ad? I love that shiiiiit!!lol

  • For a while I figured hell, they paid for it, let them have it. Then I looked up the company, Zwinky, on Wikipedia, and my feelings changed. According to Wikipedia, the cartoon thing is basically a way to get their software on your computer and install preferences in your web browser that direct you to their search engine. Yuck.

  • Also if you scroll the mouse wheel over the video, it should turn the volume up or down like in VLC. I like that feature.

  • You make REALLY good suggestions that I really think youtube should watch this, and really take them into consideration at least.

One thing extra I would change about YouTube, is for them to add some kind of live feed, even with videos on your channel, you can have a live show as well. I think that would be pretty interesting, and you call the shots as to if you have advertisement while you do the live show. What do you think?

  • You're a genius man. I really hope they consider your ideas.

  • I agree especially on the last one. There is too much advertising around nowadays, and I don't even live in the US. The annoying thing about YTads is that you have to click cancel on the pop-up within the video itself.

My suggestion to an improvement is being able to sort by date uploaded in the "more from: ***" -bar beneath the video information in the sidebar.

    Good video Joe, as always.

  • spoken very well my friend, like i see other people are saying the subscription boxes really should be a priority too

  • Amazing suggestions Joe

    I love them all :D

  • It would be nice it the messaging system was fixed. It;s terrible. It would also be nice to be able to see what videos you've commented on or even to just be able to go back to your comment when someone responds to you so if it's a really popular video you arent searching through pages and pages of comments trying to find what you had said originally.

  • In 2006 when I joined there was a channel module where you could review all of your old comments, going way back, in one place. I loved it. Then it disappeared.

  • I don't have anything to add to what you said, but you sir (as I am just seeing you now) have won another subscriber.

  • Those are some good ideas!

I'd like to see an improvement to the subscription box on the front page. It could be easier to navigate and tell which videos are new. Plus old videos keep appearing again, which the should fix :)

  • valid points joe, but Im afraid that like taxes, once the the revenue starts and the next hurdle appears, they will just keep increasing the cost to compensate ? scary thought to me given the appeal of a free public forum for all.....maybe they should just improve the add platform?

  • There is a very big failsafe valve on charging too much. First that people will opt out by choosing the advertising model, and if the advertising option weren't available anymore, they'd watch their videos on another of the many websites that host video.

YouTube's advantage over its competitors is the perpetuation of marketshare. It doesn't have a unique product with intrinsic trade secrets. As soon as they piss people off, they die. My request is about expanding, not restricting our options.

  • thanks for the answer Joe, I guess I just fear uncontrolled revenue generators given the world as it is, a constant process of finding new ways to generate income.

  • Excellent Ideas! My favorite was the first one. I would like to hear the counter-arguments which I find hard to imagine, could be articulated as well.

  • I know this is a stupid idea, but I think it fits in with the video.

YouTube needs to expand their customization. Not add features, but just extend what they already have. Like the background size limit for non-partners is 256k, which is literally NOTHING if you want a background to sustain it's quality.

Another is to allow non-partners to have channel banners...it makes a channel look amazing. But instead of uploading the image, just upload it to a image sharing site, then link the image!

    :D

  • i just came across your channel and wow i like your ideas for youtube its really getting annoying lately..same people are always on the front page

as a partner myself i like the 3rd idea but with youtube's money issues..let's hope they consider

tweeted this vid Joe and nice to discover your page ;)

    archie

  • Thanks for the support, Archie!

  • i just retweeted this.

i couldnt have said it better myself.

no really, i couldnt have. im not that articulate ^^

    awesome job! hope they listen

  • Also: How about an improved messaging system? God, I hate YouTube's inbox. But maybe that's just me, being used to gmail. haha.

  • 1 and 2 are definately do-able. Id say 3 is a bit of a bigger questions mark also due to the mysterious finances of youtube and google which not a lot is heard of.

  • Super smart ideas! Hopefully Youtube will look into them!

  • In my own opinion, i think it would be very handy if youtube could provide some sort of tool that allowes us to ex off the video's we don't want to watch in our subscription boxes.

I know you can just fastforward to the very few last minutes of the video's for them to come out as "viewed" but it would just be so much easier and less of a hassle for those whom don't have such great internet if you could just click a small ex on it in the subscription box or mark it as viewed.

    -Lex

  • That is a really good one! One of the best I've heard.

  • thank you.

    -Lex

  • I agree, especially with the first point!

I would love a list because it would drive be to climb it and actually make good videos haha :)

  • Crap video. YouTube sucks!

  • genius!

I hope that these things will happen

i cant wait to be partner! im already almost to 1000 subs!

  • I always thought about expanding the list to 1,000! Great minds ...etc. :P Your other two suggestions are brilliant. Hopefully, the YouTube staff is listening.

  • These ideas can, and should, be classified as EPIC WINS!

  • I completely agree on point 2. If youtube wants to hire a community liaison i'd gladly throw my hat in that ring.

  • Good suggestions. Besides the improvement to video quality (better bit rate options), I can't think of one positive feature change for the YouTube site in over a year. I use the site less because of the these negative changes.
