  • The UK has been privatising it's water supply off, major shares are now owned by China.

  • what happens to the water supply in Chinese villagers where their main industry is sorting recycled materials and e-waste??? please someone answer asap

  • Gag.

  • @kristijanadrian

Are you mad? What China does in raping its environment has a significant impact on the rest of the world! The Earth is a closed system. Did you not hear that 20% of the mercury in Canadian soil comes from Chinese coal? Why wouldn't North America, South America, Europe, Asia have a legitimate say in what they do? It has nothing to do with something so trivial as competition and "supremacy of the West."

  • FUCK THIS VIA RAIL COMMERCIAL

  • Fantastic pictures!

  • I Love looking at pictures of Heavy Industry. I enjoyed looking at the pictures Edward Burtynsky took of China's factories and Shanghai's urban renewal at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

    I want to visit Shanghai.

  • i think we should p.o.q and get up to uranus.. we are all stuffed....once its out of the ground you cant put it back

  • i did a project on this guy for school about 5 years ago, stumbled across him at random. his photos of power plants in ontario are amongst the most beautiful images ive ever seen

  • His work kinda causes mixed feelings for me. On one hand it's impressive the influence that industry can have on the planet, and I think it's awe-inducing, the power of economic activity. On the other hand the social and ecological impact of it is just... apalling. So it's like as a human it makes you both proud and embarassed of modern industrial society at the same time.

  • First, if you've actually seen the documentary about him, He confronts the bitter irony of contributing, even in a small way, to the inequity he exposes. And he doesn't just talk about China. He talks about Bangladesh and the US too.

  • ya, I watched 15 minutes in my environmental science class...just stop talking.

  • His previous shows have also shown a lot of Canadian and American mine sites.

  • The three gorges dam is a nightmare landscape!

  • There's elevating the mundane to the sublime, and then there's elevating mud to the sublime. The work is so beautiful and it's so elequently explained. Thanks for sharing!

  • nul a chier

  • Good Vid

  • Wow... yeah. More folks need to see this and accept responsibility for this devastation! WE have corrupted the earth beyond recognition. We will not stop until every last tree in the rainforest will be felled to feed our greed and hunger..... it is endless... how sad

  • simply amazing!

  • Manufactured Landscapes is a movie, worth watching

  • wow that was really cool! he is good! i like his stuff!

it's cool how he can make things that seem ugly look good!

  • Great movie.

  • Pretty and amazing stuff.

  • Well, i like the beauty of natue and stuff,

but i won't deny that i see a kind of beauty in cities. I love seattle, the way the trees and the grayness of everything is melded together.

  • vealer2, you are an idiot.

you are one of those idiots who care next to nothing about persons, who have to work in those polluted areas and and the immense destruction of nature.

  • like i said before Wahhhaaa :O)

  • vealer, you do understand that we can only hurt the world so much, i mean really, there is a reason to be upset, if we push earth to hard, it will puch back... until there isnt a single human left on Earth...

  • very interesting work! makes me very sad to see what human beings do to our world.

  • so .... we're screwed but at least it will look good in a picture above the fire

  • oh whaaaaaa we are hurting the world oh NOooooooo gesssh LIB

but the pics are good :O)

  • Do you realize what you sound like

  • I agree with muskoxen, the images have a beauty all of their own. The damage that the place make though is sad and a bit overwhelming...

    Interesting thanks for posting.

  • Nice images!

  • omg this si soo sick, who knew such places had such things, so much for trying to save the earth!

  • Terrific work

  • Hauntingly informative...thank you for sharing

  • great photos - can look at them for hours. political, social and environmental issues aside they are beautiful in their way.

  • All these pictures should encourage us to start protecting our environment, not just thinking of it, we need action NOW!!!

We are losing our world and it won´t be a nice place to live in a few decades.

  • INteresting pictures..

Few bother with these things. Industry is awesome.. seriously.

  • vikivale1, i'm sorry that i accidently marked your comment as spam...

can anyone teach me how to unmark it?

  • I was recently at the John Hartman exhibition in my city of Winnipeg and his paintings had a great deal of industrial metaphor and symbolism.

Now, if I had realized what Edward Burtynsky was doing I probably would have asked that they expo some of his work. Although it's fairly literal in approach, it's incredibly significant.

    Warhol is in October.

  • I believe that the artist's comments are on industrialization in general - he even says so at the very begninning of the video. "[sic] Where the elements come from... and where they go afterwards."

If you haven't seen these photos before, they have been featured in Time Magazine, National Geographic, and many other prestigeous news papers.

The CBC is a great station, very enviromentally conscious.

  • But if these companys are damagin the climate why should they not be held accountable for thier actions and perhaps encouraged through the dynamic art of Photography to change and or source more appropriate solutions for thier business practices. ! so I like it! lol

  • I honestly do not think the intention of this artsit is to villify one particular source of concern in the environmental crisis. However more to highlight through hiw own skill the emphasis on environmental concern in the best measure he can. In depicting serveral locatons of landscapes it is mearly I believe showing the crisis as an image to the general public.

  • He makes pictures of what he is compelled to make pictrures of. You make your own meanings. Your life experiences make you what you are and dictate how you perceive a peice of art. An art concept Bernini was aware of way back when.

  • Fascinating photography! Very compelling concept ....

  • a.q hepsinin

  • awsome movie

  • Facts should speak for themselves. This work is important. Everyone should be aware of our impact on this little island in space.

  • Nem csak Kína a hunyó ám!

  • People are an ecological nightmare. This is too static a medium. I find it makes you stare gawmlessly at things which shouldnt be happening. When people say 'makes you think' it generally means that they glaze over and accept what they see. Personally i think this is disempowering and pushes people to feel fatalistic. The static visual image mimics the traumatised or awestruck mind. How many people are inspired to do something positive after seeing this art?

  • who said that people need to be inspired from his art? it's art, and i've seen his work in person. the atmosphere of the gallery, the lighting his pieces are set under, and the sheer size of the prints are done to allow the viewer to interpret it as art, not as some call to action.

  • I agree with Fraterculae. There's no denying that a lot of these images are ecological nightmares. I guess you could see that as a beautiful thing, if you really want to, but regardless of that, his work shows the results of our consumerist economy. I think it would make any sensible person think twice about buying an iPod or a t.v. they don't need.

  • yes, people are an ecological nightmare, and some may come out fatalistic, some may be inspired, and some may just walk out feeling awed by the strange beauty that he captured and an interesting new understanding on just how powerful humans can be.

  • that was cool.

  • Original, beautiful, complex & thought provoking... I'm definitely going to go look for his film. Thanks for sharing this clip. I subscribed.

  • As the photographer said, the images can be looked at from different viewpoints and he lets the viewer decide how to interpret it. But if you take away all of of the political, or "social" connotations and look at it at face value , the pure artistic value and visual impact of his work cannot be denied.

I read about the film somewhere, there is a woman cinematographer who worked with him to create what sounded like a cool 'Baraka' style feel. For those of you who've seen Baraka.

  • Thank you for perservering and sharing this body of work.

  • Just finished watching his 2 hour video in school. I would recommend that no one make any kind of assumption towards China or the pollution of the world purely based on this simple video. Burtynsky said himself he is neither bashing nor promoting China's development but rather just showing it for what it is.

  • I don't know if I can agree with you totally.

Burtynsky doesn't have to tell us what to think/assume, but his work is almost wasted if it doesn't drive us to learn a little more.

It's perfectly fair to worry about China's development and to ask what will happen, why it will happen and how it could be managed better.

Fast growth, big country: massive and rapid damage to the earth.

  • I guess my comments were directed more towards those blaming China for the world's pollution problems based on this four minute video. And like you said it should drive us to want to learn more, my thoughts exactly. Thank you for strengthening my point.

  • Ed, you shoulda listened to your Mother.

  • I like the boats in the mud. i think they are very powerful. almost post apocalyptic. which is kinda scary.

  • let's not consume

  • The art of what is killing us.

  • the pics are very interesting, and while a bit repulsive in terms of what the humans are doing to the earth, beautiful to look at at the same time

  • must be a depressing job. smelly too im sure.

  • I just visited the granite quarry shown and even standing above it it was difficult to realize the size until one recognized the size of the ladders and people down below. Truly amazing- and as far as I know this quarry is not doing any extensive damage to the landscape, while it is providing employment in a state which lacks many resources and employment opportunities.

  • the river of tires was beautiful.

  • EDDIE!

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE THREE GORGES DAM? ANSWER THAT FUCKNUTS, lT WILL PROVIDE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WITH CLEAN HYDROELECTRIC POWER INSTEAD OF COAL POWER OR SOME SHIT, AND IT WILL HELP FARMERS.

  • Great great pictures. Now this guy is an ARTIST. Unlike that dick Spencer Tunick (check out that other featured vid of the greenpeace thing with 600 naked folk in Switzerland). That guys sucks - photoraphing naked people in weird locations is not art - anyone could take those. These photos here show a great talent - lighting, location, and the moment.

  • Awesome

  • He has made a movie, too. I have seen it and recommend it. Although I knew about all these things, my knowlege was abstract. The movie made it more concrete. It was a shock.

  • well done

  • Great stuff. It makes me sad and scared that China goes so unchecked.

  • It is surely great stuff. However you should rephrase that second statement to something like this. "It makes me scared that America is allowed to abuse the Chinese, and use their land and cheap labor so I can benefit." Most of the pollution and problems in China today are our fault.

  • The Chinese people are very grateful for it. Their lives are much better for the jobs and money they get from all this industry. They are starting to acknowledge the environmental damage and are making first steps to deal with, but they are not going to dismantle what they worked so hard to create, like we did.

  • I agree with you robert3302!

  • such is life....same ground, new perspective thanks

  • sdg

  • don't explain your photos, and how they should give a feel.. Let your photos express themselves.. interesting behaviour.

  • Great pictures. Does he use digital or film? If digital how many megapixels?

  • you look at china in a wrong way!

  • Since he didn't say anything specifically bad about china, I feel you protest too much.

Leads me to believe that you are following the predictable pattern of trying to save face, and when presented with a picture of a naked emperor, tell everyone he's wearing clothes.

Dogmatic self-deception does china no credit at all.

  • airihi.... it would appear to me that you are overreacting.

  • Ditto. Very well put.

  • how else do we look at a country that has the highest capital punishment rate in the world and bills the families of the dead prisoners for the bullets used.

  • first,i am a chinese,i knew my country.and you did not come china before,so i think his sight is part.

if you wang learn china, please come to china.

i will meet you and take you to see the true china.

    thanks.

  • What do you mean the true china? If those photographs were taken in china, then it is the true that though all you see of your country is the beautiful countryside that those ugly industrial areas still do exist.

  • I've lived with Chinese for the last few years. I know Chinese who know China has problems with the environment and fast growth. You can see this in some of the pictures.

I also know other Chinese who think that China can do nothing wrong, even when it is true something is wrong.

Thinking like that doesn't help anyone.

  • AS a pilot of sorts I have flown threw air space in China and it is very dirty. In many places in Chinese air space its like a thin layer of goo floating. It just hangs there. And now theres many places there your no longer allowed to fly threw due to the extremely poor air quality. Its actually dangerous to the Jets. I have flown in many places in the world and thats something I have never ran into before.

  • ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • like them ! they tell a story !

  • very interesting....

we should be much more efficient..

  • These pictures are very moving! The sheer magnitude of what he is photographing is impressive. It's beautiful! The man-made landscapes.

  • materialism is taking us nowhere fast

  • if it werent for these 'hideous monstrosities' you wouldnt be able to sit on your ass and watch this video on your computer at home, none of it would exists so stfu thanks.

  • absolutely amazing

  • HES A LEGEND

  • Pepole just don't know what goes into making the products that we use everyday and what happens when we throw them away. Most don't care:{

  • yah, this is sad. Because companies like Apple and Vodafone only promotes how the products make you 'modern people', no one really cares how much is sacrificed for their consumption.

  • Super interesting! I'm going to check out Mr. Burtnyskys'videos. Thanks!

  • i see trees.

  • good work.... keep it up.

  • beautiful. the past never looked so good.

  • hes great

  • It's terribly amazing what we can do. I don't find the pictures ugly, they're like "woah! they dug up a whole mountain" These are the kinds of things we see in sci-fi.

PS:The guy is right, China has some persistant Heavy Metal!

  • Control your 'roid rage! I never said that digging up a mountain was good, I said it was amazing. Read the message before making death-threats.

  • good work

  • we are constantly bowing our heads to industry and it is never enough work like this can bring accountablity to the producers and the consumers, nobody is innocent including ourselves. yet we can all agree that fat people make the most mess and the average retar that spends his/her day at wal-mart to "shop"

  • Wow thats pretty cool

  • Very nice post, worth the featured status.

  • Nice pictures!

  • amazing photographer..good thought to make a documentary about his very interesting work

  • good stuff

  • Ew.
