A real good performance which was so subtle it was great - I 'm a favorite of Julianne Moore and her work and her acting in Boggie Nights was amazing She has yet to be honored with an oscar which she should have been given for this role as well for several other performances especailly for Heaven Can wait
@TheDrYes - only Kate Winslet was nominated in the different category. As Kim Basinger goes - talent or no talent - that particular performance WAS awesome.
If titanic hadn't come out that year L.A confidential wouldve won its like when goodfellas lost to dances with wolves or star wars to annie hall (not to say titanic didn't deserve the oscar Kate Winslete shouldve had that award)
I think anyone who thinks Titanic didn't deserve to win Best Picture and Best Director have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. I think most of the nominees in 1998 deserved to be nominated, but I think Ms. Basinger here ROBBED Ms. Gloria Stuart of the statuette she rightfully deserved.
@MundyArtStudio Kim Basinger's career after the Oscar has been abysmal. She is almost 60 years old now. Her age combined with her lack of talent explains why she can only get a 2 minute cameo in a Zac Efron movie.
She isn't a great actress and shouldn't have even been nominated for this mediocre performance. Plus she was way too old for the role (born 1953 = 44 years old when she played a hooker in 1997)
Nah personally I thought she was too subtle in her role. And not at all a femme fatale, her character was a goodie in my opinion. I actually only watched L.A confidential to see her peformance and after watching it I was like, "how the fuck did she win an Oscar for that?"

This was fun to watch on television that night. I was happy for Kim, and she and Alec were in love at that time. You can see how thrilled he is for her. However, looking back I say Julianne Moore should have nabbed it.
@lenny10marlin She's pushing 60 now isn't she? You can't expect her to look like Lynn Bracken forever. Last I saw of her she still looked like a beauty. Still sad her and Alec divorced. Loved them as a couple.
@cw6391 Titanic isn't that bad, it's a good film. But if you're implying that L.A. Confidential should've won Best Picture, you are 100% correct. It was better than its winner, Titanic.
I am so jealous of her. Both she and I suffer from social anxiety and have grown up afraid of giving speeches...but she owned this! I would have just passed out then and there. :(
@10350734 yeah for someone who has horrible anxiety and can't even sit straight when on Letterman, I was amazed Kim Basinger pulled off such a great speech anyway. Maybe her shock and joy was overrode everything else.
One of the worst wins of the 1990s, she was not memorable at all... How the heck she got singled out by such an amazing cast is beyond me, Julianne Moore deserved it.
@bradley583 Sorry dude. But the AMPAS thought differently, the HFPA thought differently, the SAG (partially) thought differently, I thought differently. I'm sure Julianne's time will come and if not, there will be major hell to pay. And if you're still frustrated at Basinger winning, you can make fun of her losing at the BAFTAs or something... :P
@nickolas18769 Its all politics, campaigns and money... That is why time and time again, big stars and big films always win these things, Julia Roberts beating Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Bullock beating Gabourey Sidibe or Carey Mulligan, Hilary Swank beating Imelda Staunton, Helen Hunt beating Judi Dench, the list goes on and on. Basinger's performance was nice to look at but no substance or depth, she was a beautiful whore who Russell Crowe falls in love with.
@bradley583 I disagree. I think shse added some depth and showed the sadness being the bombshell femme fatale stereotype. Streep even took notice and said Basinger was the only one to make the femme fatale seem like a real person. It's just a very subtle performance so it doesn't scream Oscar. But that's why I like it. And this year was weak for acting anyway. She won because the film was bound to lose to Titanic.
@bradley583 , you are so right. I stop taking these awards too seriously after mediocre ladies- Sandra Bullock , Julia Roberts, and Helen Hunt won undeserved Oscars. Karma is a you know what because , now, Julia R. & Helen H. are both having film career problems. Julianne Moore deserved this Oscar.
@films5555 Julia Roberts having career problems? She's still one of the highest paid actresses and Eat Pray Love last year was a huge hit. But I agree that Bullock and Roberts winning was because of their popularity. Helen Hunt won because she was the only american nominated and was in a movie with Nicholson. I think Kim Basinger deserved her award. Her category was weak anyway. Julianne Moore should have won for Far From Heaven.
I was hoping this win would enable Kim to become one of Hollywood's paramount leading actresses and show people what she's capable of - but alas, the kind of iconic part never really came around again. Kim Basinger, like her contemporary Michelle Pfeiffer, is a very rare combination of sincere acting talent and astonishing beauty. It will be said when Miss Basinger passes on - THIS was a MOVIE STAR.
@Messylin I think the thing about actresses like Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Charlize Theron is they would have been bigger stars and gotten those movie star roles if they were around in the 40s where people accepted astonishingly beautiful and talented women onscreen. These days people consider actresses with that beauty too intimidating, so they'd prefer the girl next door actresses who look like Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts, the ones they can relate too.
She Does not deserve this Oscar*!! She was practically in only one scene in the movie!! Gloria Stuart was robbed!! Kim Basinger did not deserve this!!
@brwneyezx3 Gloria Stuart would have won for best voice-over. Her role was pretty much non-existent. And, if you ever saw L.A. Confidential, Basinger was in plenty of scenes. If you're complaining about lack of scenes, remember that this is the SUPPORTING ACTRESS category.
Kim Basinger deserved it with this performance. It was her last chance in a great acting career and the academy felt she was good enough ,in this part, to earn it! A pleasant surprise in the best oscar night ever. Way to go Kim.We love you!!!
Your truly right. The biggest Oscar mistake. If she had wom Titanic would have broken the record for most wins & Gloria would be the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar. Total Injustice.
why the hell dind't they give this award to gloria stuart? she was much better in titanic than kim was in L.A. confidential! it would also be a nice tribute to her decades long career! RIP
Okay I know some people will only think off me as a noob but whatever I just want to share my opinion that's all.
L.A. confidential was a very good film but I think I might off been overhyped it wasn't one of the best ever(I like alot of other crime films better) and Kim Basinger she did a pretty good job acting but it really did not seem Oscar worthy at all. I mean she was just a whore in that movie. I mean Russell Crow's character was alot more memorable.
@YoungFrankenstein - what bloody RUBBISH. Julianne Moore suffers from Streep Syndrome - way too many nominations a film. Kim Basinger is a hugely underrated actress, who did exceptional work in the 80s especially.
Kim Basinger is such a beautiful and talented woman! I think she deserved that Oscar, although I love Julianne Moore, but Kim was great in L.A. Confidential, good for her =)
Joan Cusack's performance wasn't anything too special.
Minnie Driver's was touching but a tad bit ordinary.
Julianne Moore's was fantastic but her character wasn't dynamic enough.
Gloria Stuart's was thrown in to give Titanic another nomination (Seriously, her role was reading a story. Nothing more.)
Basinger won because her character's vulnerability made her so real. Her emotions were conveyed so well she seemed not to be acting but actually being her part.
She played her role with such subtelty that she was almost not acting. She was perfect, the only actress in the 90s who could portray this character with so much class and depth. She totally deserved the Oscar and everytime I watch this I become touched. I loved when Jack Nicholson stood up cheering her for winning the Oscar. He recognizes a talent and so did the Academy this year with one of the most underrated actresses that ever lived.
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin were such a dashing, glamourous and striking couple. They reminded me of a Carole Lombard and Clark Gable of the 90s. It's so sad how everything went to hell. Miss them as a couple. You could tell Alec loved her so much.
With diagnosed Social Anxiety Disorder which developed into agoraphobia, she deserved an Oscar for having the courage to get up on stage, or to chase her dreams and become an actor despite this awful disease in the first place.
@HabituallyObsessed yes she has severe panic disorder and anxiety, so I'm shocked she was able to manage such a great speech. I've seen her on Letterman and whil she was charming she was a nervous wreck.
@Tigerlily21 I believe she spent lots of time convincing herself that she deserved this so there was need to feel ashamed. I can even picture the looks in her eyes when she heard the nasty words about her Oscar as we still constantly hear today. I had a similar condition as hers, only I know how deserving she was.
Gracious, elegant and beautiful...she has a figure like a goddess but doesn't flaunt it and a truly kind spirit. If anyone comes closer to Old Hollywood than Kim Basinger, let me know who she is. There aren't too many in her league.
@CDU916 Basinger was the blonde who exuded old hollywood in the 80s and 90s, but now I think Charlize Theron took that title from her. and both even played mother and daughter in a film!
People shouldn't complain about this win, since Basinger was brilliant in a nuanced performance. I guess you guys only appreciate flashy roles and demand that actors have a nervous breakdown on screen in order to get an Oscar. It's much tougher to look normal and believable. What you SHOULD be complaining about is a crap movie like "Titanic" beating out a brilliant film noir like "L.A. Confidential" for Best Picture and the major awards that year. That was outrageous, not Basinger's win.
@zim83 Titanic was far from a "crap movie" once you get past the fact that it dealt with a fictional addition to a tragic historical event. It's a very good movie with very good performances and it's foolish to ignore that.
@zim83 what did you find "crap" about titanic? i've seen both movies and titanic is one of my favorite movies all-time and one of the most beloved movies in the history of film. there's a reason it has a wide appeal; james cameron did a brilliant job. and it deserved the acclaim...because it was an emotional epic done on a beautiful and grand scale that told the people of two people the audience started to care about and connect to, based on a real tragic historical event well researched.
i was so taken by this movie and the performances of all the leading players - Ms Bassinger was amazingly real and touching in her acting and sensitive to the portrayal of this complex women Her performance was so understaded but effected and moving to me - Watch her face !!!!! I also ahave to add how moved I was with Julianne Moore who was and is one of our finest actresses in this decade
i was so happy for kim basinger... her acceptance speech was so real and her performance in L.A Confidential was just trumendous... she played a prostitute, the veronika lake's mannerism and she showed us lynn bracken spirit, so it was like she played three differents persons at the same time... just incredible !... and to finish, a well-deserved best supporting actress Oscar. CONGRATULATION KIM !!!
Gloria deserved the Oscar... I'm sorry she didn't win. It was a great performance by a 89-year old actress. Unfortunately she died less than two weeks ago at the age of a 100 years. She was a fantastic actress for 80 years, and she never won an Oscar... So sad. =(
Kim Basinger was great in LA Confidential. Meryl Streep even said she was the only one to play a femme fatale and make that role a real person. And she won get over it. It doesn't matter who you thought should have won. She got the votes, so stop wasting so much space talking about who should have won.
I was 7 or almost 7 when she won and even though I obviously hadn't seen the movie, hers is the first speech I remember ever seeing! I can't believe I bumped into this. She looks so beautiful, breathtaking. Wow. Still does. She's such a Southern belle "Daddy this is for you!" and the first three lines "OH... MY... GOD!!" talk about spontaneity vs. people who rehearse for these things. Gotta love her.
One of the most genuine and emotional Oscar acceptance ever. Everybody in the room seemed so happy for her - even Jack Nicholson stood up to applaud her - and she gave a memorable and true speech.
One of the most genuine and emotional Oscar acceptance ever. Everybody in the room seemed so happy for her - even Jack Nicholson stood up to applaud her - and she gave a memorable and true speech.
Her performance in this movie is truly amazing. But it is also very sophisticated and subtle and I think that´s why many people think she didn´t deserve the awards. People in the Oscars like to see dramatic performances in the screen.
EVERYONE THOUGHT ...it was going to be Gloria Stuart....BUT hang on The Academy did the right thing....I was totally shock!!! but happy for Kim....

Best Picture: LA Confidential
Best Director and Actor I accept.
Best ActressL Dame Judi Dench
Best Supporting Actor: Total toss up between Burt Reynolds and Robin Williams
Best Supporting Actress: Give Julianne Moore something for ONCE
Screenplays went to the right movies.
3 of the big 8, 4 or 5 if you like Reynolds are also think Titanic was bad, were wrong.
Come on Oscars, come on.

He recognizes a talent and so did the Academy this year with one of the most underrated actresses that ever lived.
andregiao 1 year ago 5
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin were such a dashing, glamourous and striking couple. They reminded me of a Carole Lombard and Clark Gable of the 90s. It's so sad how everything went to hell. Miss them as a couple. You could tell Alec loved her so much.

I just watched L.A. Confidential yesterday and I can see why she won the Oscar.

With diagnosed Social Anxiety Disorder which developed into agoraphobia, she deserved an Oscar for having the courage to get up on stage, or to chase her dreams and become an actor despite this awful disease in the first place.
HabituallyObsessed 1 year ago
@HabituallyObsessed yes she has severe panic disorder and anxiety, so I'm shocked she was able to manage such a great speech. I've seen her on Letterman and whil she was charming she was a nervous wreck.
Tigerlily21 1 year ago
@Tigerlily21 I believe she spent lots of time convincing herself that she deserved this so there was need to feel ashamed. I can even picture the looks in her eyes when she heard the nasty words about her Oscar as we still constantly hear today. I had a similar condition as hers, only I know how deserving she was.
HabituallyObsessed 1 year ago
Gracious, elegant and beautiful...she has a figure like a goddess but doesn't flaunt it and a truly kind spirit. If anyone comes closer to Old Hollywood than Kim Basinger, let me know who she is. There aren't too many in her league.
CDU916 1 year ago 2

That was outrageous, not Basinger's win.
zim83 1 year ago 49
@zim83 Titanic was far from a "crap movie" once you get past the fact that it dealt with a fictional addition to a tragic historical event. It's a very good movie with very good performances and it's foolish to ignore that.
Whackooyzero 1 year ago
@Whackooyzero Yeah, well, it's just derivative Hollywood crap to a lot of people, myself included.
zim83 1 year ago
@zim83 I guess you only appreciate a boring-ass film with no emotional center. People shouldn't complain about Titanic.
Fuckin' hypocrite.
caysayfla 10 months ago
@zim83 what did you find "crap" about titanic? i've seen both movies and titanic is one of my favorite movies all-time and one of the most beloved movies in the history of film. there's a reason it has a wide appeal; james cameron did a brilliant job. and it deserved the acclaim...because it was an emotional epic done on a beautiful and grand scale that told the people of two people the audience started to care about and connect to, based on a real tragic historical event well researched.

i was so happy for kim basinger... her acceptance speech was so real and her performance in L.A Confidential was just trumendous... she played a prostitute, the veronika lake's mannerism and she showed us lynn bracken spirit, so it was like she played three differents persons at the same time... just incredible !... and to finish, a well-deserved best supporting actress Oscar.

Tigerlily21 1 year ago 40
@Tigerlily21 Então quer dizer que Meryl virou Deus? Tudo o que ela falar virou regra, indiscutível?
So, Meryl turned around to say that God? All what they say is now the rule, unquestionable?
Kim was one of the worsts winners ever. Who deserved? Julianne Moore, Joan Cusack or Gloria Stuart.

Her performance in this movie is truly amazing. But it is also very sophisticated and subtle and I think that´s why many people think she didn´t deserve the awards. People in the Oscars like to see dramatic performances in the screen.
