This was definitely one of the better episodes but the thing I hated about the series was they never really gave a reason as to why Charmeleon and Charizard stopped obeying Ash when it was such a loyal pokemon to him as a charmander. To me it just needed to be explained because charmander was always so loyal to Ash and then all that changed when it evolved.

As a result, Ash, was not mature enough at that time to handle a Charmeleon let alone a Charizard. Ash needed to prove himself to a high level pokemon like Charmeleon and Charizard and show that he is a trainer that deserves it's respect.

Well I think the reason why Charizard disobeys Ash is this. When he was a Charmander, he was abandoned by his first trainer. When ash obtained him, he got over it. But when he evolved into Charmeleon & then Charizard, the hurt, anger & hatred of his cruel abandonment that was deep within came to & effected his mind making him disrespectful, disobedient & violent towards Ash thinking he would abandon him too. Only when Ash helped him, he discovered he was wrong.
