Check out his version on Jamaaladeen Tacuma's "Music World", it's great. Kazumi Wantanabe does some shredding on a couple of tracks as well. Great cd.
yes the Creator has a master plan and believe it or not it is written in His Holy Word the Bible. Despite the protests and doubt about its validity it is His Word to all who have "ears to hear thus sayeth the Lord". The doubt and uncertainty about His master plan comes from the demonic one, the concelaer the father of lies-Satan, the devil, lucifer, beelzebub, the deceiver and believe it or not MANY today follow unknowingly his nefarious ways. He has an highly intelligent, tightly knit army
God running through you, me everything ... sometimes we see outside this, sometimes we miss this ... sometimes we, in building our vision, think to destroy His plan ... but this is all foolishness ... Happiness throughout all the land ...
I saw Leon Thomas perform this live with Pharoah Sanders in Harlem in the 70s. Leon had a real soulful "yoddle". He performed TCHAMP on Santana's tribute to Coltrane, "Welcome" album too.
You Honor Pharoah & Leon with this post-Thanks MoonSymphonie
For those that can listen to life, not just speed along with its simulated consumerist cousin. We need to get back to the centre mankind, before its too late... and this is not a threat it is a reality.
Any Leon Tomas fan needs to visit the Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Television and Radio.) That's the only place I know to see video of Leon live - and what a video it is! A one hour special of Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Eddie Jefferson & Leon Thomas singing together! And Leon more than holds his own.
yes, i dig ya! Horace TApscott actually visited in our home in the late 70's, and played my late wife's upright Steinway grand, rehearsing for a gig in our town, Dallas. He was such a delightful spirit, and at the bleeding edge of creativity. a lot of us like you and i miss him. Peace be with you.
I haven't heard this in decades....brings back memories of jazz clubs in L.A. in the 60s and 70s, and of the avante-garde musical group, Horace Trapscott's "Arkestra"... anyone else out there in this groove??
Perhaps I'm a bit younger (in my early 40s), but I listen to this type of music all the time. To me, it sounds as real and vital as I'm sure it did when new. So yes, I'm definitely in this groove!
I'm 18, and I have to agree with what everyone has said....The 60s-70s were amazing times. Culturally and Musically. Some of the greatest artistic moments in history!~
I can't believe I wasn't born then. My generations music is....sort of lacking in a lot of aspects...Hopefully it'll get better with time. Like those fine wines? XD
@GodKing5 No! Don't say that... I have said that myself... But look at what you are listening to! You are changing and have good intentions! You are searching for happiness, compassion, love, and more than words can describe! Keep up the effort. What you seek you shall find...This is music with feeling and sensitivity.... Music for the pure at heart... Keep it up Shadowwarriorkk... This planet can have harmony and balance : )
@ShadowWarriorkk -you just haven't found the right music yet ;) and i think you will soon find out you are born in one of the most important generations to have ever lived on earth!
It's 1968 I am sitting on pillows in my first apartment with my husband who had just come home for Viet Nam. We have a pulsating red light and a Magnavox stereo, playing this, "Kulu Se Mama "John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, and Imamu Baraka. How could I forget Carlos Santana. We studied class struggle and were ready for the REVOLUTION! 40 YEARS, I can't believe that it's been 40 years!
The marriage desolved shortly after the birth of our son one year later. You see he came home addicted and "main lining" drugs. He went to south American to "find" himself. That's where I divorced him 33 years ago. Today our son is 39 and my ex husband is a sucessful businessman drug free for many years. His new family probably have no clue of his past addiction. Thanks for asking. I still love the years 1967 and 1968 so far my favorites.
WOW...that is a remarkable story. It's good to see that alls well with everyone. I agree the late 60s were some good times from what I remember. I think it was the last time I truly felt safe in my neighborhood.
That is an incredible story! Once in a while you read a posting like yours and you realize that through this medium we can still communicate our human stories... and well, this Leon Thomas ain't too shabby either (joking).
Thanks for your story, and thanks for the person who posted this beautiful song (I only know Pharaoh Sanders version).
I appreciate your comments. This is indeed an incredible medium for communication. Even though I truly loved the 60's I have to believe that the best is yet to come. I had my 60th birthday 3 weeks ago and can't believe that that Nina Simone, Odetta, and Miriam Makeba the tunesmiths and revolutionary vocalists of that time are no more. Thank God the music will live on. By the way, do yourself a favor and run to see CADILLAC RECORDS. Incredible sound track!
They used to play this joint on the radio a lot back in the early 70s. In fact WDAS in philly used to play a bunch of Leon THomas's joints. Anyone remember a song he did called "China Doll"?
Yes, I remember China Doll from the 70's. After hearing it on the radio for the first time I actually felt like I was walking down a small street in China town. I still have the album. What a gift to music.
My Dad got to know Leon as a campus photographer at Tennessee State long ago, when he used to visit there. I must have heard this song a million times as a kid and still love it today.
i have lost my pharaoh album somewhere along the way. never heard this version. beautiful, of course. been trying to turn my band mates on to playin' this one.
Leon Thomas sang and recorded with Carlos Santana in the mid '70's. In '73 I saw a great double bill. Santana and Tower of Power at the old Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. anyone out there remember that venue?
I love this song. Do you notice that this plea shifts from "the creator makes but one demand, peace and happiness for every man to the creator makes another demand peace and happiness through all the land". Subtle but telling no?
Check out his version on Jamaaladeen Tacuma's "Music World", it's great. Kazumi Wantanabe does some shredding on a couple of tracks as well. Great cd.
