What i find sad about this movie is the woman's lack of common sense. Let's go to a radical, fundamental, Islamic nation in a war with air raids with my Muslim husband. How could this go wrong? Notice the keywords RADICAL and FUNDAMENTAL Islam. To be married to a Muslim u must be Muslim yourself. so Muslim woman in a RADICAL and FUNDAMENTAL Islamic state, whats wrong with this picture? btw I'm Iranian.
@GODFATHER4768 as a fellow Iranian, I will have to sympathize with Betty on some grounds.At the time when she met her husband, there were much fewer Iranians in the US and fewer Muslims as well.She had no way of knowing how this relationship would go in the long run or that he would ever change.Many Iranian men have misled their women and taken their children and everything from them.The revolution only made things worse for women in Iran, especially in the early years.

I am a Muslim and I have to say I felt disgusted with the way Mahmoody has treated his wife and his daughter. They did right by escaping away from a demon like Mahmoody. I don't feel any sorry for this bastard man. Rather feel happy he died as a loner without seeing his daughter. He did a false promise on Quran and I guess God has made him pay for the lie he made in the name of Quran. May God NEVER even rest his soul in peace. Amen.
I've seen this movie 3 times now and the part that always confuses me is how the dad goes from being a good husband and father to a crazy person... I guess my mom was right when she talked about how easy it is for a person to lose their wits...

I can conceive that the Betty husband was possibly a very terrible man from a crazy family, but the whole description of Iran is totally unfair and false. These unrealistic features reported from the book, make me doubted seriously about the integrity of the whole story. Married with an Iranian women and being in Iran, I am personally concern about misinformation again Iranian people.
I really admire Sally Field and Alfred Molina. They brought the whole movie into life. You can feel the emotions they emoted in the whole movie. I feel sad for Dr. Mahmoody. He was just a victim of being a depressive person

Anyone remember the name of a movie that had a similar theme to it? I think the little girl in that one was blonde and the father had kidnapped her and taken to another country. Don't blame the movies for showcasing what in a handful of cases are genuine human experiences, actions and reactions. It's human flaw to generalize an entire group for the misguided actions of the few, but that's a flaw we need to fix within ourselves.
