My mum bred and showed Irish Wolfhounds when I was growing up. I don't think there is any other breed that I have the same feeling about :) As a child, ours were so patient and loving despite their size, and excellent guard dogs. Unfortunately they don't live very long, and it just became too difficult to keep saying goodbye.
Lol. Beautiful lap dogs there. Do you know if anyone has tried using IWHs as therapy dogs? They really are so very sweet and gentle. I approached a extended care facility about it. (I don't want a purebred dog without having something for them to do.) They said they'd never heard of it and where concerned the dogs would harm the patients because they are so big.
@SaleekJay I think it's more to do with their size. Most PAT (pet assisted therapy) dogs I've met have been spaniels or labs. I totally agree though, we have quite a history with Wolfhounds, and each and every one has been a loyal and gentle giant. If someone isn't used to dogs they may be intimidated by the size of them.
this was so heart-warming. your grandmother's expressions of joy and her laughter touched my soul. thanks for sharing.Your dogs are beautiful creatures and they know how to give love and touch the spirits of those that need it. I loved the paw on her shoulder as though he was giving her a hug. God Bless.
I have nine of these , four adults and 5 16 week old puppies. They are absouloutly the most amazing dogs anyone could have, my family got our first as a rescue when I was 4 and have been hooked to the breed ever since.
awww such a shame they don't live very long - i know that's a work in progress as far as the breeders are concerned though. lovely dogs - so beautiful.
So sweet. My sister and I hope to own a Wolfie someday. For now, we settle for a Great Dane. Your dogs are absolutely georgous! Everybody loves Grandma! Check out Indie (our Great Dane) on my channel!
@juniorbrown35 Who wouldn't want to go home with Grandma. Actually, they are very loyal but they are also loving to people they feel comfortable with.
@Mr291229 Yes, or elk, or boar. They usually hunt in pairs, but when you weigh anywhere from 110lbs to 200lbs, you probably don't need a lot of help with a poor little wolf.
Dogs are the most amazing creatures! It is almost like they have some kind of magical power. lol I am training two therapy dogs right now, a Chocolate Lab and a Great Pyrenees and we are about to have our first outing at an Alzheimer's unit. I am so excited to see the reaction of the residents.
They definitely sense who is good and bad. I had a landscaper come over for an estimate, and the female didn't like him at all. Curious, I looked him up on the Washington courts database and found he had an extensive criminal background.
@AfroVet - I picked her out of the litter when she came up to my wife who was sitting on the ground, jumped into her lap and immediately fell asleep there. She still likes to lay on top of me and doze off, but now weighs 145lbs. ;-)
Isn't it hot in Utah? I really wouldn't recommend having Irish Wolfhounds in hot climates seeing as they aren't very tolerant to warmth. Keeping them cool in an airconditioned room would also mean that they wouldn't get to be outside much, which is just as cruel.
I know it's annoying to hear, but I don't think wolfies belong in Utah. You wouldn't keep a huskey in those conditions either, right?
@socdk Actually, if you lived in Utah you would know that it is either mild or cold for 9 months or more out of the year. It is true that the summers can get hot, but that won't be a problem for my dog seeing as they weren't bred to withstand extreme cold the way Huskies are. They have average needs as far as temperature goes. But thanks for your concern.
@oOoadventpheonixoOo Oh. It's just when you google for Utah pictures you get another impression. :)
I've looked up some average temperatures, and I would still say that june, july and august will be a bit much for a wolfie.
I know you want one/have recently gotten one, but I still don't think it's right. I own an Irish Wolfhound and I guarantee you that they don't have average temperature needs. Any wolfie carer would agree.
I love IW's! And I adore how dogs seem to understand to be nice and gentle with older and younger people. My dog is vary of strangers, but the moment he met my grandma he was crazy for her.
You're right about how dogs understanding people. There are times when our dogs will go right up to a person and love on them and others the won't go near. We've learned to trust them over the years. They have a way of identifing thing within a peson that we can't.
our wolfhound lived to the ripe old age of 12, and up until the last 2 - 3 months of her life enjoyed the same lifestyle from when she was a pup. she was a lovely girl with a warm friendly, and by God PATIENT temperament. I would recommend this breed to anyone who could afford to keep them. I've never met a better breed in my life <3
As puppies they require a big yard but limited excerise. As they get older you want to keep them active with atleast a walk every day.
They have a history of health problems so they don't live long (average 6-7 years). Caring for them can be expensive and hard at times.
This is a pet that you should really research before getting one. You must have big yard, big car, and be able to cover medical expenses. However, what you get in return is a big heart and lots of love.
Thank you for the info. I fell in love with a beautiful Irish Wolfhound that I met a few years ago and have been considering getting one, but wanted to ask around and do some research beforehand. Thanks again.
I had no idea they could be this affectionate. I've seen them working in herds before and they're very serious in the field, but this is great. Long live the hounds.
This is absolutely beautiful! What could be better than a laughing, sweet-faced grandmother getting kisses from loving Wolfie puppies? Thanks for sharing something so happy.
Mulligan, the male is about 160lbs and at 14 mos is still growing. Liadan, the female is about 140lbs. If your IWH is a male and 85lbs at 7 mos, you can expect him to get at least as big, maybe bigger.
awwwww they love her ..
