I think music on bicycle started here in my country Trinidad that was about 6 years ago. There was like a bike revolution going on bike with music, flare kits and lights galore. There was bike shows and storms that cause roadblocks and crazy loud bikes with just mids only. So loud u have to cover your ears. We used RCF and 18Sound speakers for mids and about 800watts rms for em. Damn louder than cars.. Then license came and we moved to cars.
or just midrange frequencies... no woofers or tweeters probably. (bass/lows = woofers, mids = midrange, & treble/highs = tweeters)
you can get great, way better than a boombox, full range sound with just a 10wpc (very efficient!) "class D" amplifier and a typical pair of bookshelf speakers.
with about 10 D cell sized 3v rechargeable lithium ion batteries, you could push 100wpc & get crazy loud!
if that's still not enough, then you need a trailer, subwoofers, & car batteries/amps
it's true that bike systems are HUGE in trinidad, but bike stereos have been around MUCH longer on lowrider bikes in california, and i'm sure a few people strapped boomboxes on bikes even before that.
i skateboarded with my boombox once around 1985. it was too big and heavy though, so i only did it once.
The output of one solox 18 should beat that of the 2 dds by a little bit if the solox gets 5000watts. For low bass cone area wins. If those 2 dds got 2500 watts each and the solox got 5000 the dds would shake more.
Well, First of all, I'm living in Vientiane, Laos, so my choice is rather limited but they got everything i needed to make it. Well i took the subs from a stereo in my room, chopped up some wood and connected everything to a 500 watt motorcycle amp. I'm not sure if you'll find one of those in the states. It's powered by a 12 volt motorcycle battery wich lasts for 1 month without charging.
I use a 7 Ah 12 Volt Battery. Its about 7*12*8cm. it lasts damn long too. I charge about once every month and i play the music like everyday on my way to school.

That's great work, I really like how the subs don't take up any extra room as you mounted them.
